The Application of Data Mining¡XID3 Decision Tree and Fuzzy Theory on Distribution System Service RestorationLu, Shao-Yi 23 June 2003 (has links)
The distribution system containing numerous protective facilities and switch equipment ranges over a wide boundary . The most urgent problem the dispatcher has to tackle right after the breakdown of distribution system in how to resume as soon as possible power supply for the none-faulted out-of-service area. Therefore, distribution system service restoration is an important and practical subject.
During the process of maintaining and operation ,the distribution district collected a lot of data. These data includes substation-related automatic operating data , switch section of doing a feeder , load data of high and low tension customers, and historical distribution system planning information concerning load transfer while operation, etc. The useful resource could help the dispatcher to get the best load transfer on distribution system service restoration.
Datum-oriented researcher refers to the exploration of the concealing regulations and knowledge and the techniques regarding comprehensible model. This thesis manages to collect the maintaining and operation data of the distribution district ; it makes use of the information exploration techniques and ID3 decision tree and fuzzy theory to get the load transfer rule and knowledge , and to establish the load transfer model. After the fault occurred, it would help the dispatcher to get the best tactics for the load transfer on distribution system service restoration under the constraint condition.
This thesis chooses the underground distribution system in sijhih of the Keeling District Offices of Taiwan Power Company as a sample. That underground distribution system comprising 8 distribution feeder ,73 distribution spaces,16 high tension customers, 28 feeder section, 4 feeder-tie-switch and 19 lateral-tie-switch will be simulated on computers to verify the proposed method for the distribution system service restoration.

A multi-agent Based Fault Location Detection of Distribution Network with Distributed GenerationsWang, Chin-hsien 24 July 2009 (has links)
In current distribution automations design, fault flags generated by overcurrent relays are used to detect the feeder fault section. With the integration of distributed generations (DG), fault currents could be contributed from different directions and jeopardize the fault detection function. A large fault current contributed by a DG flows from downstream of a feeder could be detected by the overcurrent relay and lead to the confusion in fault detection function. In this thesis, adjunction current measurements and fault flags are utilized to minimize the possibility of mis-identification of fault section. The structure and data flow of a Java agent development framework (JADE) is adopted for feeder fault detection, identification and service restoration (FDIR). Based on information from local measurements and other agents, the FDIR function can be better conducted by local agents. Test results indicate that multi-agent systems can be used to improve system reliability and reduce service interruption time.

Reconfiguration and Self-healing Mechanisms in Distribution Systems with High Distributed Generation (DG) PenetrationZidan, Aboelsood Ali Abdelrohman January 2013 (has links)
Recently, interest in Smart Grid (SG) as a tool for modernization and automation of the current distribution system has rapidly increased. This interest can be explained by the common belief that SG technologies greatly enhance system reliability, power quality and overall efficiency. One of the most important objectives of an SG is to accommodate a wide variety of generation options. This objective aligns with the new trends and policies that encourage higher penetration levels of Distributed Generation (DG) according to environmental, regulatory and economical concerns. Most DG units are either renewable or low emission energy sources, thus meeting the Canadian emission portfolios, while they remain attractive for both utilities and customers for different reasons. DG units can postpone large investment in transmission and central generation, reduce energy losses, and increase system reliability and power quality.
SG is centered on several objectives such as self-healing, motivating consumers to participate in grid operation, resisting attacks, accommodating a wide variety of DG units and storage devices, and optimizing assets. Yet, one of the main goals of SG is to increase the reliability of power systems. Reliability is a vital factor in power system performance, due to the full dependence of today???s life on electricity and the high cost of system outages, especially for critical loads. Therefore, one of the main salient features of SG is its ability of self-healing.
The insertion of DG units changes distribution networks from being passive with unidirectional power flow and a single power source (the primary substation) towards active networks with multi-directional power flow and several power sources (the primary substation, along with DG units). As a result, the interconnection of DG units creates several impacts on different practices such as voltage profile, power flow, power quality, stability, reliability, fault detection, and restoration. Current policies call for the direct disconnection of all DG units once any failure occurs in the network. However, with a high DG power penetration, the utilities cannot operate the system efficiently without the DG units??? support. Furthermore, automatic disconnection of the DG units during faults reduces the expected benefits associated with DG units drastically.
Motivated by the above facts, the overall target of this thesis is to introduce distribution system mechanisms to facilitate realizing the concept of Smart Distribution System (SDS) in both normal and emergency modes. In particular, three main functions are dealt with in this research work: distribution network reconfiguration, DG allocation and self-healing.
First, for distribution network reconfiguration, a method based on genetic algorithm is presented to address the reconfiguration problem for distribution systems while the effect of load variation and the stochastic power generation of renewable-based DG units are taken into consideration. The presented method determines the annual distribution network reconfiguration scheme considering switching operation costs in order to minimize annual energy losses by determining the optimal configuration for each season of the year.
Second, for DG allocation, a joint optimization algorithm has been proposed to tackle the DG allocation and network reconfiguration problems concurrently, as these two issues are inherently coupled. The two problems are dealt with together while the objectives are minimizing the cost, as an economic issue, and greenhouse gas emissions, as an environmental issue. The proposed method takes the probabilistic nature of both the renewable energy resources and loads into account.
The last operation function dealt with in this thesis is distribution system restoration. In order to accomplish this function, two stages are presented:
In the first stage, numerous practical aspects related to service restoration problem have been investigated. These aspects include variations in the load and customer priorities, price discounts for in-service customers based on their participation in a load-curtailment scheme that permits other customers to be supplied, the presence of manual and automated switches, and the incorporation of DG units (dispatchable and wind-based units) in the restoration process.
In the second stage, the smart grid concept and technologies have been applied to construct a self-healing framework to be applied in smart distribution systems. The proposed multi-agent system is designed to automatically locate and isolate faults, and then decide and implement the switching operations to restore the out-of-service loads. Load variation has been taken into consideration to avoid the need for further reconfigurations during the restoration period. An expert-based decision-making algorithm has been used to govern the control agents. The rules have been extracted from the practical issues related to the service restoration problem, discussed in the first stage.

