Black Novels on the 20th Century African American Northward Migration/Díla z hlediska afroamerické Northward Migration ve 20. století

HŮLA, Marek January 2016 (has links)
In my diploma thesis called Black Novels on the 20th Century African American Northward Migration I am going to examine the novel in African American literature with a particular focus on the migration from the South to the North inside the United States following the First World War. At first the work will recapitulate the history of this African American migration - its causes and its effects. The motif of the North as the "promised land" and how, in most cases, migrant characters in these works experienced this form of the "American Dream" myth will be analyzed. Finally, the racism by whites of the South will be compared to the racism by whites in the North.

Rasistické zákonodárství nacistického Německa / Racist legislation of Nazi Germany

Vernerová, Denisa January 2017 (has links)
The thesis is divided into nine separate chapters. In the first chapter, I focused on the aftermath of the First World War. Shortly after the cessation of fighting, representatives of the powers involved met in France to establish responsibility for the outbreak of the global conflict. The Treaty of Versailles imposed high financial reparations on Germany and also stipulated a reduction of the German army and, last but not least, the removal of a part of the German territory. The second and third chapters are devoted to postwar developments in Germany. After the war, Germany became a republic, namely a democratic republic. The Weimar Republic even had one of the most democratic constitutions in Europe. From its establishment, the republic was facing hardly surmountable difficulties in the field of internal politics, economy and later finance. It is therefore no wonder that the citizens, disappointed in democracy, heeded the positively sounding mottos of the National Socialists on the eradication of unemployment and the improvement of living standards for all. I have divided the era of Hitler's Germany into three periods in terms of taking antisemitic measures for the purposes of better orientation in the text. In the first period, the Nazis focused primarily on the elimination of the Jews (with some...

Rozbor vybraných britských antikoloniálních literárních děl

FUČÍKOVÁ, Adéla January 2018 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with analysing selected British anti-colonial fiction applying the theory of the renowned British literary critic Edward W. Said. It introduces Said´s theory of the motif of colonialism in different types of art work as the basic statement, as well as Said´s concept of ´the empire´, and these concepts will later on be applied onto individual literary works. They include the novella in a journal form Journal of a West India Proprietor by Matthew Gregory Lewis, a fable "How the Camel Got His Humph" from Just So Stories, and a poem "Gunga Din" from the collection Gunga Din and other Favorite Poems by Rudyard Kipling. My analysis will also include the novel A Passage to India by E.M. Forster, two novellas Lord Jim and Heart of Darkness and a short story "An Outpost of Progress" by Joseph Conrad, and a short story called "The Force of Circumstance" by Somerset Maugham. The main phenomena that will be analysed in this thesis are British racism towards the native people, cultural differences and misunderstandings, British superiority (very often also linked to certain naivety) over the native people. Analysing all these factors, I will strive to emphasize the authors´ artistic intentions and efforts to point them out as serious social problems. Applying the theory of Edward Said, I will support and develop my arguments.

The text contains mixed approach, inductive ethnographic, stemming from my extensive research data and deductive or theory-driven. Methodologically the research belongs to the broad area of qualitative approach to social research, especially cognitive anthropological, psychoanalytical and that of individual psychology. First theoretical part, using mainly concepts of cognitive anthropology and distibutive theory of culture is focused on the theoretical question of the concept of culture and how it can be used for the "Roma culture" concept in relationship with the question of "majority". The second part consists mainly of a reinterpretation of the question of exclusion and Roma culture from the point of view of the concept of distantiation and expands it into Frantz Fanon inspired theory of confrontation.
