A fim de examinar esse contexto etnográfico específico, a análise parte de questões sobre os mecanismos de ação que influenciam os seminaristas a escolherem a vida sacerdotal, como são estabelecidas as relações com a instituição e com a comunidade religiosa. E, igualmente, examinar as rupturas e continuidades da formação institucional dos Seminários católicos e dos seminaristas no contexto brasileiro. Para tal, foi necessário também apresentar alguns argumentos sobre o atual contexto em que se encontra o catolicismo brasileiro. Com base numa metodologia qualitativa, foram realizadas entrevistas e aplicações de questionários com os atores participantes da pesquisa. Além de apontar o perfil sócio-econômico-cultural dos seminaristas católicos, este trabalho propõe um modelo concêntrico de análise da vocação católica, possibilitando um novo viés interpretativo para o fenômeno da vocação. / This work is an anthropological analysis of the diocesan seminarians and the phenomenon of Catholic priestly vocation. In order to examine this particular ethnographic context, the analysis of issues on the mechanisms that influence the seminarians to choose the priestly life, as relations with the institution and the religious community are established. And also examine the ruptures and continuities of institutional formation of Catholic seminaries and seminarians in the Brazilian context. To this end, it was necessary to also present some arguments on the context in which it is the Brazilian Catholicism. Based on a qualitative methodology, interviews and questionnaires applications with the actors involved in the study were performed. Besides pointing to the socio-economic-cultural profile of Catholic seminarians, this paper proposes a concentric model analysis of Catholic vocation, enabling a new interpretive bias for the vocation phenomenon.

Assessing Epistemological Development among Women in Evangelical Seminaries

Building on the foundation laid by John David Trentham and his colleagues in researching the epistemological development among pre-ministry students, this phenomenological study used the Perry scheme as a lens to examine development among women in evangelical seminaries. Understanding female seminarians’ patterns and perspectives on knowing, along with the contextual realities they experience in seminary, aids women who desire to go to seminary, women in seminary, seminary administration, professors, and student development personnel, as well as churches in their ministry to women. The literature review in this work covers the theological foundation for epistemology. Theologically, knowledge is seen to be dependent, unified, relational, requiring belief, and necessitating obedience. From this foundation, Perry’s research and nine-stage scheme is explored. As this study focuses on the epistemological development of women, the following studies related to gender are also explored: Women’s Ways of Knowing by Belenky et al., Knowing and Reasoning in College by Baxter Magolda, and In a Different Voice by Carol Gilligan. Themes between these works were identified as voice, relationship, and connectedness. The Reflective Judgment Model by King and Kitchener is also examined and compared with Perry’s scheme. The use of the Reflective Judgment Model to study the development of seminary students is also reported. The ongoing dialogue of research on pre-ministry students is then surveyed including a discussion of inverse consistency and Trentham’s taxonomy of epistemological priorities and competencies. Thirty women were interviewed using semi-structured protocols to explore their epistemological development in their institutional contexts. This study included denominational and inter/multidenominational contexts. Participants were enlisted by completing a Thesis Study Participation Form. Using a custom-designed interview protocol for this population, an interview was conducted with each participant. The interviews were then transcribed and submitted to the CSID for scoring. The transcripts were also examined for statements demonstrating each of the epistemological priorities or competencies in Trentham’s Taxonomy. Statement attributions were determined in conjunction with Trentham. An independent content analysis was also completed to examine themes and trends. The data was then analyzed and findings reported. An Investigation of the Perceptions of Christian Seminary Counseling Students Regarding Play Therapy

The threefold purpose of this study was to assess the extent to which counseling seminary students' beliefs corresponded to the tenets of child-centered play therapy, the amount of training seminary counseling students received in the area of child counseling and play therapy, and the applicability of child-centered play therapy courses in seminary counselor education programs. The researcher pursued this purpose through administration of a survey instrument she developed. The instrument consisted of 22 demographic items and 23 5-point Likert scale items based on the tenets of child-centered play therapy. The sample was comprised of 206 seminary counseling students from 12 Christian seminaries across the United States: 155 female and 51 male participants ranging in age from 21 to 60 years old and including 5.3% African American, 3.9% Asian, 1.5% Biracial/Multiracial, 3.4% Hispanic, 83% White (Non-Hispanic), 2.4% Other. Multiple regression analysis was utilized to determine which demographic variables were significant predictors of respondents' beliefs regarding child-centered play therapy. Results indicated significance at p < .05 level. Specifically, respondents who reported feeling more prepared to counsel children reported beliefs more congruent with child-centered play therapy, and respondents from the Southwestern and Southeastern portions of the United States exhibited beliefs less congruent with child-centered play therapy. Respondents' reports of their gender, age, denominational grouping, counseling theory, previous training to work with children, parental status, and future plans to counsel children did not significantly predict beliefs corresponding to child-centered play therapy. Descriptive data revealed that 83.5% of respondents intended to counsel children after completing their graduate studies, yet only 20.4% of respondents reported having completed coursework in child counseling; thus, they appeared inadequately prepared to work with this specialized population. Implications for seminary counselor education programs are discussed.

