Previous issue date: 2002 / Resumo: Metropolís, dirigido por Fritz Lang em 1926, é um filme fundador que criou uma estética própria e influenciou inúmeras realizações posteriores. Blade Runner, dirigido por Ridley Scott em 1982, cita e reelabora diversos elementos de Metropolís, ao mesmo tempo em que se apresenta como um dos filmes mais representativos da década de 80. Esta dissertação de mestrado realiza uma minuciosa análise dos dois filmes e suas inter-relações, partindo do princípio de que Blade Runner apresenta características estéticas, narrativas e ideológicas já tratadas no Metropolis de Lang, em 1926, mas com "fôlego" redimensionado aos anos 80. A dissertação se organiza em torno de três eixos principais: a cidade, a metalinguagem e as alegorias. No 1° capítulo da dissertação são analisadas as fontes estéticas que deram origem às metrópoles futuristas de Fritz Lang e RidIey Scott. O foco se dirige para a arquitetura, elemento relevante em ambos os filmes, a ponto de a cidade ganhar status de protagonista. A reflexão sobre a articulação entre tempo e espaço na metrópole dá ensejo a meditações sobre elementos como o gótico, o kitsch, o expressionismo,o futurismo, o film noir, etc. No 2º capítulo, "Os Olhos da Metrópole ou As Mídias dentro da Mídia", emerge o tema da metalinguagem, ou como são tratadas as questões da mídia e das tecnologias de comunicação (fotografia, cinema e vídeo), tanto por Lang quanto por Scott. Neste capítulo ganha destaque a discussão acerca dos simulacros, tema presente em ambos os filmes estudados. No 3º e último capítulo, o foco incide sobre como se constroem as lendas de Metropolis e Blade Runner, com o propósito de identificar o discurso ideológico ou a crítica social contidos nos personagens e na ação desses dois fIlmes, dos quais, sobressaem aspectos como a religião, o tema do duplo e discursos político raciais. Na conclusão são amarradas as proposições levantadas nos capítulos anteriores, com vistas a associar Metropolis e Blade Runner a projetos respectivamente moderno e pós-moderno de sociedades do futuro / Abstract: Metropolís, directed by Fritz Lang in 1925-6, is a foundational film which launched a new aesthtetics and became extremely influencial. Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott in 1982, quotes and re-elaborates several elements of Metropolis, becoming one of the most representative movies of the 80's. This Master's dissertation cames on a detailed analysis of both films and their inter-relations, departing from the idea that Blade Runner presents aesthetic, narrative and ideological issues already approached by Lang in 1926, but under a perspective of the 80's. This dissertation is structured around three axes: the city, the metalanguage and the allegories. Thus, in the 1st chapter of the thesis, "The Architecture of the Metropolis: Metropolis, 2026; Los Angeles, 2019", the aesthetic sources of Lang's and Scott's futuristic metropolis are analysed. In focus is the architecture, an element so relevant in both films that the city acquires the status of protagonist. The reflection on the articulation between time and space in the metropolis is followed by meditations on elements such as the gothic, the kitsch, the expressionism, the futurism, the film noir, etc. The 2nd chapter, "The Eyes of the Metropolis or The Media inside the Mediun", deals with the issue of the metalanguage, lookíng at how the media and communication technologies (photography, cinema and video) are approached by Lang and Scott. Special attention is given to the discussion on simulacra, present in both the films. The 3rd chapter, "Constructing the Legend", explains how the legends of Metropolis and Blade Runner are constructed. The aim is to identify the ideological discourse and the social critique suggested by the characters and the action of both fIlms, taking into consideration aspects such as religion, the double and racial and political speeches. The conclusion ties up the arguments raised in the previous chapters, finally associating Metropolis and Blade Runner respectively to modem and postmodern projects of future societies / Mestrado / Multimeios

Evidence for Hierarchical Structuring and Large-Scale Connectivity in Eastern Pacific Olive ridley Sea Turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea)Ian M Silver-Gorges (6630767) 11 June 2019 (has links)
<div>Inferring genetic population structure in endangered, highly migratory species such as sea turtles is a necessary but difficult task in order to design conservation and management plans. Genetically discrete populations are not obvious in highly migratory species, yet require unique conservation planning due to unique spatial and behavioral life-history characteristics. Population structure may be inferred using slowly evolving mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), but some populations may have diverged recently and are difficult to detect using mtDNA. In these cases, rapidly evolving nuclear microsatellites may better elucidate population structuring. Bayesian inference and ordination may be useful for assigning individuals to inferred populations when populations are unknown. It is important to carefully examine population inference results to detect hierarchical population structuring, and to use multiple, mathematically diverse methods when inferring and describing population structure from genetic data. Here I use Bayesian inference, ordination, and multiple genetic analyses to investigate population structure in Olive ridley sea turtles (ORs; Lepidochelys olivacea) nesting in northwestern Costa Rica (NWCR) and across the entire Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP). Mitochondrial DNA did not show structure within NWCR, and existing data from prior studies are not appropriately published to compare NWCR to Mexican ORs. In NWCR, Bayesian inference suggested one population, but ordination suggested four moderately structured populations with high internal relatedness, and moderate to high levels of connectivity. In the ETP, Bayesian inference suggested a Mexican and Central American population, but hierarchical analysis revealed a third subpopulation within Mexico. Ordination revealed nine cryptic clusters across the ETP that primarily corresponded to Mexican and Central American populations but contained individuals from both populations, some from other, distant nesting sites. The subpopulation within Mexico was well-defined after ordination, and all clusters displayed high 10 internal relatedness and moderate genetic differentiation. Bottlenecks were detected in both putative populations, at seven Mexican and two Central American nesting beaches, and in six out of nine inferred clusters, including three out of four Mexican clusters. Bottleneck events may have played some role in cluster differentiation. Migration was significant from Mexico to Central America at multiple levels, but did not necessarily agree with potential migrants elucidated by ordination. Migration was generally lower between ordination-inferred clusters than between nesting sites or Bayesian-inferred clusters. Phylogenetic trees generally supported structuring by ordination, rather than by Bayesian inference. Structuring in ordination not tied to bottleneck events could be due to mating behaviors or patterns of nesting beach colonization dictated by environmental features. In this study, ordination provided a more practical and nuanced framework for defining MUs and DIPs in ETP ORs than did STRUCTURE. This may be due to hierarchical structuring within ETP ORs that may be present in other sea turtle populations and species. In the case of ETP ORs, hierarchical structure may be an artefact of recent population bottlenecks and subsequent recolonization of nesting beaches, or due to mating at foraging grounds or along migratory routes. Bayesian inference may not be the best method for population inference in highly migratory species such as sea turtles, which have a high potential for broad scale genetic connectivity, and therefore may display hierarchical population structuring not easily related to nesting sites. Future studies, and perhaps published studies, should incorporate Bayesian inference and ordination, as well as other measures of population divergence and descriptive statistics, when searching for population structure in highly migratory species such as sea turtles.</div>

