Between Two Worlds: the Phenomenon of Re-emigration by Hellenes to Australia

Papadopoulos, Anthony January 2005 (has links)
The centrality of the thesis is the impact upon the individual Greek migrant who chose to leave his place of birth by emigrating, repatriating, and subsequently re-emigrating, and how the surreptitious nature of acculturation alters perceptions and thoughts. The causes of such migratory translocations will be analyzed within the sociocultural and historicoeconomic conditions that appertained at the time the decisions were taken to deracinate oneself. The study will provide an analysis of diachronic Hellenic migration and Australian immigration policies (since its inception as a federated state). There will also be an analysis of Australias diachronic and dedicated immigration control mechanisms since federation, its various post-immigration integration policies of immigrants, the mass immigration program activated in the post-WWII period, and the adoption and incorporation of multiculturalism as the guiding force in migrant selection and integration. Australias history, its cultural inheritance, its socioeconomic development, and its attraction as a receiving country of immigrants are analyzed, as are Australias xenophobia and racism at its inception, and how these twin social factors influenced its immigration program. The study examines limitations placed upon social intercourse, employment opportunities, and other hindrances to Greek (and other non-British migrants) immigrants because of Australias adoption of restrictive, racially-based immigration policies. The study focuses upon the under-development of Hellas in the first half of the twentieth century, its high unemployment and under-employment rates, and the multiple other reasons, aside form unemployment, which forced thousands of Hellenes to seek an alternative (for a better life) through internal or external migration. Particular emphasis will be placed upon historic occasions in Greeces history and the influence of foreign powers upon internal Greek politics. The motivations for each distinct stage of translocation, in the lives of the respondents, will be examined within the ambit of social, cultural, economic, and historical context, which will place emphasis on the socioeconomic development of Hellas, the development of Hellenic Diaspora, Australias development as a receiving immigrant country, and the effects of acculturation and nostalgia upon first-generation Greek-Australians. Given that the thesis is based upon personal recollections and detailed information that span decades of the respondents lives, the thesis is divided into four parts for greater clarity and comprehension: the first examines respondents lives in region of birth, their families economic, educational, and social environment, scholastic achievements by respondents, employment status, future prospects, religiosity, hopes and aspirations, and reasons for seeking to migrate. The second part examines respondents lives in Australia, within the contextuality of accommodation, employment, family creation, social adaptation, language acquisition, attitude towards unionism and religion, expectations about Australia, and reasons for repatriating. The third part analyzes repatriation and life in Greece through resettlement, accommodation, childrens schooling and adaptation, relatives and friends attitude, disappointments, and longing for things Australian, while it also examines re-emigratory causes and the disillusionment suffered through repatriation. The final part assesses resettlement in Australia, and all associated social, economic, and environmental aspects, as well as respondents childrens readaptation to different lifestyle and educational system. The thesis concludes with recommendations for possible further studies associated with the thesis nature.

Ophthalmic complications of spina bifida and hydrocephalus

Gaston, Hannah January 1986 (has links)
This thesis represents an attempt to further our knowledge of the ophthalmic complications of spina bifida and hydrocephalus by means of literature review and a long term clinical study, and to determine whether regular ophthalmic supervision can assist in the general management of affected children. The ophthalmic complications of spina bifida have often been reported in the literature and thought to merit regular supervision of affected children, yet few centres currently offer this service. In this study 322 children attending one regional centre were examined repeatedly over a six year period by one ophthalmologist. Ophthalmic complications were found to be very common. They frequently provided evidence of raised intracranial pressure due to shunt dysfunction even when other objective evidence was lacking. Every spina bifida and hydrocephalus clinic should have an ophthalmalogist in its medical team. Preservation of visual function and early diagnosis of raised intracranial pressure in these children should result from this arrangement.

