"More than pink - we want to think!" : A qualitative study

Background: Reinforcing gender stereotypes still occurs in toy advertisements even though it is stated that gender stereotyping in marketing is a public concern. Parents perception of gender stereotyping will further influence how children act according to gender, which is why it is of importance to explore how parents perceive gender stereotyped advertising towards their children and how this is linked to socially responsible marketing. Research questions: RQ: What are the perceptions of Swedish parents on gender stereotypes in advertisements targeted at children, and how can this be linked to socially responsible marketing? SQ1: What are the perceptions of parents on advertisements towards children where stereotyped gender roles are being reinforced? SQ2: What are the perceptions of parents on advertisements towards children where stereotyped gender roles are being challenged? Purpose: The purpose of this research is to link the idea of socially responsible marketing with gender stereotyping and advertising targeting children. Methodology: Using visual materials as stimuli in semi-structured focused interviews. Conclusion: The empirical investigation revealed that parents perceived gender stereotypes in advertising as harmful to society, particularly to children. Socially responsible marketing should therefore reflect more on this subject and portray both girls and boys sharing colors, attributes and toys.

An investigation into the competency framework required for the responsible pharmacist in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector in South Africa

>Magister Scientiae - MSc / The pharmaceutical manufacturing sector operates within a highly regulated environment, with companies accountable to South African statutory bodies. The responsible pharmacist (RP) is responsible for their company’s adherence to the legislation requirements. Whilst the Pharmacy and the Medicines Acts outline the RP’s, there is no mandatory training requirement prior to registration as an RP, nor thereafter. This study investigated the role and competencies required of newly registered RPs in meeting their professional responsibilities in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector. An online survey questionnaire elicited responses from RPs (n=102) about views and perceptions pertaining to their role and responsibilities. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted with statutory (n=3) and non-statutory representatives (n=5). Survey findings indicated that the majority (89,5%) of RPs felt competent and that they possessed the necessary skills and training. Almost two-thirds of respondents (63,2%) were experienced RPs who shared some reservations, that RPs may be excluded from far-reaching decisions with potential consequences for the company and patients. They added that RP performance monitoring was not regular, which may indicate that some companies view the RP as an appointment of convenience. The majority of respondents (89,5 %) were in favour of the development of training guidelines Findings from the semi-structured interviews indicated that RPs were not fully aware of their scope of duties and the implications thereof. The interviewees were also concerned that some companies, by not giving the RP role the level of importance and authority it required, were practicing tokenism. Further, that not all RPs had the necessary in-depth knowledge of the applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and codes. A competency framework for newly appointed RPs is needed to streamline their roles and responsibilities in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector

Developing Anticipatory Life Cycle Assessment Tools to Support Responsible Innovation

abstract: Several prominent research strategy organizations recommend applying life cycle assessment (LCA) early in the development of emerging technologies. For example, the US Environmental Protection Agency, the National Research Council, the Department of Energy, and the National Nanotechnology Initiative identify the potential for LCA to inform research and development (R&D) of photovoltaics and products containing engineered nanomaterials (ENMs). In this capacity, application of LCA to emerging technologies may contribute to the growing movement for responsible research and innovation (RRI). However, existing LCA practices are largely retrospective and ill-suited to support the objectives of RRI. For example, barriers related to data availability, rapid technology change, and isolation of environmental from technical research inhibit application of LCA to developing technologies. This dissertation focuses on development of anticipatory LCA tools that incorporate elements of technology forecasting, provide robust explorations of uncertainty, and engage diverse innovation actors in overcoming retrospective approaches to environmental assessment and improvement of emerging technologies. Chapter one contextualizes current LCA practices within the growing literature articulating RRI and identifies the optimal place in the stage gate innovation model to apply LCA. Chapter one concludes with a call to develop anticipatory LCA – building on the theory of anticipatory governance – as a series of methodological improvements that seek to align LCA practices with the objectives of RRI. Chapter two provides a framework for anticipatory LCA, identifies where research from multiple disciplines informs LCA practice, and builds off the recommendations presented in the preceding chapter. Chapter two focuses on crystalline and thin film photovoltaics (PV) to illustrate the novel framework, in part because PV is an environmentally motivated technology undergoing extensive R&D efforts and rapid increases in scale of deployment. The chapter concludes with a series of research recommendations that seek to direct PV research agenda towards pathways with the greatest potential for environmental improvement. Similar to PV, engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) are an emerging technology with numerous potential applications, are the subject of active R&D efforts, and are characterized by high uncertainty regarding potential environmental implications. Chapter three introduces a Monte Carlo impact assessment tool based on the toxicity impact assessment model USEtox and demonstrates stochastic characterization factor (CF) development to prioritize risk research with the greatest potential to improve certainty in CFs. The case study explores a hypothetical decision in which personal care product developers are interested in replacing the conventional antioxidant niacinamide with the novel ENM C60, but face high data uncertainty, are unsure regarding potential ecotoxicity impacts associated with this substitution, and do not know what future risk-relevant experiments to invest in that most efficiently improve certainty in the comparison. Results suggest experiments that elucidate C60 partitioning to suspended solids should be prioritized over parameters with little influence on results. This dissertation demonstrates a novel anticipatory approach to exploration of uncertainty in environmental models that can create new, actionable knowledge with potential to guide future research and development decisions. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Civil and Environmental Engineering 2016

