The theme of sexuality education is part of the Education Policy of the Recife Municipal Network, which guides pedagogical approaches to issues involving sexuality and gender from Early Childhood Education to Youth, Adult and Elderly Education (EJAI). In order to guide the teachers of the municipal network about the importance, the need and the ways to address the respective issues, the GTES offers continuous training in the themes related to sexual and gender diversity. The study identifies that although the GTES has already had more than 20 years of activity, its institutionalization is recent through an Administrative Rule, and the group still faces structural difficulties - lack of specific materials and didactic resources, lack of government support, resistance of schools and teachers to insert pedagogical approaches to sexuality and its diversity within the classroom. Among the barriers faced for the effectiveness of the work guided by the GTES, the strong influence of the prejudice of teachers, who are largely influenced by their religious affiliations, stands out; in this case, the Evangelical religion evidenced that in the sample of 12 teachers, 3 are totally resistant to the theme even though they have had training in the GTES, and among the teachers who show flexibility and interest in discussing and working on the theme, there is a lack of religion and belonging to the Catholic and / or Spiritist religions. The prejudice, heteronormative culture as a standard and the lack of insertion of the themes in the school curriculum show that, in spite of the advances achieved, the GTES still has great challenges in order to promote formations that allow the disruption of teachers with the prejudice rooted in their cultures and religious influences.

Attitudes of Faculty Members Toward the Integration of Faith and Discipline at Selected Southern Baptist Colleges and Universities

Cooper, Monte Vaughan 12 1900 (has links)
The attitudes toward the integration of faith and discipline of full-time faculty members at five selected Southern Baptist colleges and universities which are members of the Christian College Coalition were explored for this study. The integration of faith and discipline is a concept unique to Southern Baptist higher education. Arthur Walker, Jr., of the Education Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention defines the concept as referring to the mission of the institution, the personal faith of faculty members, and the professional involvement and interaction of faculty members with their students, regardless of disciplines. Since little information exists on faculty attitudes toward this concept, data were collected through a survey instrument on three dimensions of integration: professorial integration in the classroom, professorial integration in and out of the classroom, and institutional integration of faith and discipline.

What should religious education aim to achieve? : an investigation into the purpose of religious education in the public sphere

Hannam, Patricia M. January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with the question of what religious education should aim to achieve in the public sphere, and from that comes an interest in what is it that the teacher of religious education should aim to do. My enquiry is located, theoretically as well as conceptually, in the sphere of education. It is an educational study into religious education and situated in what can be termed a ‘Continental construction’ of educational research. I identify that since the inception of religious education in public schools in England, persistent assumptions have been made about both religion and education. I show how this has led, in my view, to conceptualisations of religious education which have been, and continue to be, incomplete. The central chapters of my thesis consider first religion and then education. This allows me to introduce my theoretical base, which is especially but not exclusively drawn from the work of Simone Weil and Hannah Arendt. I develop an argument suggesting that by also understanding religion existentially as faith, rather than as only belief or practice, will open new ways of considering the role of religious education in the public sphere. This is alongside an argument I develop with Arendt for education being conceptualised as bringing the child to action rather than to reason. This thesis argues for a broader understanding of religion, and therefore what it means to live a religious life, in religious education than has previously been considered. I bring this broader way of understanding what it means to live a religious life together with my argument for conceptualising education as bringing the child to action. This enables me to make a new proposal for what religious education should aim to achieve in the public sphere.

The role of the state in the establishment of a culture of learning and teaching in South Africa (1910-2004)

Baloyi, Colonel Rex 31 December 2004 (has links)
Formal state-controlled education has been a central element for social development in South Africa since the formation of the Union of South Africa in 1910. The establishment and promotion of a culture of learning and teaching is regarded as a pre-condition for high educational standards. This thesis is a study of the role of the state in the establishment of a culture of learning and teaching in South Africa from 1910 to 2004. To understand the role that the state played in promoting, or inhibiting, a culture of learning and teaching, a historical review was taken of the state's role in formal schooling in the period of the Union (1910-1947), the era of apartheid (1948-1989), the transitional period (1990-1994) and in the era of the democratic South Africa. As an ideal, the state has a responsibility to ensure the establishment of a culture of learning and teaching. The historical review revealed, however, that the state used its policies to promote political rather than educational ideologies - and in the process, there was a complete breakdown in a culture of learning and teaching. The establishment and promotion of a culture of learning and teaching towards the maintenance of high academic standards in South African state schools was the motivating force behind this study. Therefore, this study concludes with guidelines and recommendations grounded in the historical review that will hopefully promote a culture of learning and teaching in South African schools in future. / Educational Studies / D.Ed.
