Three Essays on Information Security Risk Management

Today's environment is filled with the proliferation of cyber-attacks that result in losses for organizations and individuals. Hackers often use compromised websites to distribute malware, making it difficult for individuals to detect. The impact of clicking through a link on the Internet that is malware infected can result in consequences such as private information theft and identity theft. Hackers are also known to perpetrate cyber-attacks that result in organizational security breaches that adversely affect organizations' finances, reputation, and market value. Risk management approaches for minimizing and recovering from cyber-attack losses and preventing further cyber-attacks are gaining more importance. Many studies exist that have increased our understanding of how individuals and organizations are motivated to reduce or avoid the risks of security breaches and cyber-attacks using safeguard mechanisms. The safeguards are sometimes technical in nature, such as intrusion detection software and anti-virus software. Other times, the safeguards are procedural in nature such as security policy adherence and security awareness and training. Many of these safeguards fall under the risk mitigation and risk avoidance aspects of risk management, and do not address other aspects of risk management, such as risk transfer. Researchers have argued that technological approaches to security risks are rarely sufficient for providing an overall protection of information system assets. Moreover, others argue that an overall protection must include a risk transfer strategy. Hence, there is a need to understand the risk transfer approach for managing information security risks. Further, in order to effectively address the information security puzzle, there also needs to be an understanding of the nature of the perpetrators of the problem – the hackers. Though hacker incidents proliferate the news, there are few theory based hacker studies. Even though the very nature of their actions presents a difficulty in their accessibility to research, a glimpse of how hackers perpetrate attacks can be obtained through the examination of their knowledge sharing behavior. Gaining some understanding about hackers through their knowledge sharing behavior may help researchers fine-tune future information security research. The insights could also help practitioners design more effective defensive security strategies and risk management efforts aimed at protecting information systems. Hence, this dissertation is interested in understanding the hackers that perpetrate cyber-attacks on individuals and organizations through their knowledge sharing behavior. Then, of interest also is how individuals form their URL click-through intention in the face of proliferated cyber risks. Finally, we explore how and why organizations that are faced with the risk of security breaches, commit to cyberinsurance as a risk management strategy. Thus, the fundamental research question of this dissertation is: how do individuals and organizations manage information security risks?

A framework for higher academic institutions in the republic of South Africa to mitigate network security threats and attacks.

These institutions have introduced several educational benefits such as the use of digital libraries, cluster computing, and support for distance learning. As a result, the use of networking technologies has improved the ability of students to acquire knowledge, thereby providing a supportive environment for teaching and learning. However, academic networks are constantly being attacked by viruses, worms, and the intent of malicious users to compromise perceived secured systems. Network security threats and cyber-attacks are significant challenges faced by higher academic institutions that may cause a negative impact on systems and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) resources. For example, the infiltration of viruses and worms into academic networks can destroy or corrupt data and by causing excessive network traffic, massive delays may be experienced. This weakens the ability of the institution to function properly, and results in prolonged downtime and the unavailability of Information Technology (IT) services. This research determines challenges faced by higher academic institutions, identifies the type of security measures used at higher academic institutions, and how network security could be addressed and improved to protect against network security threats and attacks. Two research approaches were adopted, namely a survey and an experiment. Survey questionnaires were distributed to IT technical staff at higher academic institutions in Gauteng province to determine the challenges they face in terms of securing their networks. It is crucial that network security takes on a prominent role when managing higher academic institutions‘ networks. The results of the study reveal several challenges such as budget constraints, inadequate security measures, lack of enforcing network security policies, and lack of penetration testing on systems and the network. The results also reveal that the implementation of security measures can and does address network security threats and attacks. It is therefore extremely important for higher academic institutions to implement proper security measures to help mitigate network security threats and attacks. The framework proposed is based on the results from the research study to help mitigate network security threats and attacks at higher academic institutions.

Aanbevelings vir die ontwerp van sekuriteit by die beplanning van enige besigheidskompleks is ook gedoen. Daar kan egter nog baie navorsing in hierdie ontwikkelende gebied van misdaadvoorkoming gedoen word en voorstelle vir moontlike toekomstige navorsing is gemaak. Centurion Centre was chosen as a study case because it has an open plan design. This has the effect that some parts of the centre cannot be closed at night. Centurion Centre was described in terms of the defensible space mechanisms. A crime prevention model was drawn up for Centurion Centre and recommendations were made regarding the security of future designs for business complexes. This field of study and approach to crime prevention is, however, very new in South Africa and suggestions for more research have been made. The role of trade usage and the allocation of risk for unauthorized transactions in internet banking : a re-evaluation of the traditional bank-customer relationship

