Self-actualizing and acculturation amongst black personnel practitionersSmit, Hendrina Sophia 06 1900 (has links)
Text in English, summary in English and Afrikaans / Acculturation refers to a culture change as a result of continuous and firsthand
contact between the minority culture and the majority culture.
Through urbanization, the black person is exposed to the Western culture by
means of integrated workplaces, schools and neighborhoods. During the
acculturation process, distinct changes occur within the individual on
interpersonal and intrapersonal levels. Self-actualization is a familiar
concept in the Humanistic paradigm and refers to the notion of living to
one's full potential in order to become the kind of individual one wants to
be. This research aims to investigate the impact of acculturation on the
level of self-actualization of black personnel practitioners.
A sample of 218 black personnel practitioners was used, consisting of an
equal number living in urban and rural areas.
The results of this introductory study indicated that urbanized black personnel practitioners show a higher level of self-actualization than
respondents residing in rural areas. / Akkulturasie verwys na 'n kultuurverandering as 'n uitvloeisel van

Women's journeys of transformation through self-other relationships : a phenomenological-hermeneutics investigationNowacka, K. Janine, University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Education January 2010 (has links)
In contemporary transpersonal theory, women‟s experiences of transformation have largely been overlooked. This study seeks to answer the question, what are women‟s lived experiences of the path of transformation through self-other relationships? In setting the stage for the study, the researcher identifies two transpersonal theorists, Wilber and Almaas, and describes their models of consciousness development. She then outlines the feminist critique of existing psychological literature and the need for exclusively female research. Following is an inclusion of themes that have been extracted from the existing literature, themes which represent the biases of the researcher in what she expected to encounter in the current research. Further is a description of existentialism and the role it plays in inviting women to embark on a journey of transformation. The methods employed by the researcher were qualitative phenomenological-hermeneutics. Seven females participated in a three-stage interview process, whereby information was gathered via interviews, then further transcribed and interpreted. This information was then synthesized and presented in a thematic analysis where women‟s experiences were categorized into four separate stages. Finally, the sub-themes of each stage were compared to the stages of development as illustrated by Wilber and Almaas. Ultimately it is concluded that women‟s experiences are highlighted by the relational nature of self-development, and the cyclical process of the journey itself. / ix, 218 leaves ; 29 cm

Self-Disclosure and Self-Actualization as Predictors of LoveBissett, David Woody 12 1900 (has links)
Maslow (1956) suggested that self-actualization in an important determinant of the type of love experienced in heterosexual relationships. Recent work has suggested that the self-actualization of each member of a couple may also be important in determining the level of self-disclosure intimacy which occurs in the couple, and also that self-disclosure itself is an important determinant of interpersonal attraction. The present study employed the technique of path analysis (Wright, 1960) to determine 1) the direct and indirect contribution of each partner's self-actualization to his experience of five love components identified by Critelli, Myers, Ellington, and Bissett (1981), 2) the contribution of each partner's self-actualization to his self-disclosure intimacy, and 3) the contribution of the partner's self-disclosure intimacy to their experience of the five love components.

Effects of the EPI-C Model upon Self-Actualization of Clients in Group CounselingKyle, Judy Knapp 08 1900 (has links)
The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of the evaluation of the effectiveness of the EPI-C model as a guide to group counseling. The purposes of the study are (1) to determine whether group counseling employing the EPI-C model results in positive gain in self-actualization, and (Z) whether group counseling using the EPI-C model is more effective than a topical discussion group or no treatment at all in producing greater positive change in subject self-actualization. This report concludes that the EPI-C model as a guide to group counseling is effective as a means of increasing reliance on inner support, increasing ascendance levels, emotional stability, and objectivity. The model also produced changes in assessed congruence of the emotional, physical and intellectual self. It demonstrated that the EPI-C model facilitated the growth of individuals on certain dimensions of self -actualization.

