The marketing of vehicles during the economic downturn / Magdalena Maliszewska

Maliszewska, Magdalena Beata January 2010 (has links)
South Africa's automotive industry has become an increasingly important contributor to the country's gross domestic product, largely through the strong growth in the motor vehicle and component exporting sector. The South African Motor Industry is ranked 20th in the world in terms of vehicle production. It is responsible for an estimated 80% of Africa's vehicle productivity and makes 0.85% of the world's vehicles. In this study, the automotive industry in South Africa is investigated, how it was influenced during the recession which started at the end of 2008 and went through the 2009 period, what effect it had on the market as well as the influence on sales during that period. In the literature section, the 4P's of the marketing mix are explained and discussed as well as how it influences the automotive industry. The purpose of this study is to see specifically how the Klerksdorp dealerships were influenced by the recession and what decisions they had undertaken to tackle the problems that they encountered. This study also investigates what influences the marketing mix had on the different dealerships in Klerksdorp area. From the empirical study done, the conclusion is that the dealerships in Klerksdorp were struggling through the economic crisis. As far as the product was concerned, the different dealerships concentrated on the best selling lines during the recession period. Very few dealerships adjusted their prices and very few offered extras that were already included in the price. With the promotion, it was actually established that the dealerships did not actually put any extra effort in order to promote their vehicles. Four out of nine dealerships decreased their promotion expenditure, while the other five kept it at the same level. None of the dealerships has increased their promotional spending during the time of recession. Finally, the recommendations to the dealerships, as how to improve the marketing and sales through the correct use of the marketing mix, especially through the use of promotion in the Klerksdorp dealerships were made. / Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2010.

Foraging and food provisioning strategies of northern fulmars and Manx shearwaters

Gray, Catherine Mairi January 2001 (has links)
Northern fulmars and Manx shearwaters are pelagic seabirds of the Order Procellariiformes, a group that is characterised by extreme life-history traits. Many of these traits have been associated with the unpredictability of marine food sources. However, fulmars and Manx shearwaters feed their chicks at relatively frequent intervals compared with other procellariiforms, and the life-history implications of this strategy are poorly understood. In this thesis I examined food provisioning and chick growth strategies in fulmars and Manx shearwaters, and discussed these strategies in the context of life history - environment interactions. 1 tested the efficacy of a periodic weighing method for assessing food provisioning, and found that this gave a very similar estimate of the frequency and size of feeds compared to periodic weighing combined with data on parental attendance, determined by radio tracking. However, periodic weighing was much less effective at distinguishing meals from one or two parents. In Manx shearwaters, chick growth was highly correlated with food provisioning rate, and both variables showed significant annual variation. Both individual and environmental effects contributed to this variation, and in particular, peak mass showed highly significant repeatability coefficients. Fulmars showed significant variation in breeding success, diet and chick growth between two years, but chicks were apparently heavier in a very poor year. This was caused by differential mortality of chicks in poor condition. In Manx shearwaters, male parents visited the nest more frequently and made a greater contribution to food provisioning than females, a strategy that has seldom been reported in sexually monomorphic seabirds. I used a cross-fostering experiment to examine the parent-chick interactions responsible for the mass recession period prior to fledging in Manx shearwaters. Both parents and chicks had an active role in controlling food intake, and the results indicated that mass recession was not caused by parental desertion as previously thought.

The purpose of the present study was to histologically evaluate the healing of acellular dermal matrix (AlloDermâ), associated or not, a enamel matrix proteins (Emdogainâ) in gingival recessions defects created in dogs. Recessions defects were surgically created (5X7 mm) on the buccal aspect of the uppercuspids in contralateral jaw quadrants, in 6 mongrel dogs. The defects were exposed to plaque accumulation for 2 months. After they were divided into 2 groups, according to the treatment applied: Group I- acellular dermal matrix and coronally positioned flap; Group II: acellular dermal matrix, enamel matrix proteins and coronally positioned flap. After 3 months, the animals were sacrificed, and the blocks obtained were processed. Histologic and histometric analysis were performed to examine: ephithelium formation, cementum and bone regeneration, connective tissue adaptation, attachment level and defect measure. Results did not show a statistically significant difference in the cementum and bone regeneration, connective tissue adaptation, attachment level and defect measure parameters. The mean values were: 0,06 mm and 0,32 mm for cementum regeneration; -0,75 mm and -0,86 mm for bone regeneration; -2,15mm and -3,11 mm for attachment level; and 4,90 mm and 5,51 mm for defect measure, in the I and II groups, respectively. The ephithelium formation parameter was 2,88 mm and 2,15 mm, in the I and II groups, respectively, with a statistically significant difference. Within limits of this study, it can be concluded that Emdogainâ not brought additional effects when associated with AlloDermâ.

