Between texts : the resonant fictions of Sarah Waters

The central project of this thesis is to diagnose, define, and articulate the concept of resonance. Resonance is a deeply textual, but not intertextual, relationship that exists between fictional and theoretical texts, allowing the former to position itself as a co-discursive partner to the latter. This is achieved via the subtle importation of theoretical models into fictional settings. In this instance, a resonant relationship is traced between Sarah Waters’s three neo-Victorian novels – Tipping the Velvet, Affinity, and Fingersmith – and three publications which are representative of queer theory published in the early 1990s: Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity, Epistemology of the Closet by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick (both published in 1990), and Terry Castle’s The Apparitional Lesbian (1993). As the introduction to this thesis clarifies, Waters’s novels are particularly useful to the resonant critic. All three novels are popularly and critically established as part of the neo-Victorian genre, yet their participation in many of that genre’s defining processes – overt intertextuality, metafictionality, parody – is limited. Limited, too, is their relationship with the Victorian texts that so infuse the genre. It is not, however, that Waters’s novels completely fail to reach for textual models; rather, as this thesis establishes, they reach for models found in contemporary queer theory, rather than canonical Victorian novels. This thesis contends that Waters’s fictions are examples of a distinctive assimilation and reworking of the postmodern principles that have helped to make the contemporary historical novel so very popular. The novels’ determination to articulate previously silenced voices, meanwhile, gives rise to this thesis’s second project, also stated in the introduction: an examination of the homonormative lesbians found in Waters’s novels. Women love, desire, and cherish one another – but are also viciously cruel, devastatingly unfaithful, and coldly deceiving to one another. The thesis as a whole identifies the range of relationships and individuals strewn across Waters’s neo-Victorian output as a co-discursive reverberation with queer theory’s politicised calls for queer representation. Each chapter surveys the extant scholarship on each of Waters’s novels, before pairing each fictional text with the theoretical text with which it resonates, in order to systematically examine the resonant relationship. As such, the fictional and theoretical texts examined in this thesis are given equal weight; theory is not positioned as a lens through which fiction is to be read. Chapter 1 traces models of performativity, Gender Trouble’s dismantling of the originating status of the body, and the failure of feminism to represent the lesbian through the bold picaresque narrative of Tipping the Velvet. Chapter 2 identifies Affinity’s claustrophobic corridors and panoptic middle-class houses as a receptive environment for an importation and repositioning of Epistemology of the Closet’s homosexual panic and the spectacle of the closet. Finally, chapter 3 finds the rather less deconstructive approach to lesbian bodies in The Apparitional Lesbian suggestive of Waters’s project as a whole; with regards to Fingersmith in particular, triangulated relationships, blocking gestures, and the de-apparitionalising of the lesbian are established as evidence of the resonant relationship.

Estes estudos envolvem diferentes perturbações e ressonâncias nos movimentos orbitais destes objetos distribuídos por diferentes altitudes. Neste trabalho, o problema da ressonância no movimento de satélites artificiais é estudado. O desenvolvimento do geopotencial inclui os harmônicos zonais J20 e J40 e os harmônicos tesserais J22 e J42. Através de um procedimento de média e sucessivas transformações de Mathieu, a ordem do sistema dinâmico é reduzida e o sistema final é resolvido por integração numérica. No modelo dinâmico simplificado, três ângulos críticos são estudados. A semi-largura da separatriz é calculada através de um modelo linearizado, o qual descreve o comportamento do sistema dinâmico na vizinhança de cada ângulo crítico. Através do critério de sobreposição das ressonâncias, os possíveis movimentos regulares e irregulares são investigados pelo comportamento no tempo do semi-eixo maior, argumento do pericentro e excentricidade. O maior expoente de Lyapunov é usado como ferramenta para verificar o movimento caótico. Nos estudos sobre os objetos ressonantes, os TLE (Two-Line Elements) do NORAD (North American Defense) são estudados observando o período ressonante dos objetos orbitando a Terra e a ressonância principal na região LEO (Low Earth Orbits). O comportamento no tempo do semi-eixo maior, excentricidade e inclinação de alguns satélites artificiais e detritos espaciais são estudados. Possíveis movimentos irregulares são observados pela presença de diferentes ângulos ressonantes descrevendo a dinâmica orbital destes objetos / Abstract: The increasing number of objects orbiting the Earth justifies the great attention and interest in the space between the Planet and the Moon in the last years. These studies involve different disturbances and resonances in the orbital motions of these objects distributed by the distinct altitudes. In this work, the resonance problem in the artificial satellites motion is studied. The development of the geopotential includes the zonal harmonics J20 and J40 and the tesseral harmonics J22 and J42. Through an averaging procedure and successive Mathieu transformations, the order of dynamical system is reduced and the final system is solved by numerical integration. In the simplified dynamical model, three critical angles are studied. The half-width of the separatrix is calculated through a linearized model which describes the behavior of the dynamical system in a neighborhood of each critical angle. Through the resonance overlap criterion the possible regular and irregular motions are investigated by the time behavior of the semimajor axis, argument of perigee and eccentricity. The largest Lyapunov exponent is used as tool to verify the chaotic motion. In the studies about the resonant objects the TLE (Two-Line Elements) of the NORAD are studied observing the resonant period of the objects orbiting the Earth and the main resonance in the LEO region. The time behavior of the semi-major axis, eccentricity and inclination of some artificial satellites and space debris are studied. NMR imaging : instrumentation and techniques