Therefore, the research developed guided by the following specific objectives: to identify if there is manifestation of subjective and objective causes generating indisposition , that leads to the psychic suffering in the educational work; to establish in the reports, the destiny of the anguish that induce to the suffering and the possible reverse-significance; the possibility contribution for a reflection, construction of ideas and attitudes that make accessible the reversesignificance of indisposition in the educational performance. And so, we looked for grounding, besides Education in the psychoanalytic theoretical contribution, as well as in some philosophical collaboration on the educational indisposition of modernity and subjectivity on the job; teacher's suffering issues and the symptoms that point out the psychic suffering and after all the understanding of indisposition, when indicate possible way outs in perspective of recollection, by means of "rescues of desire" formerly manifested in professional choice. With this purpose, four teachers with reports of removal by medical licenses from an Escola Classe of Asa Sul were investigated. As methodological procedure to analysis of contents, according to Bardin (1979), we used the semi-structured interview and the device of educational memory, that supplied us information and results. This way, they were found seven thematic categories, viz: work, falling sick, family, distress, sensation of incapacity, teacher’s memory, teacher. Of the achieved results, answering to the first objective we noticed that the causes of suffering are linked to the own subjects of work, as: organization and planning of tasks, but also, linked to personal subjects, so that they don't get to dissociate their individualities from the social coexistence issues. For the second objective, we verified a great incidence of feelings such as, fear, insecurity, blame, sadness, death sensation, palpitation, lack of air, wastage and weep, as well as, cry appeal, depression and associated panic. In response of the third objective, we noticed that the teachers, recognize that they like their career. There is, identification with the teaching. Being like this, although, be inevitable the anguish and the suffering in the educational profession, it is in the work that these teachers find satisfaction. _________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT

Assessment of the Effects of Global Postural Re-Education on Musicians with Nonspecific Musculoskeletal Pain as Assessed by Questionnaires and Infrared Thermography

Mercado, Dapne 13 November 2018 (has links)
Background: The Global Postural Re-education (GPR) method seems to be an effective method for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. However, no study has examined its effects on a group of musicians with musculoskeletal pain. Additionally, infrared thermography (IRT) has been widely used in the field of medicine as a monitoring a diagnostic tool, which can provide empirical data about the effectiveness of the GPR method. Objective: To examine the effects of GPR using scales and questionnaires and IRT. Methods: This thesis enclosed two articles. In the first, musicians with (N=6) and without (N=6) musculoskeletal pain underwent a thermographic evaluation to examine the skin temperature asymmetry (STA) between both groups as a representation of musculoskeletal pain. The second article was a randomized control trial and examined the effects of the GPR on a group of 13 participants with musculoskeletal pain (7 experimental, 6 controls) after receiving 8 sessions of GPR. Pain, disability and quality of life data was collected using the VAS, MPIIQM, SF-36. A thermographic assessment was also conducted to examine the correlation between pain severity and degree of STA, and changes in contralateral skin asymmetries before and after the intervention. Results: The first article revealed no significant differences in STA between groups. Results from the second article showed statistical significant improvements in pain, disability and quality of life on the group who received the GPR intervention. Results from the IRT analysis were not significant. Conclusion: Results from the self-report questionnaires suggest that GPR is effective in treating musculoskeletal pain in the targeted group of musicians. Pain changes did not correlate with thermal outcomes. Further studies are needed to confirm the results obtained with IRT.

Recreating 3D limbal architectures by two-photon polymerization for cornea regeneration

