No. of bitstreams: 1 2010_dis_eclima.pdf: 5731448 bytes, checksum: 3769e3c58030beebc0c41b178028623b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-08 / The research aimed to analyze the stability and efficiency of the anaerobic sulfate reduction applied to the treatment of effluent from a tannery. It was used two anaerobic reactors upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB), with capacity of 3.0 liters, constant temperature of 29 + 2°C and hydraulic detention times of 12 and 24 hours. The reactors were operated with synthetic influent and then with real influent. First, synthetic influent was studied using DQO/SO4 -2 ratio of 1.4, 0.8 and 0.5. The results showed that DQO/SO4 -2 ratio of 0.8 showed the best removal efficiency of COD (87,8%) and removal of sulfate (38,7%). After, the reactor was fed with real influent and removals of COD ranged from 20.4 to 58.5% and removal of sulfate from 39.4 to 73.9% in the different phases of this study. The sulfide formed inside the reactor helped remove chromium present in the real influent from 39.7 to 77.6%. In all experiments the reactor was stable in the production of alkalinity and total volatile fatty acid concentration was maintained at adequate levels. The results showed that the use of the process of sulfate reduction in UASB reactors is presented as a promising alternative to pretreat effluents from tannery, to meet the release limits imposed by environmental agencies.

Biodessulfatação com posterior oxidação parcial do sulfeto em reatores operados em bateladas seqüenciais / Biological sulphate removal with partial oxidation of sulfide in sequencial batch reactors

Silva, Ariovaldo José da 18 February 2005 (has links)
Sulfeto gerado no processo de biodessulfatação foi oxidado parcialmente a enxofre elementar, com eficiência de remoção de 80% no reator aeróbio / In anaerobic biological systems for wastewater treatment well-designed sulphate can be reduced to sulfide by sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB), and it can be subsequently oxidized to elemental sulphur, under low dissolved oxygen concentration ('< OU =' 0.1 mg/L). The present thesis evaluates the microbial sulphate reduction process in anaerobic sequencing batch biofilm reactors with immobilized biomass in polyurethane foam (PU) and vegetable coal (CV). Such support materials were previously selected by microbial adhesion tests executed in differential reactors. Afterwards, the effect of ethanol addition on the performance of sulphate reduction process was assessed. The main metabolic pathways of organic substrate utilization by microorganisms were identified by kinectic modelation. The microbial community was evaluated by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The partial sulfide oxidation process was also evaluated in aerobic sequencing batch reactor containing biomass immobilized in PU matrices. It was concluded by FISH that characteristics of the support materials has influence on the microbial equilibrium. The COD/['SO IND.4'POT.2-'] ratio equal to 1.3 provided the best condition for microbial sulphate reduction process in both reactors with mean efficience of 96%. The ethanol addition improved the sulphate reducing process. The sulfide generated was partialy oxidized to elemental sulphur in the aerobic reactor with removal efficience of 80%

Estudo da remoção de sulfato em biorreator operado em batelada e batelada alimentada seqüenciais, contendo biomassa imobilizada e utilizando agitação mecânica e \"draft-tube\" / Study on sulfate removal in an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor containing immobilized biomass, and utilizing mechanical agitation and \"draft-tube\"

Friedl, Gregor Franz 26 March 2008 (has links)
An anaerobic sequencing batch reactor treating synthetic low strength wastewater (500 mgCOD/L-1) enriched with different sulfate concentrations (COD/[SO42] ratios of 1,34, 0,67 and 0,34) was operated at different fill times (batch mode and sequencing batch mode of 3 h and 6 h fill time). The reactor operated with a capacity of 4,0 L and treated per 8-h cycle 2,0 L of synthetic wastewater. Thus, 9 different configurations resulted from this configuration and were submitted under analyses with the objective to investigate the influence of each of those parameters on the performance of the system. The reactor was operated at a constant temperature of 30 ± 1°C and an mechanical agitation rate of 400 rpm. Cubic particles of polyurethane were used as support material for anaerobic biomass immobilization. The results showed that operating the reactor with a fill time of 3 h and a COD/[4-2] ratio of 0,34 was the most eficient strategy for COD removal (89%). During the same operation mode (3 h fill time) sulfate removal seemed to suffer stagnation due to the increasing sulfite concentation in the reactor, whereas with a fill time of 6 h the sulfate load removal increased linerally with increasing sulfate load. So the biggest removal, in terms of volumetric sulfate load, was obtained operating the reactor in sequencing batch mode with a fill time of 6 h and a COD/[4-2] ratio of 0,34. During this test the reactor removed 0,55 gSO4-2/(L.d) of 2,29 gSO4-2/(L.d) applied on the system. Operating at a COD/[SO4-2] ratio of 1,34 and a fill time of 6 h the reactor obtained the best results in terms of sulfate removal efficiency, with 71% of the sulfate removed from the system. In the entire period of analisis the reactor showed stability with a suficient production of alkalinity to maintain the concentration of volatil acids in adequate levels.
