Aesthetic mechanisms of Stalinization in Romanian architecture : the case of Hunedoara, 1947-1954

Marginean, Mara 30 April 2008
While historians have approached the process of popular democracies absorption into the Soviet system at the end of the Second World War by stressing political and economic relations within the decision-making structures, the urban spaces produced during this interval, as sites of social interaction, remained under-researched. In Romania, the project conducted in Hunedoara between 1947 and 1954 illustrates the extent to which the Romanian communist state was aware of the urban spaces potential for social manipulation, as well as the strategies this authority undertook to employ politically the formative function of the built environment. The thesis revolves around three main questions: What did modernization mean for Romanian society by the end of World War II? To what degree did the attempts of Stalinization manage to impose on Romanian society the Soviet Unions cultural values and principles? And how can studying urban architecture tell us more about these topics? Drawing on newspaper and archival materials, the thesis concludes that inside the communist system, the ability to define modernity much less bringing it into being, depended on whether political elites and the party could provide institutional unity and coherent decision-making.

La naissance du mythe nationaliste dans les principautés roumaines pendant la domination ottomane, comme décrit dans La troisième lettre de Mihai Eminescu : l'importance de l'église orthodoxe et le refus de l'Islam

Radulescu, Miruna Catalina January 2002 (has links)
Most Romanian national heroes lived while the Ottoman Empire dominated the Balkans. History bears witness to their doings, yet certain figures have become almost mythical thanks to the powerful impact of the nationalistic literature. / Mihai Eminescu, the Romanian national poet par excellence, whose writings were merely tolerated by the Communists, exerted a strong influence despite his passionate involvement and he managed to create historical confusion lasting for generations. After 1989, Romanian history books changed. In my thesis, I seek to modify the myth of invincible Romanian heroes and to understand the reason why Romanian principalities enjoyed a special treatment during the Ottoman period. / The Romanian principalities served as buffer states, stopping, halting the Ottoman advancement to the north of the Danube on many occasions. The double game often used by Romanian leaders helped Valaquia and Moldavia retain their special status. Also, the treaties of vassalage signed with the Romanians and the power of the Orthodox Church have prevented the Ottomans from imposing their own laws and customs. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Is it Possible to Regulate the Internet Globally?: a Comparative Case Study of the Cybercrime Framework in Canada and Romania.

Manolescu, Dan Stefan Dragos 11 1900 (has links)
In this thesis, I investigate the concept of Internet regulation and its implementation by examining the Convention on Cybercrime, which regulates the European Union (EU) and non EU countries. I examine the approaches taken toward the Convention on Cybercrime in two different socio-economic and political systems: Canada, a modern democracy that only signed the Convention, and Romania, an ex-communist democracy that both signed and ratified it. With this Convention, the Council of Europe has claimed that one model of global Internet regulation is appropriate for all countries. I argue that the infrastructure and legal, economic, and socio-cultural aspects of local cultures make the global homogenous regulation of the Internet impractical, therefore regulation on a national level would be more effective. I also try to contribute to current research by studying the complexity of the global regulation of Internet crimes by demonstrating: the importance of democracy and technology for public policy frameworks for cybercrime, by describing; the limitations of the model represented by the global monolithic Convention on Cybercrime, and by suggesting that a universal democratic model of global Internet regulation is utopian and does not address the individual needs of each country.
