System design for lower limb rehabilitation : upstairs and downstairs trainingsLiao, Yin-ling 12 August 2010 (has links)
The study is to propose a novel design for the lower limb rehabilitation system through the motion training of stepping upward or downward. A main goal of this design is to constrain the system dimension to a small value for home use purpose. It is also desired that the functioning of system is automatic that the direction of stepping upward or downward can be changed arbitrarily in the training process.
The TRIZ theory, which offers a systematic thinking process for problem solving, is adopted in this study to construct the first step of conceptual design. From the theory, the problems of system design is mainly to deal with three issues, which are the spatial analysis and optimization, motion conversion design for ladder, and the motion control of ladder. The spatial analysis is to investigate the optimal trajectory of ladder motion that the total space of the system can be minimized. It is done by assuming a specific geometrical property of ladder trajectory and solving the optimization problem through the parameter optimization. The motion conversion design is to invent an approach to change the configuration of ladder from either open-to-close or close-to-open status. To do so, a small section of ladder trajectory is asked to be flexible and a mechanism to trigger the configuration change is proposed. The motion control is to maintain the user located in an almost same location while the training is preceded. In this study, the PID control scheme is adopted to examine whether the control goal can be properly achieved.
This study reveals that a proper design can be obtained through the specific process of problem solving. The system is shown to function well when the above
three issues are solved by the proposed schemes.

Factors Associated with the Successful Vocational Rehabilitation of Individuals with Usher Syndrome: A Qualitative StudyWatters-Miles, Constance January 2014 (has links)
This qualitative study investigated the remembered lived experiences of six individuals who were diagnosed with Usher syndrome, the effect that the progressive condition had upon their lives, and their experiences with vocational rehabilitation. Usher syndrome is an autosomal recessive condition that presents as deafness or hearing loss with comorbid retinitis pigmentosa sometimes with vestibular areflexia. The participants recalled details of their own reaction to the diagnoses as well as the reactions of their parents. Themes were identified in their responses that included independent dependence, Usher support, parental reaction, lowered expectations, hope, and ongoing change. The participants, three men and three women, reported periods of adjustment and sadness as well as hopes for their future, career accomplishments, and social interactions.

Kai kurie socialinio darbuotojo veiklos bruožai, darbe su psichinę negalią turinčiais asmenimis gydymo įstaigoje / Certain characteristics of the social worker activities in his work with the persons with mental disorders in the health care institutionValavickaitė, Eglė 29 June 2009 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / A person, who once suffered a mental disease, most often remains affected by it for the rest of his whole life, while mental changes continue to increasingly aggravate and affect the personal development and social adjustment of the individual thus causing more and more problems to the patient and people surrounding him. Actually, mental patients undergo treatment during the whole of their lives; therefore, a psychiatric doctor and a nursing specialist taking care of his health, and an occupational therapist (social assistant), whose function is to take care of the return of the mental patient to the society and his social integration, become his attendants for the whole life. It is even more difficult to return to the society those people who have been suffering a mental disease for a long time and spent many years in special closed-type institutions: clinics or pension houses.
One of the extremely important areas of the activities of a social assistant dealing with mental patients is the organisation of their occupation, which, if organised properly, contributes a lot to the social rehabilitation of such persons.
The subject of the research: The opportunities in the activities of a social assistant dealing with mentally impaired persons in a treatment institution.
The objective of the research: To educe the opportunities of social rehabilitation in a treatment institution related to work with mentally impaired persons.
The hypothesis of the research: When the opportunities... [to full text]

Jean Vanier and The Transformational Model of Rehabilitation: Principles of Care for Concerned ProfessionalsForster, Donna Marie 26 October 2007 (has links)
Abstract
The focus of this thesis is stress in rehabilitation professionals. Within the thesis, burnout encompasses compassion fatigue and moral stress. Therefore, burnout is the emotional and ethical fatigue which is produced through organizational and clinical expectations present when working with individuals who live with disabilities. This thesis argues that current rehabilitation service delivery models exacerbate burnout through their neglect of emotional and ethical needs in professionals.
The goal of this thesis is to develop an alternative model of service delivery which addresses burnout in rehabilitation professionals. The thesis answers the following question. How does Jean Vanier's thinking about relationships between individuals, living with and without disabilities, contribute to the field of rehabilitation therapy and, more specifically, to reducing stress currently experienced by rehabilitation professionals? To answer this question and meet the thesis goal, the research is situated within a constructivist paradigm and uses a single, interpretive case study design.
This research has produced the transformational model of service delivery. This model states rehabilitation is a transformational process. Whereas traditional rehabilitation views the client as the focus of the change process, the transformational model states both the client and the professional benefit from their participation in a transformational change process. The change process is directed at the personal identity of both client and professional and is characterized by increased awareness and acceptance of key aspects within self and other. Whereas in more traditional rehabilitation models, creating the relational conditions necessary for change is the professional's responsibility, within the transformational rehabilitation model, both client and professional contribute to the relationship which is characterized by commitment, co-operation and compassion. In addition, client and professional experience the outcome of transformation, maturity. A mature person is defined by his/her capacity for agency and authenticity.
This thesis argues that Jean Vanier is relevant to rehabilitation professionals. The articulation of an alternative model of service delivery, based on Vanier's thinking about relationships between individuals living with and without disabilities, makes a significant contribution to reducing stress in rehabilitation professionals. / Thesis (Ph.D, Rehabilitation Science) -- Queen's University, 2007-10-05 08:51:06.833
