Re-Conceptualizing the Organizing Circumstance of Learning

Spear Ellinwood, Karen Courtenay January 2011 (has links)
This study explores the web-navigation practices of adult learners in higher education and re-conceptualizes the concept of the organizing circumstance of self-managed learning, originated by Spear and Mocker (1984). The theoretical framework draws on funds of knowledge theory from a cultural historical perspective and elaborates a Vygotskian concepts of learning and development by introducing the notion of the distal object and the zone of distal development. The study employed a mixed methods design with an embedded multiple-case study involving half of the twelve participants using a new technology for self-managed learning called Zonebee. Zonebee recorded participants' web navigation, known as Zonebee Trails, providing quantitative data for analysis. Surveys were administered, namely the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (Schraw&Dennison, 1994), the Index of Learning Styles Inventory (Soloman&Felder, 1986), a survey of technology use (created for this study) and a set of demographic questions. Eleven of the twelve participants also provided interviews in which they described their self-managed learning practices.Findings contradicted the premise in the literature that the learning environment fortuitously determines the learning experience. Participants primarily relied on the internet and computer to manage their learning and made deliberate choices about which tools to use depending upon the purpose of the constituent process of self-managed learning in which they were engaged (assessing, planning, implementing, monitoring, evaluating or producing). Zonebee Trails evidenced participants' engagement in considerable planning before generating focused queries to locate specific materials. Thus, this study suggests that the organizing circumstance operates, not through happenstance alone, but through the confluence of four factors influencing the direction the learner takes: funds of knowledge for learning; learning demands (proximity of the learning object, proximal or distal), conditions for learning (affordances for and constraints on learning); and motivation or purpose of activity. The re-conceptualized organizing circumstance of learning, then, offers a methodological and theoretical way to redefine context and understand how learners manage their own learning.

Processo produtivo de esquadrias em madeira de eucalipto na marcenaria coletiva do Assentamento Rural Pirituba II - Itapeva-SP / Production of eucalyptus timber windows in a rural settlement called Pirituba II - Itapeva-SP

Laverde, Albenise 07 December 2007 (has links)
The objective of this work is to analyze the production chain of windows from its acquisition until the final assembly keeping in mind to identify the potentialities and the limits of its manufacture in a differentiated context: using work power in qualification phase, minimum infrastructure and raw material wich most of them came from not managed for saw forests. The data had been collected from the accompaniment and direct comment of the activities carried through in a collective self-managed joinery in a rural settlement called Pirituba II, during the Inovarural experience. The research method used was the research-action. The squadron\'s production by Eucalyptus wood under these conditions revealed viable under the aspects economic, social and technic. The raw material performance shows the lack of offers of better quality wooden in the region and the necessity of the magnifying the managed areas for this purpose. Although the difficulties that was found, were possible to manufacture a component of high quality accessible to the low income population, being reached the expectations and satisfaction of the involved families. Another result of extreme relevance was the formation of a group fixed and enabled to the continuity of the activities of incubation of the enterprise changedding itself into the real possibility of generation of work and local income.

Análise da viabilidade técnica e econômica da produção de janelas de madeira de eucalipto em uma marcenaria coletiva autogestionária para projetos de habitação social rural / Analysis of technical and economical viability of the sawed Eucalyptus window production in a collective self-managed joinery for rural social housing projects

Leite, Thaisa Marques 12 August 2009 (has links)
The multiple uses of reforestation wood can create possibilities for the increasing Brazilian housing deficit, with the wooden components production, in special windows, to rural social housing, which these components attend to the necessities of the final users, with quality and accessible costs. Therefore, the objective of this present research is to analyze the technical and economical viability of the sawed eucalyptus window production, in scale, in a collective self managed joinery, with the perspective to attend the rural social housing projects. The empirical objects of this research are the joinery Madeirarte, located in the Rural Settlement Pirituba II (Itapeva-SP) and the Rural Settlement Sepé Tiaraju (Serra Azul-SP), with the demand of 462 sawed eucalyptus windows. The research strategy adopted is the study case with the methodical support of research-action. The data had been collected from documents and registers, as well as, interviews with the actors, the direct and participant observation of the wooden windows production in the joinery Madeirarte. Taking basis of the general and specific literature of the subject, as well as, the data collected during the wooden windows production, the obtained products was the analysis of the raw material availability proceeding from wood reforestation next to the joinery; analysis of the wood lots acquired for the production in scale; analysis of the productive process of jambs and leaves, considering the infrastructure and existent machines; the technical service of the joinery and each stage of the productive process; analysis of the wooden windows costs appropriation. The result of the wooden reforestation windows production, in scale, in the context of the collective self managed joinery, was the appearance of some difficulties in the productive process that caused retards in the schedule production and, moreover, the wooden windows costs were not adjusted to the stipulated value for windows, by the budget of housing construction in the Rural Settlement Sepé Tiaraju. Although the research have not confirmed the viability of the wooden windows production for the Rural Settlement Sepé Tiaraju, it is important because increases the relative studies about the subject, thus generating a data base, informing problems and solutions found, during the productive process, that allows other experiences of sawed eucalyptus windows production, for social housing projects.

