The purpose of this study is to find evidence that will show whether or not there is a need for a school housing program in the small rural school districts in San Joaquin County, California. The study is justified by a comparison of the present conditions of the schools to a set of standards for good schoolhouse construction which have been established by noted authorities and educators in the field.

To give an accurate picture of today's schools in Grady County it is necessary to look at the history of Grady County schools. Much of this history parallels contemporaneous developments over the nation and the South, but attention is to be focused on this part of South Georgia which is now Grady County. "In providing adequate school housing it has been found that many problems arise which are varied and complicated. Due to the great increase in population in Escambia County in the past decade, these problems have been magnified. In this study we shall attempt to present the solution to some of these problems as they have been worked out by the local educational leaders, the Board of Public Instruction, and the State Department of Education personnel.
