Texter i matematik är ofta multimodala, vilket innebär att de består av både ord, bilder och symboler. Forskning har visat att denna form av texter ställer höga krav på läsaren. Elever möter ofta olika sorters bilder, till exempel dekorativa, representativa och essentiella bilder, med olika syften i matematikundervisningen. Syftet med detta arbete var att undersöka hur olika sorters bilder påverkar elevers lösningar av textuppgifter i matematik, hur lärare anser att olika sorters bilder påverkar elevers förståelse och hur lärare undervisar elever i arbetet med bilder. Empirin samlades in genom kvalitativa intervjuer med lärare samt genom att elever i andra klass på två olika skolor löste textuppgifter med olika sorters bilder. Resultatet analyserades sedan utifrån det socialkonstruktivistiska perspektivet med fokus på: förstärkarsystem, scaffolding, internalisering, erfarenheter, strategi, mentala representationer samt visuellt stöd. Resultatet visade att lärarna använde mycket bilder i matematikundervisningen och att de ansåg att de representativa och schematiska bilderna var de som hade mest positiv effekt på elevernas lösningar. Majoriteten av eleverna ville ha bilder till matematikuppgifter och ansåg att de kunde få hjälp utav dessa. / Texts in mathematics are often multimodal, which means that they consist of both words, images and symbols. Research has shown that these kind of texts places high demand on the reader. Students often encounter different kinds of images, for example decorative, representative and essential images, with different purposes when learning mathematics. The purpose of this study was to investigate how different images affect the students' solutions to mathematical word problems, how teachers consider the different images to affect the pupils' understanding and how they teach pupils in working with images. The empirical data was collected through qualitative interviews with teachers and through word problems with different kinds of images solved by pupils in the second grade at two different schools. The result was then analyzed from the social constructivist perspective with a focus on: amplification systems, scaffolding, internalisation, prior experiences, strategies, mental representations and visual support. The results showed that the teachers used a lot of pictures in their teaching and that they considered the representative and schematic images to be the ones that had the most positive effect on pupils' solutions. The majority of the pupils wanted pictures for mathematical tasks and considered some of these helpful.