Die studie van biologie as vak en die ontwikkeling van menspotensiaal.11 February 2009 (has links)
D.Phil. / Education in South Africa is currently in a process of transformation. The transformation is aimed at facilitating equal opportunities for all learners. All educational institutions are primarily involved in the realisation of the human potential of each and every prospective citizen of this diverse country. This research was conducted with the ultimate aim of determining whether Biology as subject could unlock processes of thought in learners, resulting in the development of certain essential skills. The attainment of these mentioned skills might contribute to the optimal cultivation of human potential. A comprehensive study, in which relevant literature was scrutinised, was conducted in order to explore concepts concerning the field of human potential, as well as aspects concerning the discipline of Biology as subject. Qualitative- and quantitative research methods were used. The qualitative research entailed interviews with a focus group. For the purpose of the comparative study, a questionnaire was developed. This represented the quantitative component of the research. The questionnaire was designed to determine to what extent skills of grade 12 Biology learners were developed regarding the following domains: • Cognitive- and psychomotor domains • Affective- and ethical-normative domains • Social domain The results obtained from the empirical study indicated significant statistical differences concerning the extent of skills development in learners studying Biology as opposed to learners not studying Biology as a subject. It can be concluded that the extent of the development of cognitive-, psychomotor-, ethical-normative- and affective skills of Biology learners statistically exceeds those of the non-Biology learners. The extent of development of skills regarding the social domain did not reflect statistically significant differences between the two groups. Regarding the development of additional essential skills, the Biology learners selected Biology in particular as the specific subject contributing extensively towards the development of these additional skills. Post-hoc statistical analysis indicated disparities regarding schools with different languages of instruction. The extent of development of skills of Biology learners attending schools with Afrikaans as medium of instruction significantly exceeds the level of development of learners attending English schools. Results of this research confirm the fact that Biology as subject develops skills in learners across a broad spectrum of domains. With the proposed implementing of the 2006 Further Education and Training (FET)-Curriculum it is imperative that the training of teachers, teaching methods, the positioning of Biology/Life Sciences in the curriculum and the selection of curriculum content are amongst the important issues which have to be addressed. In conclusion it can be stated that, according to the judgement of the learners, Biology as a subject develops an exceptional range of skills and thus contributes to cultivating essential aspects of human potential. The skilful and effective application of the subject Biology can enhance self-discovery in learners and aid them in fostering positive prospects concerning their future.

Positive Biotechnology: Homo Positivus and Self-Actualization in the Age of TechnologyHirsch, Jameson K. 01 January 2018 (has links)
With the rise of modern humanism and its psychological progeny, humanistic psychology, an emphasis on self-actualization has been de rigueur across many fields of scientific exploration. In the last several decades, Positive Psychology, with its focus on eudamonia, or the factors contributing to a meaningful and fulfilling life, has assumed responsibility for propagating this line of thought. Indeed, it might be argued that positive psychology, as a modern philosophy of human aspiration, has permeated a broader range of techno-scientific pursuits than similar, past ideological stances, spawning a sub-culture of positive, yet sometimes anti-positivistic, endeavors.
With cult-like status, positive psychological principles have been applied toward exploring mental (e.g., positive suicidology; positive psychiatry) and physical health (e.g., positive health psychology), understanding the brain (e.g., positive neuropsychology), and enhancing the outcome quality of human-technology interactions (e.g., positive computing; positive technology). Yet, criticisms of the evolution of homo positivus abound; for example, a singular focus on positive emotionality, a componential rather than wholistic perspective, a positivist-scientism emphasis, and adherence to Eurocentric cultural perspectives, are among the issues debated. Possibilities available to humankind. This warrants the question, as we move toward greater integration of man and machine.
Can, and should, the growth-focused and resiliency-promoting tenets of positive psychology be applied to biotechnology, or will our Übermensch strivings have unintended consequences, such as biotechnological enhancements that allow transcendence of the existential concerns defining our humanity? A post-modern “Positive Biotechnology” paradigm is proposed, which integrates the evolving perspectives of Positive Psychology 2.0 and the rapidly-emerging transhuman biotechnological possibilities available to humankind.