Integrated Optimal Dispatch, Restoration and Control for MicrogridsJain, Akshay Kumar 22 May 2024 (has links)
Electric grids across the world are experiencing an ever increasing number of extreme events ranging from extreme weather events to cyberattacks. Such extreme events have the potential to cause widespread power outages and even a blackout. A vast majority of power outages impacting the U.S. electric grid impact the distribution system. There are an estimated five million miles of distribution lines in the US electric grid. A majority of these lines are low-clearance overhead lines making them even more susceptible to damage during extreme events. However, this vital component of the U.S. electric grid remained neglected until recently.
In recent decades, the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as solar photovoltaic systems and battery energy storage systems at the grid edge have provided a major opportunity for enhancing the resilience of distribution systems. These DERs can be used to restore power supply when the bulk grid becomes unavailable. However, managing the interactions among different types of DERs has been challenging. Low inertia and significant differences in time constants of operation between conventional generation and inverter based resources (IBRs) are some of these challenges. Widespread deployment of microgrid controller capabilities can be a promising solution to manage these interactions.
However, due to interoperability and integration challenges of optimization and dynamics control systems, power conversion systems and communication systems, the adoption of microgrids especially in underserved communities has been slow.
The research presented in this dissertation is a significant step forward in this direction by proposing an approach which integrates optimal dispatch, sequential microgrid restoration and control algorithms. Potential cyberattack paths are identified by creating a detailed cyber-physical system model for microgrids. A two-tiered intrusion detection system is developed to detect and mitigate cyberattacks within the cyber layer itself. The developed sequential microgrid restoration algorithm coordinates optimal DER dispatch with the operation of legacy devices with no remote control or communication capabilities and net-metered loads with limited communications. By better utilizing the control capabilities of IBRs, reliance on low-latency centralized control algorithms has also been reduced. The developed approach systematically ensures adequate availability of control during dispatch and restoration to maintain microgrid stability. This research can thus pave the way for faster and more cost-effective deployment of microgrids. / Doctor of Philosophy / A U.S. National Academy of Engineering report has described the power grid as the greatest engineering achievement of the 20th century. The power grid is a complex interconnected system consisting of the power transmission system and the distribution system. The power transmission system consists of the power lines seen while driving on the freeways and the large power generating stations consisting of renewable, coal or nuclear power plants. Ensuring the reliable operation of the transmission system has always been a priority.
The distribution system on the other hand consists of pole top transformers seen closer to homes which reduce the voltage to levels safe for electrical appliances. It also consists of the millions of miles of low-clearance overhead distribution lines deployed across the U.S. that provide electricity to every household. This critical part of U.S. electricity infrastructure had remained neglected which is the reason why 90% of power outages impact the distribution system. In recent decades, the integration of renewable energy sources like solar systems and battery storage systems has created an unprecedented opportunity for increasing the resilience of distribution systems against extreme events. These energy sources can provide power supply when the transmission system becomes unavailable. However, ensuring safe and reliable integrated operation of these sources with conventional diesel generators especially while isolated from the transmission system is challenging.
This is where microgrids, which are self-sufficient miniature power grids, can help. Microgrids provide required control, communication and cybersecurity features necessary for reliable integrated operation of renewable and conventional energy sources. However, the challenges involved with interoperability of these systems has slowed down the deployment of microgrids especially in underserved communities. This is the research gap addressed in this dissertation. This research provides an approach for integrating the optimization, control, power electronics and cybersecurity systems. Reliance on expensive low-latency communication systems is reduced by utilizing the emerging capabilities of power electronics devices used for integrating the renewable energy sources with the electric power grid. Voltage control devices already deployed in the distribution systems which do not have remote control or communication capabilities have also been coordinated with energy sources. The research presented in this dissertation is a significant step forward for increasing access to power supply during outages and for reducing the time and cost of deployment of microgrids.