Prina, Elisabetta January 2018 (has links)
Limbal Epithelial Crypts (LECs) are stem cell niches located in the limbus, the area between the cornea and the conjunctiva, and are responsible for cornea epithelium regeneration. Their anatomical structures were identified and described by Dua et al (2005). Stem cells migrate from this area toward the cornea where they differentiate into corneal epithelial cells. The lack of the LECs determines a pathology called Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency (LSCD) that can cause conjunctivalization, neovascularisation, corneal opacification, eventually resulting in vision loss. Currently, the main carriers to support limbal stem cell proliferation and differentiation used in clinics do not include enclosed structures able to act as cell reservoirs. In addition, the driving forces that determine the migration and the differentiation of limbal stem cells are not clarified yet. The hypotheses of this thesis were that the stiffness and the geometry of the scaffold influence the limbal stem cell differentiation process. Understanding these key factors could help to inform the design of scaffolds for future cornea regeneration strategies. The effect of the stiffness on cell differentiation is a well-known mechanism, but is less investigated in the limbus-corneal tissue. In this work, it was studied by producing macro-scaffolds (d=8 mm) obtained by UV-crosslinking. The stiffness was varied by increasing the concentration of Gelatin Methacrylate (GelMA), a biocompatible, photocrosslinkable material. Compression tests, rheology, AFM, and swelling analysis were performed on the developed hydrogels and compared to the ex vivo human cornea values. The gels with a concentration between 5% and 15% (w/v) exhibited mechanical properties in the same order of magnitude obtained for the cornea. The results indicated that the increased stiffness did not have a significant impact either in the expression of cytokeratin (CK3/CK14, stem cell marker, and CK14, differentiation marker), or in the gene expression (KRT3 and KRT19). However, the secondary key factors explored, differentiation media and oxygen concentration, supported cell differentiation. Inkjet printing was investigated as an additive manufacturing technique to produce 3D architectures. Although with this technique it was possible to develop a 3D structure with a stiffness gradient, its resolution was not sufficiently high to obtain a structure with dimensions comparable to the in vivo limbal stem cell niche. The second hypothesis was verified by developing a biocompatible scaffold mimicking the structure of the limbal stem cell niche and by evaluating the impact of its architecture on stem cell differentiation. The crypt geometry was modelled as U-shaped scaffolds with a diameter narrowing from 200 μm to 20 μm and was micro-fabricated from GelMA/PEGDA-based hydrogels using a Two-Photon Polymerization system (2PP). However, it was proven that the use of riboflavin as photoinitiator was inefficient at 780 nm, the wavelength used in the 2PP system. For this reason, P2CK was used as photoinitator to obtain stable hydrogels. The 2PP system allowed the precise recreation of the exact dimensions of the native crypts. Swelling, susceptibility to enzymatic degradation and stiffness were all evaluated. The biocompatibility of the printed scaffolds was assessed using immortalized human corneal epithelial cell proliferation up to 14 days. The ability of limbal stem cells to repopulate the crypts was demonstrated via two strategies. In the first strategy, human limbal stem cells were seeded directly inside the niche whilst in the second strategy, primary human limbal explants were placed adjacent to the printed structures and cells migrated towards the scaffold. Cell distribution and differentiation along the z-axis were evaluated using confocal microscopy. Cytokeratin 14 (CK14) with p63 and Cytokeratin CK3/12 (CK3/12) were used as limbal stem cell and differentiated corneal epithelial cell markers, respectively. Limbal epithelial stem cells were cultured in two conditions: xeno-free media, and with primary cells in serum containing media on a feeder layer. Both conditions showed the zonation of markers along the z-axis, which was not observed on flat scaffolds, demonstrating that the geometry alone influences cell phenotype. This suggests that the enclosed geometry results in the generation of a microenvironment inside the niche that influences cell phenotype. The presence of soluble factors, generated by cellular secretions, a specific oxygen concentration, and a more ‘stressful’ biomechanical milieu for the cells are some hypotheses that need further investigation and will be the basis of future work. In conclusion, the hypotheses of this thesis were partially confirmed. The variation in gel stiffness did not allow for the control of the hLESC differentiation process. However, the results demonstrated the influence of the geometry on stem cell differentiation without the use of signaling molecules. Further studies are necessary to have a description of the detailed spatial variability of the scaffold’s characteristics. Overall, the 2PP approach is flexible and could be applied to the generation of stem cell niches of other tissues, and could represent a significant advance in regenerative medicine.