This thesis presents three original contributions to the field of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR): The experimental framework and analysis for the measurement of a new imaging parameter to describe perfusion; The measurement and analysis of magnetic field inhomogeneity and a practical correction system for their reduction; A novel system for the synchronous control of NMR experiments based on the microprogrammed concept. The thesis begins with an introduction to the theory of NMR. The application of NMR to imaging is also introduced with emphasis on the techniques which developed into those in common use today. Inaccurate determination of the traditional NMR parameters (T1 and T2 and the molecular diffusion coefficient) can be caused by non-diffusive fluid movement within the sample. The experimental basis for determining a new imaging parameter - the Perfusion coefficient - is presented. This provides a measure of forced isotropic fluid motion through an organ or tissue. The instrumentation required for conducting NMR experiments is described in order to introduce the contribution made in this area during this research: A sequence controller. The controller is based on the concept of microprogramming and enables completely synchronous output of 128 bits of data. The software for the generation and storage of control data and the regulation of the data to provide experimental control is microcomputer based. It affords precise and accurate regulation of the magnetic field gradients, the rf synthesizer and the spectrometer for spectroscopic and imaging applications. Fundamental to the science of NMR is the presence of a magnetic field. A detailed study of the analysis of magnetic field inhomogeneity in terms of spherical harmonics is presented. The field of a whole body imaging system with poor inhomogeneity was measured and analyzed to determine and describe the components of the inhomogeneity. Finally a description is given of the design and application of practical methods for reducing the dominant inhomogeneities.

Intermediate scale NMR imaging

The design, construction and calibration of an intermediate scale NMR imaging system is described. The system is based on a 7" diameter, room temperature bore superconducting magnet at a field of 0.4T. Using selective excitation and projection reconstruction techniques, the production of density, spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation weighted images has been achieved. An investigation of the feasibility of in-vivo tissue characterisation using NMR parameters has been carried out. Tissue characterisation using healthy animals of different ages, sex and species has shown that characterisation with the NMR parameters of T1** and T2** is feasible on a given system, where 1/T1** and 1/T2** are the spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation rates calculated from the images assuming these rates to be mono-exponential. It is shown that the scatter in results which previously was believed by other authors to be due to biological variation is in fact due to experimentation and instrumentation, and that the biological limit has yet to be reached. The successful employment of quantitative characterisation in the observation and monitoring of diseased states is illustrated by two examples. The first shows the growth of a tumour and the second uses T1* to observe the effect of toxic drugs on the kidney. In the latter case, little evidence of damage was visible on the image. Following characterisation, it is demonstrated that it is possible to optimise an imaging sequence by careful selection of the timing parameters. Optimisation of the sequences used in this work gave an increase of upto a factor of two in the signal-to-noise ratio and increased the accuracy of the relaxation rate evaluation. Finally, a technique for obtaining a map of the spatial distribution of the molecular translational diffusion coefficient together with perfusion and flow information has been developed. These parameters may well enhance the contrast as well as providing new information on the biological system.

Development of an ECR ion source with a high ionization efficiency

Separation of rare or expensive isotopes, whether radioactive or stable, requires a high efficiency of the separation process. Electromagnetic isotope separation is the most widely-used of all separation processes. Its separation efficiency depends mainly upon the ionization efficiency of its ion source. An Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source has been developed for the separation of both stable and radioactive isotopes on account of its high ionization efficiencies. The maximum ionization efficiencies achieved with the ECR ion source for singly charged ions for a range of materials were: radioiodine (8%), carbon (10%), nitrogen (26%), oxygen (53%), neon (31%) and xenon (83%). A computer code ECREFF, based on the atomic processes which occur in the plasma, is described for the calculation of the ionization efficiency of an ECR ion source. The experimental and calculated data are compared.