Pricing and Scheduling Optimization Solutions in the Smart GridZhao, Binyan 09 September 2015 (has links)
The future smart grid is envisioned as a large scale cyber-physical system encompassing advanced power, computing, communications and control technologies. This work provides comprehensive accounts of the application with optimization methods, probability theory, commitment and dispatching technologies for addressing open problems in three emerging areas that pertain to the smart grid: unit commitment, service restoration problems in microgrid systems, and charging services for the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) markets.
The work on the short-term scheduling problem in renewable-powered islanded microgrids is to determine the least-cost unit commitment (UC) and the associated dispatch, while meeting electricity load, environmental and system operating requirements. A novel probability-based concept, {\em probability of self-sufficiency}, is introduced to indicate the probability that the microgrid is capable of meeting local demand in a self-sufficient manner. Furthermore, we make the first attempt in approaching the mixed-integer UC problem from a convex optimization perspective, which leads to an analytical closed-form characterization of the optimal commitment and dispatch solutions.
The extended research of the renewable-powered microgrid in the connection mode is the second part of this work. In this situation, the role of microgrid is changed to be either an electricity provider selling energy to the main grid or a consumer purchasing energy from the main grid. This interaction with the main grid completes work on the scheduling schemes.
Third, a microgrid should be connected with the main grid most of the time. However, when a blackout of the main grid occurs, how to guarantee reliability in a microgrid as much as possible becomes an immediate question, which motivates us to investigate the service restoration in a microgrid, driven islanded by an unscheduled breakdown from the main grid.
The objective is to determine the maximum of the expected restorative loads by choosing the best arrangement of the power network configurations immediately from the beginning of the breakdown all the way to the end of the island mode.
Lastly, the work investigating the pricing strategy in future PHEV markets considers a monopoly market with two typical service classes. The unique characteristics of battery charging result in a piecewise linear quality of service model. Resorting to the concept of subdifferential, some theoretical results, including the existence and uniqueness of the subscriber equilibrium as well as the convergence of the corresponding subscriber dynamics are established. In the course of developing revenue-maximizing pricing strategies for both service classes, a general tradeoff has been identi ed between monetization and customer acquisition. / Graduate

This dissertation aims to develop a methodology to provide adequate Energy Restoration Plans (ERPs) in contingency situations to large-scale distribution systems (with thousands of lines, load buses and sectionalizing switches), considering the existence of voltage regulators, capacitors banks and different types of sectionalizing switches. The proposed methodology considers the operational characteristics of different types of sectionalizing switches (existence of remote control, possibility of open-load and/or short-circuit, etc.) for the purpose of obtaining ERPs. Usually the developed methodologies consider only the existence of remotely controlled and manually controlled switches, excluding other operational characteristics of the sectionalizing switches. As the service restoration problem is combinatory with multiple objectives and constraints, the proposed methodology is based on Evolutionary Algorithms, multiobjective optimization techniques and on the data structure named Node-Depth Encoding. The Node-Depth Encoding is used to computationally represent, in an efficient way, the topology of the distribution systems. The proposed methodology is validated through computational simulations performed in real large-scale distribution systems.