La forte hétérogénéité de l'écosystème marin se traduit par une production inégale des ressources sur un large éventail d'échelles spatio-temporelles, qui conditionne par conséquent les déplacements des tortues marines. Considéré comme l’un des plus dynamiques au monde, le plateau des Guyanes est une région très complexe d'un point de vue océanographique et qui héberge trois des sept espèces de tortues marines présentes dans le monde (la tortue olivâtre, la tortue verte et la tortue luth). L'objectif de cette thèse était de comprendre comment les contraintes océanographiques peuvent-elles influencer les déplacements en mer de ces trois espèces. Le déploiement de 55 balises satellites sur des femelles reproductrices en Guyane française a permis de fournir des informations sur leurs trajectoires, sur leur comportement de plongée et sur les caractéristiques de leur environnement. Notre étude a mis en évidence une forte plasticité comportementale interspécifique qui semble être principalement dictée par les traits reproducteurs, les stratégies de reproduction, les conditions locales de l'habitat ou encore les adaptations physiologiques. / The strong heterogeneity of the marine ecosystem leads to a patchy distribution of the resources in time and space, shaping therefore the movements of sea turtles. Considered as the most dynamic ecosystem in the world, the Guiana shield is a highly dynamic system which hosts three of the seven sea turtle species in the world (the olive ridley, the green turtle and the leatherback turtle). The aim of this thesis was to understand how the oceanographic constraints can influence the at-sea movements of these three species during the reproduction and the migration phases. The deployment of 55 satellite tags on adult females in French Guiana provided information on their trajectories, their diving behavior and on the environment encountered. Our study shows a strong behavioral plasticity between species, which seems to be mainly dictated by the reproductive traits and strategies, the local conditions of the habitat and the physiological adaptations.

Factors influencing Kemp's ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys kempii) distribution in nearshore waters and implications for managementMetz, Tasha Lynn 15 November 2004 (has links)
Post-pelagic juvenile and subadult Kemp's ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys kempii) (20-40 cm straight carapace length) utilize nearshore waters of the northwestern Gulf of Mexico as nursery or developmental feeding grounds. This study utilizes 10 years of entanglement netting data to characterize long-term abundance and distribution of Kemp's ridley sea turtles at index habitats in this region. Netting surveys were conducted during April-October 1993-2002, primarily at Sabine Pass, Texas and Calcasieu Pass, Louisiana. Additionally, this study takes an ecosystem-based approach to understanding factors influencing Kemp's ridley in-water abundance and distribution via the development of a conceptual model incorporating data on nesting dynamics, environmental conditions, prey availability, and predation pressure.
Overall monthly mean ridley catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) peaked in the beginning of summer (April-June), probably in response to rising water temperatures and seasonal occurrence of blue crab prey. Annual mean ridley CPUE across all study areas peaked in 1994, 1997, 1999 and 2002, suggesting a 2-3 year cycle in abundance that may be related to patterns in clutch size or hatch success at the Rancho Nuevo, Mexico nesting beach. However, ridley CPUE in nearshore waters remained relatively constant or decreased slightly even as number of hatchlings released from Rancho Nuevo increased exponentially. Annual declines in Texas strandings since 1994 and subsequent increases in Florida counterparts since 1995 suggest a shift in ridley distribution from the western to eastern Gulf in recent years.
Significant declines in ridley CPUE at Sabine Pass since 1997 coincided with a concurrent reduction in blue crab size, but a similar trend was not detected at Calcasieu Pass. Kemp's ridley occurrence at study sites was not significantly related to shrimping activity/by-catch. There also were no biologically significant relationships between Kemp's ridley CPUE and abiotic factors, nor were ridleys deterred from utilizing areas frequented by bull sharks. Overall, nesting dynamics and prey availability were conceptual model components appearing to have the greatest influence on nearshore ridley occurrence.
