Shrinkage amid Growth

In general, the project I am going to present has two parts, the first part was finished in my first master year (2020.05) and further improved during past days, while the second part is what I have been focused on during the thesis. together, they worked as a complete circle in the project. From the reality perspective, what caught my attention was the two opposite trends during urban development – growing and shrinking.      -The cities in growth nowadays, especially megacities, are facing huge challenges on housing shortages, transportation pressures, overpopulation issues etc. for centuries, while these problems are still unsolved? Why?     -The cities in shrinkage are in a totally different scenario, there is no housing shortages, no transportation pressures, no overpopulation issues, but why people are still leaving? My answer to these questions is that some parts of our societal system have been ‘unevolved’ for too long, such as the economical system. In this sci-fi project, I imagined the world after a catastrophe will be provided with a chance to reform……

Environmental activism, anarchist methodology, and Indigenous resurgence: renewed possibilities for ecological security in Canada

As climate change becomes a pressing concern for policymakers and citizens around the world, a variety of security discourses have emerged framing the environment as a security issue. While dominant frameworks focus on securing national interests, the international order, or individuals in vulnerable positions, the ecological security framework presents a radical alternative discourse. Ecological security requires a refocusing of the security discourse onto the environment itself, vulnerable communities, and future generations, and requires the exploration of alternative forms of social and economic organization. This framework has often been discounted as an impractical and radical alternative to dominant discourses, however, in this thesis I argue that ecological security can, and is, being enacted by local communities around the world. Similarly overlooked, yet highly relevant to ecological security, is anarchist political thought and methodology. I suggest that anarchist methodology, when employed by environmental activists through direct action, can enable the enactment of ecological security by local communities. By investigating the connections and overlap between blockadia activism, anarchist methodology, and Indigenous resurgence, it is possible to envision a locally-based, bottom-up model of ecological security. Through an investigation of the conflict between Wet’suwet’en land defenders and the Coastal GasLink pipeline, this blockadia-anarchist-ecological security nexus is drawn out and examined as a possible path forward for climate security. / Graduate

That’s my Grandma: my Grandmother’s stories, resistance and remembering

Knowing our stories as Indigenous peoples is a powerful means of remembering and resurgence. My research used an Indigenous storytelling methodology to gather stories from my Grandmother about her life and our family. The purpose of this work was to learn more about my family stories and history as an Anishinaabe person, to honour my Grandmother by sharing part of her life story and to offer an example of Indigenous family-based research to other researchers. In contrast to strategies that focus on political mobilization, legal gains or state recognition, family-based research sees collective transformation as beginning with small-scale change, remembering and reconnection. What Comes Up? Analyzing Patterns of Resurgence using PORTL

The term "resurgence" generally refers to the reappearance of certain behaviors during extinction. Different definitions describe these behaviors as previously reinforced, previously extinguished, or simply previously learned. At first glance, these definitions seem the same. And, researchers have not given much thought to the differences between them. However, these definitions could refer to different initial teaching procedures, and these differences may produce different results during extinction. The present study used the Portable Operant Research and Teaching Lab (PORTL) to examine how differences in the initial teaching procedure affected the behavior of college students during extinction. In the first condition, participants learned four behaviors. Each behavior was extinguished before the next behavior was taught. When all four behaviors were put on extinction, they resurged in the reverse order from how they were taught. A second condition followed the same procedure as the first with one difference. Each behavior was not extinguished before the next behavior was taught. When these four behaviors were put on extinction, they resurged in the order they were learned. These results indicate that the initial training procedure can influence the order in which behaviors appear during extinction.

