The Church as the New Israel in Romans

Sears, Philip Chase 30 May 2013 (has links)
By following a biblical theological approach, this thesis demonstrates that a theology of the new Israel is woven throughout the book of Romans. Chapter 1 discusses introductory matters relating to the current debate on the relationship between the church and Israel. Chapter 2 explores Paul's designation of Jesus as God's Son, true Israel, through whom the church finds her identity. Chapter 3 focuses on the new creation promises made to Israel which are fulfilled in Christ and experienced in the church. Chapter 4 then examines the titles and imagery of Israel which Paul applies to the church, identifying her as the new Israel. Finally, chapter 5 addresses some implications of this study for the future of ethnic Israel, and concludes by reasserting that the church is the new Israel, God's covenant people and heirs of all his saving promises. / This item is under embargo until 2016-05-31.

La Tène and early Gallo-Roman north-west France

De Jersey, Philip January 1992 (has links)
The basis of this research is the compilation of a gazetteer of sites and finds of the La Tène and early Gallo-Roman periods (c. 475 BC - c. 31 BC) in north-west France. Two aspects of the evidence thus collected are examined in detail: settlement and coinage. For the early La Tène period, burial evidence provides the only significant source of information, and at present it is not of sufficient quality or quantity to do more than shed light on a few specific aspects of regional development. Similarly, the settlement evidence from the later periods is also relatively scarce. However the introduction of coinage in the middle La Tène, probably via mercenaries returning from service in the Greek world, provides a much more substantial body of information on developments between the third and first centuries BC. Following a consideration of the theoretical aspects of coin use and function, all the major types of coinage in north-west France are examined in detail, and a number of problems of attribution and interpretation are discussed. It is apparent from the study of settlement and coinage that several traditional interpretations of aspects of the La Tène and early Gallo-Roman periods in north-west France need to be reassessed, in particular questions concerning the development of oppida, and the function of coinage. In the concluding chapter a model of the development of coinage in the region is suggested, illuminated where possible by the application of settlement evidence. The result demonstrates clearly the extraordinarily cohesive nature of this area, which has been termed "greater Armorica", throughout the later Iron Age and into the Gallo-Roman era.

Christ is God Over All: Romans 9:5 in the Context of Romans 9-11

Carraway, George Warrington 23 May 2012 (has links)
This dissertation examines Paul's statement in Romans 9:5 within the context of Romans 9-11. The thesis of the dissertation is that in the Christological passages in Romans 9-11, Paul spoke of Jesus in a manner that suggests that in Romans 9:5 he meant that Christ is God over all, that is, the God of Israel. In addition, the dissertation argues that the confession that Jesus is God over all is the fundamental confession that must be made by Israel for salvation. Chapter 1 considers the history of the discussion of New Testament Christology during the last century, and suggests that the question of whether any Palestinian Jew could refer to Jesus as God or even as Lord is the proper background against which the discussion of Paul's intent in Romans 9:5 must be undertaken. Chapter 2 undertakes an in-depth exegetical study of the syntax of Romans 9:5 and argues that the syntax is best understood as identifying Jesus as God. Chapter 3 acknowledges and answers objections from outside Romans 9:5 that Paul as a monotheistic Jew would not identify Jesus as God. Similarly, chapter 4 answers objections that Paul would not refer to Jesus as God in Romans 9:5 because he does not so identify Jesus elsewhere. Chapter 5 considers the importance of Paul's identification of Christ as the stone of stumbling and the end of the law in Romans 9:30-10:4, especially for how he understood Jesus. Chapter 6 argues that in Romans 10:5-13, Paul understood Jesus as the referent of the one on whom all call for salvation, assigning to Jesus an Old Testament reference to YHWH as the one who could save. Chapter 7 argues there is no separate way of salvation for Israel and that Jesus is YHWH, the redeemer from Zion, which Israel must join Gentiles in recognizing. / This item is under embargo until 2013-05-23