Having Responsible Power Leads to Sexual Harassment? The Explanatory Role of Moral Licensing

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Feeling powerful or possessing power over someone is often shown in the sexual harassment literature as an antecedent. Indeed, power can be construed in a self-focused manner or in a responsibility-focused manner. Tost (2015) theorized that powerholders who construe their power as responsibility should then act for the benefit of others. However, a recent study by Stockdale, Gilmer, and Dinh (2019) found the opposite effect. Specifically, they found that priming responsibility-focused power increased the intention to sexually harass, speculating that priming such powers may have created a “moral license” (Miller & Effron, 2010) to engage in sexual harassment. The purpose of the present study is to extend their findings by examining the role of moral licensing. I hypothesize that participants who are in the responsibility-focused power priming condition will engage in sexual harassment proclivities through a serial mediation of communal feelings and moral licensing (moral crediting and moral credentialing). Results confirm that communal feelings and moral crediting serially mediate the relationship between responsibility-focused power and sexual harassment proclivities. The hypothesized role of moral credentialing was not supported. Findings in this study provides a potential explanation for the paradoxical findings of responsibility-focused power in Stockdale et al. (2019)’s study. This study also emphasizes the importance of understanding responsibility-focused power in sexual harassment indices and the potential the ironic effects of having such power via moral crediting.

Do Socially Responsible Mutual Funds Outperform Non-Socially Responsible Mutual Funds under A Regime-Switching Model?

In this thesis, the regime dependent mean and abnormal returns are studied to examine whether socially responsible mutual funds have a different performance from traditional mutual funds, since there may be different patterns in the economy. Five economic factors - stock returns, treasury yield spread, credit spread, economic confidence and building permits - are used to identify the market regimes, which are determined as bear and bull markets. The regime-dependent abnormal returns are calculated with a regime-switching Fama & French three factor asset-pricing model. The empirical results show that socially responsible mutual funds have statistically higher mean return than non-socially responsible mutual funds in both bear and bull markets. However, using the measurement of the abnormal returns, socially responsible mutual funds statistically underperform non-socially responsible mutual funds in bull market, while the performance of the two types of funds are not statistically differentiable in the bear market.

Chasing Responsible Sourcing: The case of UK retailers and sustainable seafood

Responsible Sourcing is gaining growing importance for companies willing to demonstrate responsibility and commitment to sustainable practices. Sourcing is a key element of supply chain management and by adopting responsible sourcing practices, companies can greatly contribute to the sustainability of their entire supply chains. Being close to both customers and suppliers, retailers hold a particularly influential position in the supply chain and their sourcing choices can play a key role for sustainability improvements. This paper investigates the different strategies that can be adopted to guarantee responsible sourcing in the retail sector, through the specific case study of two UK retailers, Sainsbury´s and Tesco, and their offer of sustainable seafood. Specifically, the relation between the offer of MSC certified products and the retailers´ commitment to source responsibly is here analysed. The main source of data collection is a content analysis of retailers´ CSR online reports and web pages. Additional information is obtained through reports and web pages’ analysis of four UK organizations dealing with sustainable seafood issues. The findings of the study suggest that the offer of MSC certified products is positively correlated with the adoption of responsible sourcing practices; different strategies are available to retailers to guarantee responsible sourcing and that retailers´ sourcing policies can be influenced by other stakeholders´ guidelines for responsible sourcing.