Using Competing Stimuli to Minimize Resurgence of Challenging Behavior during Fixed-lean Schedules of Reinforcement Following Functional Communication Training for Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, often engage in challenging behavior that severely limits positive outcomes. Although treatment packages comprising functional communication training and multiple schedules of reinforcement have demonstrated great promise to both increase appropriate, socially acceptable communication responses for preferred items and decrease challenging behavior associated with not having access to preferred items, resurgence of challenging behavior has been reported to occur during lengthy periods when preferred items are not available (i.e., extinction). This study evaluated whether noncontingent access to an alternative item during an abrupt shift to a lengthy period of extinction would reduce the extent of challenging behavior. Two children with Autism Spectrum Disorder participated. The results of this study indicated that (a) functional communication training successfully reduced challenging behavior and increased the rate of functional communication responses (FCR) for both participants, (b) multiple schedules of reinforcement (i.e., signaled periods of reinforcement and extinction for FCRs) successfully produced discriminated FCRs, and (c) no major differences in challenging behavior were observed when alternative items were presented during the abrupt shift to a terminal period of extinction versus when alternative items were not presented. Limitations and future directions of research are discussed.

Selected Neuropharmacology of Resurgence

Resurgence refers to the reappearance of an extinguished operant behavior when reinforcement for an alternative behavior is also discontinued. It is especially relevant to the reappearance of problem behavior because many behavioral interventions discontinue reinforcement for aberrant behavior while simultaneously reinforcing an appropriate response. Existing information about the neuropharmacology of resurgence is scarce, but suggests overlap between drug seeking observed in the resurgence model and drug seeking observed in the more widely studied reinstatement and renewal models. The aim of this dissertation was to explore additional neural systems relevant to reinstatement and renewal preparations within a resurgence paradigm to assess further overlap. The neuropharmacology of resurgence was examined in two studies via administration of two drugs that have proven effective in blocking drug seeking in reinstatement and renewal preparations. In two experiments, rats earned food pellets for pressing a target lever in Phase I. In Phase II, lever pressing no longer produced food, but food was delivered contingent on an alterative nose poke response. Finally in Phase III, neither response produced food deliveries. Prior to these Phase III sessions, separate groups of rats were injected with 0, 50, or 100 mcg/kg of the dopamine D-2 receptor antagonist raclopride in Experiment 1 or 0, 20, or 40 mcg/kg of alpha-2 agonist clonidine in Experiment 2. Both doses of raclopride were effective in blocking resurgence, but there was strong evidence that the higher dose did so via motor rather than motivational impairment. Furthermore, the lower dose significantly suppressed the alternative nose poke, which suggests motor impairment, as well. Only the higher dose of clonidine blocked resurgence, but did so with no evidence of motor impairment. Raclopride significantly impacted extinction of the alternative poke at both doses tested, whereas clonidine had no effect at either dose. The results of the present studies provide additional information about the neuropharmacology of resurgence, as well as additional evidence of overlap between resurgence, reinstatement, and renewal. The present results may also have implications regarding underlying neural mechanisms and for pharmacotherapies to attenuate relapse when alternative sources of reinforcement are thinned or discontinued.

The Place for Indigenous Knowledge in a Sport for Development Program

This thesis contains two stand-alone articles for which the overall purpose is to learn from the experiences of a non-Indigenous SFD program designed for Indigenous youth, by exploring how the program has dealt with questions of Indigenous knowledge, culture, and worldviews. By looking at how the program officers and managers articulate their experiences and challenges within the different phases of designing, managing and implementing the SFD program, this study examines questions of decolonization, Indigenization, and resurgence. The first article utilizes an Indigenous resurgence lens to explore the challenges of running the Promoting Life Skills in Aboriginal Youth (PLAY) program through the reflective discourses of middle-upper level management staff members. The main objectives of the first article are to 1) explore the perception of the PLAY staff on challenges experienced within program design and development generally, 2) analyze those challenges in light of critical research on SFD, and 3) inform program development with Indigenous youth. In the second article, I examine the experiences and perceptions of the staff and in dealing more specifically with the question of culture and Indigenous knowledge and Indigenization. This article highlights the experiences that occurred during a two-year period of Indigenous leadership, two years after the piloting of the program. The objectives of this article are to 1) consider and examine the place of culture within SFD for Indigenous youth 2) highlight and learn from Indigenous leadership experience in a Western-based program 3) inform program development.

