Personalising information security education

Talib, Shuhaili January 2014 (has links)
Whilst technological solutions go a long way in providing protection for users online, it has been long understood that the individual also plays a pivotal role. Even with the best of protection, an ill-informed person can effectively remove any protection the control might provide. Information security awareness is therefore imperative to ensure a population is well educated with respect to the threats that exist to one’s electronic information, and how to better protect oneself. Current information security awareness strategies are arguably lacking in their ability to provide a robust and personalised approach to educating users, opting for a blanket, one-size-fits-all solution. This research focuses upon achieving a better understanding of the information security awareness domain; appreciating the requirements such a system would need; and importantly, drawing upon established learning paradigms in seeking to design an effective personalised information security education. A survey was undertaken to better understand how people currently learn about information security. It focussed primarily upon employees of organisations, but also examined the relationship between work and home environments and security practice. The survey also focussed upon understanding how people learn and their preferences for styles of learning. The results established that some good work was being undertaken by organisations in terms of security awareness, and that respondents benefited from such training – both in their workplace and also at home – with a positive relationship between learning at the workplace and practise at home. The survey highlighted one key aspect for both the training provided and the respondents’ preference for learning styles. It varies. It is also clear, that it was difficult to establish the effectiveness of such training and the impact upon practice. The research, after establishing experimentally that personalised learning was a viable approach, proceeded to develop a model for information security awareness that utilised the already successful field of pedagogy and individualised learning. The resulting novel framework “Personalising Information Security Education (PISE)” is proposed. The framework is a holistic approach to solving the problem of information security awareness that can be applied both in the workplace environment and as a tool for the general public. It does not focus upon what is taught, but rather, puts into place the processes to enable an individual to develop their own information security personalised learning plan and to measure their progress through the learning experience.

Sekuritizace vzdělávání v současné Evropě / Securitization of education in contemporary Europe

Lehutová, Kristína January 2019 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to analyze the current state of policies proposed to address the issue of radicalization in Europe. More specifically, the thesis deals with the topic of the fight against radicalization through education. The paper highlights how security debate in Europe is changing the understanding of educational institutions and their role in anti-radicalization policies. In the past, states in Europe had to deal with various forms of violence caused by either separatist movements or other radical and extremist ideologies. Unfortunately, the problem of the occasional outbreak of violence has not been resolved yet in Europe. In relation to the theme of radicalization, the role of educational institutions is perceived as significant to counter the process. They are considered to be the main institutions able to support the social inclusion and critical thinking of students during the globalization and modernization of Internet technologies. For these reasons, educational institutions should be responsible for protecting European students and pupils and preventing them from being drawn to extremism. This work, however, points out that this understanding is not the only way promoted by governments to tackle radicalization through the sector of education. The role of educational...

Comparing Training Methodologies on Employee’s Cybersecurity Countermeasures Awareness and Skills in Traditional vs. Socio-Technical Programs

Goode, Jodi 01 January 2018 (has links)
Organizations, which have established an effective technical layer of security, continue to experience difficulties triggered by cyber threats. Ultimately, the cybersecurity posture of an organization depends on appropriate actions taken by employees whose naive cybersecurity practices have been found to represent 72% to 95% of cybersecurity threats and vulnerabilities to organizations. However, employees cannot be held responsible for cybersecurity practices if they are not provided the education and training to acquire skills, which allow for identification of security threats along with the proper course of action to mitigate such threats. In addition, awareness of the importance of cybersecurity, the responsibility of protecting organizational data, as well as of emerging cybersecurity threats is quickly becoming essential as the threat landscape increases in sophistication at an alarming rate. Security education, training, and awareness (SETA) programs can be used to empower employees, who are often cited as the weakest link in information systems (IS) security due to limited knowledge and lacking skillsets. Quality SETA programs not only focus on raising employee awareness of responsibilities in relation to their organizations’ information assets but also train on the consequences of abuse while providing the necessary skills to help fulfill these requirements. The main goal of this research study was to empirically assess if there are any significant differences on employees’ cybersecurity countermeasures awareness (CCA) and cybersecurity skills (CyS) based on the use of two SETA program types (typical & socio-technical) and two SETA delivery methods (face-to-face & online). This study included a mixed method approach combining an expert panel, developmental research, and quantitative data collection. A panel of subject matter experts (SMEs) reviewed the proposed SETA program topics and measurement criteria for CCA per the Delphi methodology. The SMEs’ responses were incorporated into the development of two SETA program types with integrated vignette-based assessment of CCA and CyS, which were delivered via two methods. Vignette-based assessment provided a nonintrusive way of measurement in a pre- and post-assessment format. Once the programs had been reviewed by the SMEs to ensure validity and reliability, per the Delphi methodology, randomly assigned participants were asked to complete the pre-assessment, the SETA program, and then the post-assessment providing for the qualitative phase of the study. Data collected was analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to address the proposed research hypothesis. Recommendations for SETA program type and delivery method as a result of data analysis are provided.

Biological Security Education Handbook: The Power of Team-Based Learning.