Many innovative businesses have discovered an added value in collaborating with experts, users or other stakeholders in developing innovative products or services. Not all collaboration with stakeholders, however, corresponds to the criteria for opening up an innovation process to the needs of societal actors under the terms of responsible innovation. The question of what makes collaboration meaningful in the sense of responsible innovation was presented and discussed in a 75 min workshop at the European Science Open Forum (ESOF) in Toulouse, France in June 2018. Identified success factors and challenges for making a collaboration process meaningful for the collaborating parties highlight the importance of competent process preparation and facilitation, investment of time and effort to enable mutual understanding and the development of trustful relationships as well as the collaborating partners' willingness to implement changes that result from the collaboration process.

The (mis)alignment of ESG perspectives in the investment chain

As evidenced by the rapid increase of United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI) signatories, the integration of environmental, social and governance indicators (ESG) in investment decisions has become a popular topic. However, despite its popularity, there is no consensus among practitioners on what this actually means and how it should be tackled. The obvious lack of standardization is reflected by divergent ESG rating procedures, incomparable company sustainability reports and the widely differing strategies by asset managers and asset owners. This is a substantial hurdle as it can cause misalignment of perspectives within the investment chain, which keeps ESG from being pushed up the agenda. There appear to be substantial struggles on the road to ESG integration and several questions arise; are the perspectives on ESG integration aligned between companies, asset managers and asset owners? Where do possible obstacles on the road to responsible investment reside, what are they and how can they be overcome? My main findings are four-fold. First, I find ESG reporting fatigue among companies due to the sheer number of ESG ratings and rankings. Companies should not let this overwhelm them and be clear that they only respond to a handful. Investors should only use it as a starting point and ensure that it does not become a substitute for a real conversation with their portfolio companies about ESG. This interest is necessary for top management to sign off on sustainability initiatives. Second, I find that asset owners are not as convinced of the business case of ESG as asset managers and companies are. This is often reflected in the way they select, monitor and review their asset managers. Third, the lack of in-depth ESG due diligence by asset owners likely lets asset managers get away with decoupling statements from actions. More specifically, it appears that ESG and finance are often still separated. Lastly, companies are more reactive than proactive when it comes to ESG efforts. The main driver for them to embark on their ESG journey is the consumer. We can therefore play a significant role in creating a more sustainable world, either as the beneficiary or the consumer.

Strategic management and the role of business strategy in responsible purchasing and supply

Corporate social responsibility in global supply chains has become an increasingly salient issue for many organisations. In a response to this, the aim of this research is to consider the influence of strategic management, and in particular the role of business strategy, in shaping socially and environmentally responsible purchasing and supply management activities. In examining this theme, this research draws heavily upon recent conceptualisations of the relationship between strategic management and corporate social responsibility, and empirically assesses this relationship with a focus on such practices within the supply chain. Using a novel data collection approach to capture firms’ actual social and environmental supply management activities, these data draw on interviews with 178 UK-based firms and observations of 340 separate buyer-supplier relationships. Primary data were supplemented with secondary data to capture both industry and firm characteristics. This methodology minimises social desirability bias and common source bias. The findings suggest that responsible purchasing and supply management is strongly driven by business strategy in the business to consumer market. In contrast, in the business to business market such initiatives are largely influenced by firms’ financial resources and economic obligations. In both the business to consumer and business to business sector, however, business strategy and financial resources are contingent on the industry environment. Hence, the industry environment plays a significant, albeit indirect, role in shaping socially and environmentally responsible purchasing and supply management activities. This research offers one of the first insights into how strategic management, and in particular how business strategy, influences firms’ investments in socially and environmentally responsible purchasing and supply management initiatives. Through conceptual and empirical investigations this research highlights this relationship and notes the importance of integrating business strategy with general supplier practices, with a focus on the implementation of corporate social responsibility in individual buyer-supplier relationships.