Preliminary reading and research with Anishanaabe Maamwaye Aki Kiigayewin and the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation (MNCFN) indicated that integrating Indigenous Knowledge and Practices into existing social innovation strategies is not always sufficient to provide useful tools for Indigenous innovation process. However, it became clear that social innovation shares common ground with the Indigenous resurgence movement and, when considered along with critical indigenist research strategies, can provide direction for Indigenous innovations at multiple scales. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a preliminary exploration of social innovation from a critical indigenist perspective to increase its utility in Indigenous contexts. Together with Anishanaabe Maamwaye Aki Kiigayewin and MNCFN, and following Indigenous scholars, I have strived to implement
critical indigenist methodologies by linking critical and Indigenous methodologies through action-oriented research to address the asserted
needs and interests of Indigenous partners. Through this critical indigenist approach, I have strived to implement participant observation, reflexivity, and settler storytelling to fulfill my research objectives. Through a discussion of current initiatives undertaken by Anishanaabe Maamwaye Aki Kiigayewin, I demonstrate that major themes and strategies of social innovation are useful in supporting the resurgence of Indigenous Knowledge and Practices. This discussion results in the conclusion that Indigenous innovation is a unique type of social innovation informed by Indigenous Knowledge to promote the resurgence of Indigenous Knowledge and Practices. From this position, I propose a conceptual model for Indigenous innovation that links resilience, social innovation, Indigenous resurgence, and critical indigenist research strategies with the intent to lay a foundation for further development of a historicized, culturally appropriate model that promotes the resurgence of Indigenous Knowledge and Practice. I demonstrate the utility of this model by using it to organize a description of current initiatives underway in MNCFN and then using it to speculate on future initiatives that may foster successful innovation(s) in MNCFN Traditional Territory. In conclusion, articulating Indigenous innovation as a unique type of social innovation may lead to developing approaches to relationship building and knowledge integration that are culturally appropriate and ultimately more useful for Indigenous innovators looking to implement them.

Cues Associated with Alternative Reinforcement can Attenuate Resurgence of an Extinguished Instrumental Response

In resurgence, a target behavior (R1) is acquired in an initial phase and extinguished in a second phase while an alternative behavior (R2) is reinforced. When reinforcement for the second response is removed, however, R1 behavior returns or “resurges.” The resurgence paradigm may have implications for understanding relapse after behavioral interventions in humans such as contingency management, or CM, in which (for example) drug users can earn vouchers contingent upon drug abstinence. The present experiments examined the effectiveness of a putative retrieval cue for treatment in attenuating the resurgence effects and determined the likely mechanism by which this cue functions. Experiment 1 established that a 2-second cue associated with delivery of the alternative reinforcer in Phase 2 can attenuate R1 resurgence and promote R2 behavior during testing. Experiment 2 demonstrated that this effect occurs regardless of whether the cue is delivered contingently or noncontingently on responding during the resurgence test, and Experiment 3 demonstrated that for the cue to be effective in reducing resurgence, it must be paired with alternative reinforcement during Phase 2. This might mean that pairing the cue with reinforcement serves to maintain attention to the cue. Experiment 4 suggested that a cue paired with alternative reinforcement did not serve as a conditioned reinforcer in that making it contingent on a new behavior did not increase the likelihood of that behavior. Experiment 5 demonstrated that the cue must be experienced in sessions that also include the extinction of R1. Experiment 6 found that a cue produced by R1 during the second phase of a resurgence paradigm (analogous to a conditioned inhibitor) does not attenuate resurgence of an extinguished instrumental response. Together, the results suggest that a neutral cue can serve as an effective cue that attenuates resurgence if it is first paired with alternative reinforcement and presented in sessions in which R1 is extinguished. One way to view the results is that creating greater generalization between the extinction context and the testing context results in less resurgence.