Novossiolova, Tatyana 01 1900 (has links)
yes / Introduction Combining Contents with Strategy: A Case for Team-Based Learning. The term "biosecurity‟ has been used in many different contexts for many different purposes. The present Handbook uses the concept of "biosecurity‟ (or biological security) to mean successful minimising of the risks that the biological sciences will be deliberately or accidentally misused in a way which causes harm for humans, animals, plants or the environment, including through awareness and understanding of the risks. Biosecurity thus involves a complex and rapidly evolving set of issues that concern a broad range of stakeholders: policy makers, legislators, industry, academia, the security community, science educators, life science students and practitioners, and the general public.1 Addressing those issues requires continuous cooperation among all concerned parties, that is, biosecurity awareness is a responsibility incumbent upon all. The need for fostering awareness of biological security among those engaged in the life sciences has been widely acknowledged in various fora and, as a result, over the past few years a number of important initiatives have been carried out, designed to further education about the broader social, ethical, security and legal implications of cutting-edge biotechnology.2 The chief objective of the present Handbook is to complement those efforts by combining teaching material in biological security with an active learning training approach – Team-Based Learning (TBL) – to empower educators, students and practitioners as they begin to engage with biological security. The Handbook seeks to supplement the Guide "Preventing Biological Threats: What You Can Do‟ by providing its users with tips and insights into how to implement its content in different educational settings. Part 5 of the Guide introduces the reader to the value of active learning in the context of biosecurity education and training. Chapter 20 in particular details the implementation of the TBL format at an interactive biosecurity seminar and the results achieved by the seminar participants. Consequently, the Handbook aims to: i. Highlight the strengths of the TBL format in teaching biological security. ii. Provide practical guidance on how to organise, run, and facilitate TBL biosecurity seminars. iii. Offer sample sets of exercises based on the individual chapters of the Guide. iv. Explain how each set of exercises can be used for achieving specific learning objectives. Each chapter of the Handbook introduces the reader to a key concept discussed in the respective chapter of the Guide and elaborates on the specific learning objectives, which the TBL exercises are aimed at. Each set comprises Individual and Team Readiness Assurance Test questions, and Application Exercises in the form of multiple-choice problem-solving tasks and practical scenarios (see below). A growing body of evidence suggests that the use of active learning approaches to teaching and training can significantly enhance the effectiveness of education programmes.3 Part of the reason behind this trend is the fact that active learning strategies aid the learner in „unlocking‟ their existing knowledge and linking new subject matter to their established conceptual framework.4 In other words, through case studies, scenarios, problem-solving games, role plays, and simulations – to name few examples of active learning methods – learners are prompted to think critically, reflect and develop understanding of unfamiliar concepts. Active learning approaches allow fostering a learner-centred environment where the learner rather than the instructor is at the centre of the activities taking place in the classroom.5 The Handbook focuses on a specific format of active learning instruction – Team Based Learning (TBL). This is a special form of collaborative learning which uses a specific sequence of individual work, group work, and immediate feedback to create a motivational framework, whereby the focus is shifted from conveying concepts by the instructor to the application of concepts by student teams.6 TBL is an easy-to-replicate, user-friendly approach, that can be applied in many different educational settings at various stages of instruction, and for different purposes. It enables the instructor to cover new material in a way that engages learners as active participants, allowing them to take ownership of their own learning, and develop reflection and self-evaluation skills.

Educação financeira : uma metodologia de pesquisa amostral para aferição de indicadores em fundos de pensão

Zemiacki, Juscelino January 2015 (has links)
The intrinsic relation between financial literacy and social security education, more specifically by the interaction of these two as a determinant factor in the well-being of the individual in post-labor phase makes financial education a tool in major spread of social security culture. On a national level, before social security bodies initiatives as PREVIC, we established the importance of actions and financial education programs in the Complementary Pension Entities, surging demand to understand, measure and monitor the level of financial education of the public of Brazilian pension funds. This research aimed to propose and implement a methodology for primary data collection, aimed at obtaining indicators and calculating a general index of financial education, which reflect the financial literacy level of the analyzed public. / Disserta??o (Mestrado Profissional) ? Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Tecnologia, Sa?de e Sociedade, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2017. / The Social Security Education Program (PEP) was created with the purpose of informing and making society aware of its rights and duties in relation to Social Security and the means of exercising them, in order to ensure social protection for citizens through their inclusion And permanence in the General Regime of Social Security. However, what is still observed is the occurrence of a large number of refusals in the requests related to benefits with the INSS. The objective of this study was to analyze and reflect on the Social Security Education Program (PEP), using as parameters the number of attendances and the indices of denial of social security benefits, required by the rural worker, a special insured, raising the reasons for Of these proceedings. With a more effective action, a guiding booklet containing the basic documents for requesting benefits was elaborated, complementary documents proving the activity of rural workers, as well as the access channels and partner entities. As a reflection, this public policy was discussed based on the offer of several social security benefits and its reflexes to guarantee the income of the rural population. It also analyzed the implications for the promotion of citizenship and the concepts that frame the recognition of rights to benefits focused on the rural worker. It was observed that over a period of approximately six years, 18,694 applications were rejected considering only the rural - special insured public, of the region that covers the Management of Te?filo Otoni, which reflected in an amount of more than 466.6 million Of real that stopped entering the local economy. It was noticeable that, even with the PEP, the lack of information constitutes a major bottleneck for the granting of social security benefits, resulting in the denial of the requirements. Thus, it is expected that the booklet may contribute to reducing the number of refusals, strengthening the regional economy, recognition by the rural public that Brazilian public welfare is their heritage, and, finally, recognition of rights that were previously Being harmed.