For this, we analyze a project to build housing, through a system of self-management in a neighborhood of Recife, triggered by the action of a movement for urban reform and housing, the Movimento de Lutas nos Bairros, Vilas e Favelas (MLB), through inserting the same in current public policy to encourage self-management, institutionally triggered, the Federal sphere, in mid-2006. For the elaboration of this thesis, the method of analysis was based on both theoretical, through literature and empirical field from the spot monitoring of the evolution of the project, beyond the collection and systematization of interviews of residents , the MLB leaders and representatives of government agencies. From these mechanisms, we try to explain the main barriers and paradigms unfeasible that the full realization of the aspirations of families, organized by the movement, the conquest of their homes.

Influencing Change : Organizational Change and the Implementation of Self-Managing Teams

Bergman, Amanda, Mashouri, Mastaneh January 2017 (has links)
Organizational changes are inevitable, yet up to 70% fail. Technological development and competition in a volatile environment require more flexible organizations. As such, implementing self-managed teams (SMTs) has become a more common approach. The fact that SMTs ought to be self-managed has further raised a debate, since it is argued that some form of manager still is required. Therefore, the following research question was proposed; How does the interplay of influences unfold between the manager and the organizational context when implementing SMTs? The purpose of the study is to increase the understanding of how different activities, events and actions during a change process of implementing SMTs influence the manager, as well as how the manager influences the change process of implementing SMTs. The research was conducted by a qualitative, abductive approach based on a case study. The results show that managers influence perceived history of change, control and the SMTs. Managers are influenced by perceived history of change, employee commitment to change, control, and by the SMT. These influences determine how the manager is influenced by, and how the manager influences the organizational change towards the implementation of SMTs.

The Self-Managed Work Team Environment: Perceptions of Men and Women

Martins-Crane, Lolin 08 1900 (has links)
The present study empirically examined working behaviors of men and women within a self-managed working environment. Three models of women and work were studied. Results indicated women exhibited higher levels of job meaning and continuance commitment. The more self-managed production team exhibited higher levels of growth need strength, support from co-workers, continuance commitment, task significance and lower levels of role conflicts. Support teams exhibited higher levels of autonomy and satisfaction with pay. Path analysis, testing a model based on Astin's sociopsychological model indicated direct effects from expectancy to general satisfaction, from gender to expectancy, and task significance to gender. An alternative model showed direct effects between general satisfaction and expectancy, satisfaction with pay, task significance and expectancies, and between satisfaction with pay and teams.

Relationship Between Employee Age and Perceptions of Work in Self-Managed Work Groups

Miller, Carolyn 08 1900 (has links)
Derived from sociotechnical systems theory, autonomous or self-managed work groups are a form of work design in which employees are multi-skilled, take responsibility for the group's tasks, and have discretion over the decisions which impact group performance. Previously collected survey data from 602 employees of a southwestern manufacturing firm were examined via factor analyses and multivariate analysis of variance. Significant differences were found for self-managed work group members versus traditional job holders regarding enhanced organizational involvement and enhanced work responsibility. However, there was no evidence of an age effect nor interaction regarding age. This study provides evidence to other action researchers and organizational decision makers that an "older" work force should not be considered a barrier to implementing this type of work design

Measuring feature team characteristics of software development teams

Gidlund, Maja January 2016 (has links)
This report evaluates the team-structure of three software maintenance teams in order to decide their level of featureness (a term that defines to what extent a team has the quality (the set of characteristics) of being a feature team). Simulations of changes that are expressed as beneficial in an agile environment and that could increase the teams‘ level of featureness within the team structure are performed. The results show that each team‘s level of featureness is affected differently by each change. Partly, this underlines the importance of understanding the current team-structure before implementing changes that aim to increase the level of featureness. And secondly, within the scope of the study, the change where a user expert is declared a team member is concluded as the change that increases the teams‘ level of featureness the most. Based on the results the report also concludes that it is essential to implement changes that affect different, which in combination can increase the level of featureness.