Otimização do processo de restabelecimento de energia em sistemas de distribuição de grande porte utilizando chaves automáticas / Optimization of the service restoration process in large scale distribution systems using automatic switchingBorges, Henrique Fernandes 30 September 2013 (has links)
This dissertation presents a new methodology to address service restoration problem in Large Scale Distribution Systems (DS), that allow the obtaining of service restoration plans considering only automatic switches after the occurrence of interruption. This procedure is performed through the Network Reconfiguration (NR), which basically consists in changing the topology of the electrical system by changing states (open/closed) of the switches. For this, various load points DS are grouped into blocks separated by switches, forming sectors. Thus, from the NR is possible to exchange charges between feeders in case of interruption somewhere in the DS. The methodology proposed here divides the process of service restoration in two stages. The first exchange of charges between feeders is performed using only automatic switches, and the second stage uses any type of switches, automatic or not. The problem of service restoration in Large-Scale DS involves multiple objectives, some of which are conflicting, moreover, due to the large number of variables involved in this problem, it is subject to the combinatorial explosion phenomenon. Thus, meta-heuristics have been proposed as alternatives to address the problem, and among these, the Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) have shown to be more efficient. Given the above, this work uses Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms, along with the graph encoding called Node-Depth Representation, which allows an efficient computational representation of DS topology. To validate the proposed methodology were performed computer simulations in real DS city of Londrina, in actual operation. The results will be presented in this thesis showed a substantial gain compared to other methods.

Several real time control and operation applications for Distribution Systems (DS), such as, service restoration, require a procedure for real time load modeling. That is, a methodology for real time estimation of the distribution transformers loading which are generally not monitored. For this purpose, in this dissertation, a Real Time Load Estimator (RTLE) is proposed based on: off-line information (monthly consumption and typical load curves); a computationally efficient algorithm for power flow calculation based on the data structure called Node-Depth Encoding; and on the few available real time measurements on the distribution system. The proposed RTLE operates in two stages: (1) Off-line Load Estimation and (2) Real Time Load Refinement, performed in different moments (one off-line and the other in real time), providing the distribution transformers load estimates. Using only the offline information, the proposed RTLE allows the estimation of the loads of the distribution transformers with a measure of uncertainty. By processing the available real time measurements, using an efficient power flow calculation algorithm, the proposed RTLE refines these off-line estimates. This dissertation presents several simulations showing the efficiency of the proposed RTLE. Some parameters are evaluated and their influence on the RTLE load estimates, such as gross errors in the available real time measurements and feeders with only current magnitude measurements. Besides, it is emphasized the influence of the initial load estimates obtained from Stage (1), and the importance of the statistical hypothesis used in this stage in the load estimation process. Also, this work presents the application of the proposed RTLE in a real Brazilian DS. A validation test was performed through in-field verification in a real distribution feeder, which was executed via load meters installation in three distribution transformers to evaluate the quality of the load estimates provided by the RTLE. Finally, the proposed RTLE was tested in a real large scale DS to evaluate its computational performance and the difficult level of its implementation. It is noteworthy that its implementation is straightforward with other Distribution Operation Center tools, such as load aggregation and load flow calculation, and few routines must be added for integrating the RTLE.

The development of a reliable distribution system is certainly a challenge to electrical industry professionals. However, these systems are subject to failures and thus the fast restoration brings customer satisfaction and reduces the compensation paid by the electricity utilities. In this context, this dissertation aims to evaluate the methodology for service restoration called \"AEMT-H\", which is based on multi-objective evolutionary algorithms and in the data structure called Node Depth Encoding (NDE). This evaluation will occur by applying the \"AEMT-H\" to obtain service restoration plans considering the occurrence of simple faults in the COPEL system of the city of Londrina. The obtained results will bee valuated statistically and subjectively by professionals of the Distribution Operation Center. It is important to highlight that Evolutionary algorithms have shown promising results to treat the service restoration problem in distribution systems. In particular, the results obtained when using NDE tocomputationally represent the electrical topology of large distribution systems (with thousand of buses and switchers) are very interesting in terms of time processing (in the order of seconds). The system of Londrina has 30,156 buses, 2,660 switchers normally closed, 250 switchers normally opened and supplies a universe of more than 231,000 consumers connected directly to the system with voltage of 13.8 kV or, after distribution transformers, with voltages of 220V and 127V. This system contains 6 substations 138 kV/13,8 kV and 64 feeders, and a installed power of 541.7 MVA.