The Internet has had and will continue to have a major impact in the way in which banking business is conducted. This dissertation primarily considers the allocation of risks associated with Internet banking and in doing so considers the role of trade usage in Internet banking. The question of what the Internet is and more specifically what constitutes Internet banking is addressed. In order to have an understanding of the allocation of risks in Internet banking a good understanding of the traditional bank-customer relationship is necessary. The contractual basis for this relationship is discussed. The duties of the bank and the customer are discussed. In this regard the duty of a bank to act in terms of its customers mandate, the banks duty of confidentiality and the customers duty to exercise reasonable care are considered. The concept of a customer is briefly discussed. As trade usage plays a significant role in the contract between the bank and its customer, attention is given to the requirement for the recognition of a trade usage generally and more particularly in South Africa. The effect of Internet banking on the traditional bank-customer relationship is considered. The fact that a bank is still required to act in terms of its customer's mandate but is unable to identify is examined. As most Internet banking contracts impose an obligation on the customer to take security precautions and also limit the liability of banks, consideration is finally given to the possibility that the practices of banks in regard to Internet banking may have acquired the status of trade usage in this particular sphere of banking. / LL.M. Practical privacy and security for opportunistic networks

When in physical proximity, data can be directly exchanged between the mobile devices people carry - for example over Bluetooth. If people cooperate to store, carry and forward messages on one another's behalf, then an opportunistic network may be formed, independent of any fixed infrastructure. To enable performant routing within opportunistic networks, use of social network information has been proposed for social network routing protocols. But the decentralised and cooperative nature of the networks can however expose users of such protocols to privacy and security threats, which may in turn discourage participation in the network. In this thesis, we examine how to mitigate privacy and security threats in opportunistic networks while maintaining network performance. We first demonstrate that privacy-aware routing protocols are required in order to maintain network performance while respecting users' privacy preferences. We then demonstrate novel social network routing protocols that mitigate specific threats to privacy and security while maintaining network performance.

Governance of virtual private networks using COBIT as framework

The assignment focuses on whether the framework can ensure the identification of virtual private network-related risks and address IT compliance with policies and statutory regulations. A brief summary of the risks and issues pertaining to the pre-implementation, implementation and post-implementation phases of virtual private networks is included in the assignment. These risks and issues are then individually mapped onto a relevant COBIT control objective. The scope of the assignment does not include the intricacies of how these networks operate, the different types of network topologies or the different technologies used in virtual private networks. It was found that the COBIT framework can be implemented to manage and/or mitigate virtual private network risks.

The right to privacy : how the proposed POPI Bill will impact data security in a cloud computing environment

Thesis (MComm)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The growing popularity and continuing development of cloud computing services is ever evolving and is slowly being integrated into our daily lives through our interactions with electronic devices. Cloud Computing has been heralded as the solution for enterprises to reduce information technology infrastructure cost by buying cloud services as a utility. While this premise is generally correct, in certain industries for example banking, the sensitive nature of the information submitted to the cloud for storage or processing places information security responsibilities on the party using the cloud services as well as the party providing them. Problems associated with cloud computing are loss of control, lack of trust between the contracting parties in the cloud relationship (customer and cloud service provider) and segregating data securely in the virtual environment. The risk and responsibilities associated with data loss was previously mainly reputational in nature but with the promulgation and signing by the South African Parliament of the Protection of Personal Information Bill (POPI) in August 2013 these responsibilities to protect information are in the process to be legislated in South Africa. The impact of the new legislation on the cloud computing environment needs to be investigated as the requirements imposed by the Bill might render the use of cloud computing in regard to sensitive data nonviable without replacing some of the IT infrastructure cost benefits that cloud computing allows with increased data security costs. In order to investigate the impact of the new POPI legislation on cloud computing, the components and characteristics of the cloud will be studied and differentiated from other forms of computing. The characteristics of cloud computing are the unique identifiers that differentiate it from Grid and Cluster computing. The component study is focused on the service and deployment models that can be associated with cloud computing. The understanding obtained will be used to compile a new definition of cloud computing. By utilizing the cloud definition of what components and processes constitute cloud computing the different types of data security processes and technical security measures can be implemented are studied. This will include information management and governance policies as well as technical security measures such as encryption and virtualisation security. The last part of the study will be focussed on the Bill and the legislated requirements and how these can be complied with using the security processes identified in the rest of the study. The new legislation still has to be signed by the State President after which businesses will have one year to comply and due to the short grace period businesses need to align their business practices with the proposed requirements. The impact is wide ranging from implementing technical information security processes to possible re-drafting of service level agreements with business partners that share sensitive information. The study will highlight the major areas where the Bill will impact businesses as well as identifying possible solutions that could be implemented by cloud computing users when storing or processing data in the cloud. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die groei in gewildheid en die ontwikkeling van wolkbewerking dienste is besig om te verander en is stadig besig om in ons daaglikse lewens geintegreer te word deur ons interaksie met elektroniese toestelle. Die laaste deel van die studie sal fokus op die BVPI wetgewing en die vereistes en hoe om daaraan te voldoen deur die sekuritiets maatreëls geidentifiseer in die res van die studie te implimenteer. Die nuwe wetgewing moet nog deur die Staats President onderteken word waarna besighede ‘n jaar sal he om aan die vereistes te voldoen en omdat die periode so kort is moet besighede hulself voorberei en besigheid prosesse aanpas. Die impak van die wetgewing strek baie wyd en beinvloed van tegnise inligtings beveiligings prosesse tot kontrakte aangaande diens lewering wat dalk oor opgestel moet word tussen partye wat sensitiewe inligting uitruil. Die studie sal die prominente areas van impak uitlig asook die moontlike oplossings wat gebruik kan word deur partye wat wolkbewerking gebruik om inligting te stoor of te bewerk.