Integrated full vectorial FEM, FDTD and diffraction integrals in characterising visible light propagation through lossy biological media

Rahman, M. E. January 2015 (has links)
In this thesis, the propagation characteristics of the biological optical waveguides, considering the materials as lossy in the optical frequencies, have been analysed. It has been found that the losses present in the biological materials in optical frequencies are not negligible, and the loss values have significant effects on the propagation characteristics of these waveguides. In biological optical waveguides, each waveguide is surrounded by parallel waveguides so that the propagation characteristics would be different from that of single waveguide present in a homogeneous material. In this thesis, the impacts of the presence of the neighbouring waveguides on the propagation characteristics of a waveguide are studied in details. Dispersion characteristics of the waveguides have been investigated, and the effects of the material loss, presence of the neighbouring waveguides and the presence of multi-layer W-fibre like structure on the dispersion characteristics have also been studied. The modal characteristics, the time-domain evolution of the signal and the diffraction characteristics have been integrated to explain some of the still unanswered questions in the visual systems. An attempt has been made to explain the Stiles-Crawford effect of human retina in light of the findings of this thesis. A full-vectorial H-field based finite element method (FEM) is used for the modal solutions, Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) is used to study the time evolution of the signals through the waveguides, and the Diffraction profiles have been obtained by Rayleigh-Sommerfeld(RS) diffraction integral.

________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The Piled Raft Foundations systems (PRF), are commonly used for medium height buildings (up to seven levels), built on soft soils subjected to subsidence processes by changing the internal conditions of stress. These variations are especially related to the change in pore water pressure as a result of water extraction and loss of groundwater recharge. This research aims to evaluate the behavior of PRF systems, built on soft clay in consolidation process due to the structural loads and the reduction of the pore water pressure generated by pumping water from deep permeable layers. It is intended that the research is the starting point for a better understanding of the system PRF behavior and that in the future, allow the proposal of a simplified method of analysis that takes into account the negative friction phenomena. The experimental work was performed using reduced scale models in geotechnical centrifuge. Two devices operating at different scales for the evaluation of settlement, pore water pressure within the soil and the load distribution in the system, under water controlled conditions. As a result of this research, was determined the influence of the number and spacing of the piles in PRF response, demonstrating that typically, piles groups with greater spacing have a more effective settlement control. Moreover, settlements are larger when the soil is exposed to a reduction process of pore water pressure, if compared with settlement measured under conditions of constant pore water pressure (or only affected by the load). It was observed that there are a number of piles beyond which settlement controls are negligible. Further, due to the reduction process of pore water pressure, the raft partially loses contact with the soil and therefore transfers a higher load to the piles into the PRF system. Thus, if the piles are designed to work very close to the ultimate load, the risk of a total system failure is greater.

Roat, Leonardo Amorim January 2011 (has links)
The present thesis presents some considerations on the dramatic arts in the current days, specifically on the new aesthetic products originated from the incorporation of the hypermedia and the audiovisual language. It is an attempt to understand the perspectives of (re)signification of its constituent elements. The building of such new artistic moves by their creators and public becomes the result from the dilution of the frontiers, of a deterritorialization, of a current and emerging hybridization of a number of aspects of human knowledge. Within such a postmodern scene the digital language connected to the dramatic arts in an unprecedented process of crossing between their respective languages characterizes the unrelenting search for communication to amplify human telos by means of the arts. It is also an attempt to understand the possible paradigmatic ruptures installed through an alert look at the revolution generated by the digital culture in the universe of the arts, anchored in a process of feedback between the postmodern subject and context. Thus, to investigate the emerging new configurations for an art that still has no name, and of the (re)signification of the constituent elements that comprise the dominant view for the dramatic arts in a postmodern intercultural scene, a discussion is made on the theatrical productions by the Brazilian Phila 7 and Teatro para Alguém, the British Station House Opera and Royal Shakespeare Conpany, and by the French-Canadian performer Robert Lepage, and the group from Catalunya, La Fura del Baus / Submitted by Jovina Laurentino Raimundo (jovina.raimundo@unisul.br) on 2018-01-17T16:31:04Z No. of bitstreams: 1 103092_Leonardo.pdf: 571543 bytes, checksum: 6c1188687f523117532fba270d5d9da4 (MD5) / Approved for entry into archive by Gheovana Figueiredo (gheovana.figueiredo@unisul.br) on 2018-01-17T17:10:18Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 1 103092_Leonardo.pdf: 571543 bytes, checksum: 6c1188687f523117532fba270d5d9da4 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2018-01-17T17:10:18Z (GMT).
