Rolling element skew measurement in a spherical roller bearing utilizing a CPD probe

Osorno, Daniel 24 August 2005 (has links)
This thesis incorporates an array of Contact Potential Difference (CPD) sensors to measure and monitor the degree of skew in the rolling elements of a spherical roller bearing. Skewing is the motion of a roller as it turns about an axis normal to the roller race interface. Roller skew is generated as part of the kinematic effects of roller bearings. Skew monitoring is important for bearing design as it is an indirect measure of bearing life. For the purpose of this thesis, roller skew was measured utilizing multiple pairs of CPD probes located around the bearings outer raceway at varying points of the loading zone. These CPD probes are not in direct contact with the rollers, but in close proximity to their surface (through the bearing outer ring). The skew angle measured is related to different operating conditions such as applied load, shaft speed, and lubrication. The pair of CPD probes detected a signal as the roller surface passed by and the phase difference between the two distinct signals measured the skew angles in the range of 0.016 to 1.10. The shaft is rotated both clockwise and counterclockwise to capture any probe misalignment which was in the range of 0.5 up to 2.0 . This thesis also provides a model for the probe signal as a spherical roller surface passes the probe surface.

Technologie výroby plechových klecí pro axiální soudečková ložiska / Technology of thrust bearing steel cages production

Jež, Marek January 2008 (has links)
JEŽ Marek: Technology of thrust bearing steel cages production . Diploma assert of daily magisteral´s studies, study programme – Industry. The branch manufactoring technology, 2 end form, level 2 – summer semester, study group 50 / 51, academical year 2007 / 2008. FSI of Brno University of Technology, department of forming and plastics, May 2008, 78 pages, 54 pictures, 6 supplements. The main theme of the Diploma Theses is the technology of production of tin cages for axial spherical-roller bearings. The given matter includes the production of tin cages for axial spherical-roller bearings – by traction, cutting, punching and calibration. For the chosen representative, i.e. bearing with marking 29 336 M I suggest the substitution of tin cage instead of the brass one. The component (cage) is made of the sheet iron 11 300 of 4 mm thickness, the basic semi product is the sheet panel with the size of 360 x 4 x 3000 mm. In solving the given matter, it is started from the fact that the current state of the cage is still under development. The aim of the Diploma Thesis is to choose the representative, suggest the appropriate technological progress, proposing the engineering design of functional parts of the tool for punching the holes/windows including the necessary calculations and workshop graphical documentation.

Piezoelectric power harvesting from mechanical strain

Spahic, Edin January 2021 (has links)
Piezoelectric power harvesting is a field of active research. Most piezoelectric power harvesters are designed around harvesting energy from vibrations. This thesis is a feasibility study in collaboration with SKF to investigate whether or not a useful amount of power can be extracted from a piezoelectric tube mounted inside the roller of a bearing, based purely on harvesting power from mechanical strain instead of ambient vibrations, with the goal of replacing bulky single-use batteries as the power source for SKF's sensor roller technology. The methodology consisted of constructing and simulating a multiphysics model in COMSOL Multiphysics, and simulations were performed using three sets of parametric studies. Necessary material properties for the middle epoxy layer bonding the roller and piezo tube together were determined, before characterizing the piezoelectric behavior in relation to the magnitude of the applied load and the rotation of the roller. Simulation results indicate that approximately 0.64mW of power can be harvested from a single piezo tube under nominal operation in the test case, which is sufficient to power the sensor roller circuitry. In addition to simply replacing batteries as a power source, the technology opens up possibilites for more widespread adoption of sensor rollers in other applications.

The influence of carbonitriding on hardness, retained austenite and residual stress in 52100 steel

Malmberg, Andreas January 2015 (has links)
High rolling contact fatigue parts are vital for the long service life of fuel pumps. Cummins Fuel Systems are currently using an M2 tool steel for one of the most important roller bearing application in their pumps, namely the cam follower. The future design of the cam follower is a pin-less tappet roller. The wear and fatigue properties of the roller is vital to ensure reliability of the fuel system. M2 tool steel is an expensive material and becomes even more so if diamond like coating (DLC) is needed to decrease the friction coefficients. To cut costs of the fuel pump it might be possible to replace the M2 tool steel with 52100 steel (100Cr6). Competitive methods have proven that carbonitrided 52100 can reach excellent wear and fatigue properties making it a candidate to replace M2 tool steel. How the properties of hardness, toughness and compressive residual stresses are developed in 52100 and how they affect the fatigue and wear resistance has been researched from the literature. A big part of this project was to do an extensive analysis of a roller bearing that was believed to have gone through one of these competitive methods that produce excellent wear and fatigue resistance. The analysis was done with background to the knowledge gathered from the literature. Finally process trials were set up to carbonitride 52100 steel samples. The trials were done to develop a better understanding of how adding carbon together with nitrogen to the surface of 52100 steel will influence the metallurgical parameters that results in good wear and fatigue resistance. From this analysis Cummins hope to create a process recipe that can be used for carbonitriding the cam follower and maybe other components in their fuel systems.

Vliv přesahu na životnost valivého ložiska / Influence of interference fit on Rolling Bearing life

Tetour, Stanislav January 2018 (has links)
Master thesis is focused on the influence of interference fit on rolling bearing life. The first part of thesis deals with the theoretical knowledge, that is necessary for the solution. The influence of interference fit was investigated of inner ring on shaft and outer ring in housing bore for recommended tolerance classes. Interference fit was solved on cylindrical roller bearing and tapered roller bearing. Analytical and numerical approach was used for the solution. A static analysis of bearing was made using program ANSYS Workbench in numerical section. The output of analysis was maximum shear stress under the contact surface, which result is contact fatigue of bearing. Bearing life was determined by life factor, which indicates bearing life with interference fit compared to bearing without interference fit.
