Not until the second half of the twentieth century have museums been recognized formally as intrinsically educational institutions. Dialoguing with this question and thinking about the educational role of museums that this research has the proposal to investigate the formation and consolidation of the Educational Activity Service (EAS) of the Paulista Museum, a century-old institution inaugurated in 1895 as a Natural History museum and that today is configured as Museum of History and Material Culture. Thus, the objective in this dissertation is to elucidate the action proposed by EAS to the academic audience, which is the largest audience visiting the Museum. Although the museum has been closed since 2013 due to a renovation, educational activities have not ceased to happen. It is intended, that way, to contribute, integrating the produced theoretical knowledge, that deals with education in museums, with the proposed and presented practice by the Educational Activity Service of the Paulista Museum in these years of work. / O entendimento dos museus como espaços de educação é uma percepção relativamente recente na história dessas instituições. Foi só a partir da segunda metade do século XX que os museus passaram a ser reconhecidos formalmente como instituições intrinsecamente educativas. Dialogando com essa questão e pensando no papel educativo dos museus, a presente pesquisa tem a proposta de investigar a formação e consolidação do Serviço de Atividades Educativas (SAE) do Museu Paulista, instituição centenária inaugurada em 1895 como um museu de História Natural e que hoje se configura como Museu de História da Cultura Material. Sendo assim, objetiva-se nesta dissertação elucidar as propostas de ação do SAE, sobretudo frente ao público escolar, que representa o maior público que visita o Museu. Embora o museu se encontre com as portas fechadas desde agosto de 2013 por motivo de reforma, as ações educativas não deixaram de acontecer. Pretende- se dessa forma contribuir, integrando o conhecimento teórico produzido que gira em torno da educação em museus, com a prática proposta e apresentada pelo Serviço de Atividades Educativas do Museu Paulista, nesses anos de atuação.
