Comparison of physical activities among Beninese adolescents attending schools in rural, suburban and urban areas.Gouthon, P, Falola, JM, Aremou, M, Dagba, J, Tossou, J, Legba, J, Brisswalter, J, Amusa,LO, Toriola, AL 06 1900 (has links)
The main objective of this study was to compare
the daily physical activities of secondary school
students living in South- West Benin Republic,
depending on whether they live in rural, suburban
or urban areas. An investigation through a written
and self-administered questionnaire was carried
out from April to June 2004 on 678 students
made up of 467 boys and 211 girls, aged 13 to 23
years old, regarding their movement modes,
physical sports practices and other utilitarian
activities. The data were analysed using
descriptive and inferential statistics. The results
showed that the percentages of students who go
on foot or ride bicycles for long distances or a
long time duration, and those who participate in
physical training as well as practice utilitarian
activities on weekly basis respectively, are far
higher for students in the rural locations than for
students in the other two locations, that is,
suburban and urban areas. On the whole the
highest proportion of students who engage in
physical activities consisting of riding bicycles,
traveling on foot, doing physical sports and
utilitarian activities are found among students
living in rural areas, followed by students in
suburban and urban locations. These results are
discusses in terms of their relationships with
atherogenous risk factors.

The official concept of the nation in the GDR : theory versus pragmatismMcKay, Joanna Patricia January 1995 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the attempts by the leadership of the GDR to devise a concept of the nation which suited their objectives regarding the future of the state and of Germany as a whole, from 1949 until 1989. A simple analysis of official pronouncements on the subject over the years reveals serious inconsistencies and dramatic U-turns. This thesis considers various factors which may have shaped the official line, including the influence of Bonn and Moscow, public opinion and personal convictions. In particular it examines the input of experts from academic institutions in order to answer the question of whether or not the official line on the nation had a clear theoretical basis, or was purely determined by pragmatic considerations. In order to investigate what lay behind official policy, extensive use has been made of material from the SED's Central Party Archive, and interviews were conducted with leading theorists. In this way it was possible to gain a better understanding of the interaction between the political and theoretical aspects of the National Question in the former GDR. The findings reveal that the official concept of the nation was primarily determined by pragmatic, or even opportunistic considerations, and was viewed by the SED leadership as a means to legitimise the GDR in the absence of alternative methods. Initially the intention was to reinforce the claim that the GDR was a model for a future united socialist Germany, but later a concept was fashioned to support the idea that it was an independent sovereign state, and in no way linked to the Federal Republic. However, the regime was heavily reliant on the skills of theorists to provide credible (Marxist-Leninist) justifications for policy changes, and to modify policies in order to make them more acceptable and therefore more effective as a means to legitimise the state.

Plato's political imaginationAnderson, Linda Viktoria. January 2006 (has links)
Traditional interpretations of Plato see him either as an enemy of the imagination in his views of philosophic discussion, or as a purveyor of imaginative lies in his authoritarian and anti-democratic view of politics. Instead this thesis challenges both these interpretations by showing how the imagination is both philosophical and democratically political. In the Republic images and stories balance and enrich rational argumentation. I first analyze the imaginary aspects of Plato's ideal city. Secondly, I look more closely to the role of images in education and poetry by focusing on Plato's distinction between good and bad images. Thirdly, I discuss the role of images in relation to notions of the ideal and democracy. I propose that images are crucial in crafting and acquiring a vision of the ideal in speech. Finally, I end by stressing that philosophic discussion, and its use of images, not only contains democratic elements but that it also is more likely to thrive in a democratic space and context, marked by freedom of speech and pluralism.