Responsive strategies adopted by non-profit organisations in recessionary times to ensure their financial sustainability

Hadebe, Patricia January 2013 (has links)
The impact of the global financial crisis, which has its origins in the United States, reverberated through the private sector and brought some country economies to their knees. This highlighted the interconnectedness of world economies. Big companies filed for bankruptcy whiles others were acquired in a bid to avoid total annihilation. Unemployment levels reached terrifying heights. While the world economy was unravelling and the legitimacy of governments was determined by their ability to alleviate the financial pressures their citizens were under; another group was feeling the pressure. However, the impact the financial crisis has had on group has not received nearly as much attention. Although the non-profit sector may not feature highly on the economic scales and matrices; it is part a part of the global economic fabric. It receives funds from governments, corporates, foundations, philanthropists and individual citizens. The size of the donations they receive correlates to the size of the disposable income of their donors. It therefore follows that when the world economy unravelled; non-profit organisations saw a marked decline in the funds received. This paper sets to establish not only how the South African non-profit sector responded to what became a funding crisis for them; but also to test their responsive strategies within the framework of the strategy process. An exploratory research method was used to investigate this problem, and the results showed on the one hand, a spirited sector that has taken the challenge on by adopting more commercial thinking to ensure their financial sustainability. On the other it was found that challenges with a key strategic partner prevailed as well as the challenge of accepting the incongruence of embracing commercial practices vis-à-vis holding deep social mission values. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / zkgibs2014 / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / MBA / Unrestricted

Isomorphic Convergence & the Great Recession of 2008: A Case Study of Eight Investment Banks

Bianco, Steven Blake January 2016 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Eve Spangler / This research aims at contributing to the prevailing literature on the causal origins of the 2008 Recession. Organizations within major investment finance very likely converged towards increased speculation as the result of a process called isomorphism. This approach engaged in a multiple-embedded case study of eight banks including Bank of America, J.P. Morgan Case, Wells Fargo, Bank of New York, Mellon Financial, Bank of New York Mellon, PNC Financial (or PNC Bank), and U.S. Bancorp. The work draws from a qualitative content analysis of quantitative accounting data disclosed under annual financial reports between 2003 and 2008. Trend analyses and accounting ratios were utilized to locate points of convergence in the financial data for these organizations. Conclusively, the research found convergence in the valuation of revenues during certain periods, the valuation of net-income during certain periods, the proportion of noninterest income to revenues, the liquidity ratio, the investment of mortgage-backed securities, outstanding total loans, and net cash used in financial activities. / Thesis (MA) — Boston College, 2016. / Submitted to: Boston College. Giving and Red Cloud Indian School : fiscal years 2007-2011

Ehlman, Matthew P. 11 December 2017 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This dissertation focuses on the philanthropic partnerships at Red Cloud Indian School, a private-public religious partnership that educates approximately 600 Lakota students on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, during the worst recession since the Great Depression – 2007 through 2011. Research finds that during this time contributions fell for Native American organizations, educational and religious organizations. Despite these realities, contributions to Red Cloud Indian School increased. Red Cloud Indian School attempted numerous fundraising approaches dating back to the late 1880s with the support from Sister Katherine Drexel. Throughout the decades Red Cloud Indian School relied on contributions from networks, including friends of the Society of Jesus, the Black and Indian Mission, and a national direct mail program. These fundraising efforts fluctuated significantly since the mid-century and plateau in the early 2000s forcing a board directed change to raise additional financial support. This dissertation examines the research question: “In what ways do high net worth individual supporters understand their relationship to Red Cloud Indian School from Fiscal Years 2007 through 2011 which led to an increase in financial support of fortyfour percent (44%) over the five-year period.” This study provides an example of donor relationships with an organization, in particular engaging donors who support educational organizations for indigenous populations. Understanding the donors’ perceptions, desires, and motivations for directing their philanthropic activity specific to Red Cloud will complement the quantitative research that has been completed regarding high net worth donors. This study uses an emergent qualitative design, which allows the study to evolve and be as malleable as possible in order to follow the interviewees and explore information uncovered.