The Sociological Factors Associated with the Career Development of Women Theological Graduates

Because it is representative of other Southern Baptist seminaries and distinguished by a vigorous graduate program, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS) was chosen as the institution from which the population was taken. The study, conducted in 1984, collected data about women graduates of SWBTS for the years 1975, 1978, and 1981, with the following purposes: (1) to develop a profile of women who choose seminary education as an avenue of career preparation; (2) to determine the degree of influence of significant others --individuals in the family, school, peer group, and the church -- on women pursuing graduate education in order to prepare for ministry vocations. Among the findings of the study are these observations: 1. Despite a consistently supportive role from church pastors about respondents' career choices before, during, and after seminary, few seminary graduates encountered clergywomen as role models, or received material support from their home churches, and many encountered gender bias and discrimination as they sought ministry-related careers throughout their educational careers and afterwards. 2. The most desired career choices expressed by respondents include missionary, age group minister, counselor, minister of education, and college or seminary teacher. 3. The least desired career choices of respondents include minister of music, graded choir director, church musician, minister of outreach, pastor, associate pastor, chaplain, and recreation specialist. 4. Mothers, fathers, campus ministers, close friends, fellow seminary students, and missionaries and mission activities were cited, variously, as positively influencing seminary graduates at different stages of their careers. The study's conclusions include the further observation that despite disturbing discrimination against them, the women querried remained faithful to the Southern Baptist denomination, desired to serve, and wished for self improvement in their study and growth.

The Relationship Between Faculty-Led Small Groups and Character Development of Seminarians in an Evangelical Seminary

The problem for this study was the relationship between faculty-led small groups and the development in seminary students of the character traits biblically mandated of those who occupy spiritual leadership positions in the church (1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9). This experimental study developed and assessed a program which combined involvement in a small group of peers with a faculty mentor. The discipleship groups met weekly for two semesters for either thirty or seventy-five minutes. The research instrument used was the Biblical Leadership Qualities Inventory, a revision of the Spiritual Leadership Qualities Inventory. The longer treatment length groups were not found to differ significantly from the shorter treatment length groups for change in trait score (p = .281), although means were generally lower for the longer groups. A MANOVA showed that both treatment groups differed significantly from the control group for the traits observed (p < .001) with the general direction of change being to a lower trait score. Five post-hoc hypotheses were investigated. An education effect, as measured by number of traits studied in the group, was not found to be related to outcome. A fatigue or stress effect, as measured by academic load, work load, and marital status, was not found to be related to outcome. Instrument weakness, peer effect, and mentor effect were suggested as possible explanations for the outcome. Peer and mentor relationships may have resulted in the subjects developing higher standards and thus a decrease on the posttest. Demographic factors of marital status, Christian age, academic load, work load, and absences did not prove to be effective predictors of outcome. Neither faculty trait scores nor faculty fidelity to the topics for discussion in the treatment groups proved to be an effective predictor of student outcome. Previous research by Parker showing factors for the SLQI was not replicable and thus the factors were not found to be reliable.

This thesis concerning the way to priesthood, the diocesan priests especially, and explores mainly the moment when young men make their decision for the priesthood. This thesis wants to know the role of the Archdiocese of Prague, the priests, the Christian parents and how they can motivate and support them on their life journey towards their profession. The first chapter describes the journey towards the priesthood according to the Church documents. The second chapter is interested in the specific forms of the pastoral work within the Archdiocese of Prague. The Archdiocesan Seminary is mentioned in the third chapter. The last the fourth chapter is concerning the current status of the clergy and priestly ordination within the Archdiocese of Prague. The second, the third and the fourth chapters represent the author's contribution in the form of assessment of the questionnaires. These questionnaires were distributed and used relating the priest calling pastoral work.

The Comparison of Mandatory and Voluntary Compliance to Diet and Exercise Regimens Among Cardiovascular High Risk Seminary Theological Students

This study evaluated a mandatory fitness assessment and counseling program designed to reduce coronary risk factors related to diet and exercise. The study was conducted at a southwestern graduate level theological institution. There were 19 mandatory and 22 voluntary participants. Each subject initially had either high blood pressure, high percentage body fat, or high total cholesterol. Significant changes were made within both groups regarding body fat percentage and diastolic blood pressure. Total cholesterol levels decreased for the voluntary group only. The mandatory group significantly improved their exercise level, yet still showed a significantly less positive attitude towards exercise. Overall, the fitness assessment and counseling was somewhat beneficial for both the mandatory and voluntary groups.
