Assessment of the biological quality of raw and treated effluents from three sewage treatment plants in the Western Cape, South Africa

Hendricks, Rahzia January 2011 (has links)
<p>The aim of this study was to compare the water quality of raw wastewater and treated sewage effluents from three different sewage treatment plants in the Western Cape, South Africa. The treatment plants investigated are on the same river system. Sewage treatment plant 1 and 2 use older technologies, while sewage treatment plant 3 has been upgraded and new technologies (membrane bioreactor) were incorporated in the treatment processes. The first objective was to determine the occurrence of total coliforms, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and fluoroquinolone and sulfamethoxazole antibiotic residues in raw wastewater and treated sewage effluents. Bacteria in treated sewage effluents can result in diseases such as dysentery, gastroenteritis, and typhoid upon exposure. A chromogenic test was used to screen for coliforms and E. coli. Enzyme linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISA) were used to quantitate antibiotic residues (fluoroquinolones and sulfamethoxazole) in raw wastewater and treated sewage effluents. This study showed that bacteria are present in raw wastewater and residual bacteria are released with treated sewage effluents from sewage treatment plants.</p>

Presence, Fate, and Behaviour of Emerging Micropollutants in the New Zealand and Antarctic Coastal Environment

Emnet, Philipp Johannes January 2013 (has links)
Many chemicals used in everyday personal care products are today amongst the most commonly detected compounds in surface waters throughout the world. Collectively referred to as micropollutants, they include paraben preservatives, organic UV filters, alkylphenols, triclosan, and bisphenol-A. Micropollutants enter the aquatic environment predominantly via wastewater discharges. To date there has been only limited assessments on their presence and impacts in coastal environments. The wastewater treatment plants in Lyttelton, Governors Bay, and Diamond Harbour were found to discharge micropollutants into Whakaraupo Harbour. Similarly, the sewage effluents of the Antarctic research stations Scott Base and McMurdo Station were found to discharge micropollutants into Erebus Bay. Strong seasonal changes in the Whakaraupo effluent concentrations were observed, with concentrations higher in winter than in summer. Concentrations fluctuated greatly in Scott Base, reaching concentrations higher than have been previously reported internationally. The nine most commonly detected analytes were octylphenol, 4-MBC, BP-3, BP-1, triclosan, methyl triclosan, bisphenol-A, estrone, and coprostanol. The marine environments in Whakaraupo Harbour and Erebus Bay were found to be similarly impacted. The most commonly detected micropollutants in seawater in Whakaraupo Harbour were mParaben, 4-MBC, BP-3, OMC, bisphenol-A, and estrone. The marine sediments in Whakaraupo Harbour accumulated mParaben, octylphenol, 4-MBC, BP-3, BP-1, bisphenol-A, OMC, estrone, and coprostanol, while mussels bioaccumulated mParaben, octylphenol, and BP-3. The same range of micropollutants were detected in seawater throughout Erebus Bay, including the reference sites. Marine biota (clams, urchins, and fish), including those from the reference site, were shown to readily bioaccumulate mParaben, pParaben, octylphenol, BP-3, E2, EE2, and coprostanol. A much larger coastal area of Antarctica and New Zealand is therefore impacted than was previously thought. Photodegradation was identified as an important environmental degradation pathway for micropollutants. mParaben, BPA, EE2, and BP-3 are highly photo-stable, while triclosan and OP readily photodegrade. The low temperature and irradiance conditions in Antarctica were modelled to investigate their potential environmental persistence. Field measurements suggest the model may underestimate the photodegradation potential of some micropollutants.

The usage of treated sewage effluent and composted sewage sludge represents a good opportunity for the agricultural sector of water supply and plant nutrition, besides being an adequate, safe and beneficial end for the agricultural for these residues when correctly handled. Thus, this study was aimed to evaluate the treated sewage effluent and the composted sewage sludge as a partial substitute, total and in doses superior to the conventional nitrogen fertilization, on the soil and on the crambe culture. The experiment was conducted in a protected environment of PVC vases with useful volume of 45,5L, at the Department of Soils and Environmental Resources of Agricultural Sciences Faculty, belonging to Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (FCA/UNESP), Botucatu/SP, between July and October of 2015. The experimental design was completely randomized in a split plot arrangement; using the plots two types of irrigation water, potable water and treated sewage effluent and the subplots seven levels of nitrogen fertilization, adding up fourteen treatments with ten repetitions. The treatments within each parcel are represented by: T0 – no nitrogen fertilization; T1 – 100% mineral nitrogen fertilization; T2 – 50% mineral nitrogen fertilizer; + 50% composted sewage sludge; and T3, T4, T5, T6 corresponding to 100%, 150%, 200% and 250% of nitrogen fertilizer from the composted sewage sludge, respectively. The data concerning the variables were analyzed statistically through the SISVAR software and were submitted to a variance analysis to 5% of probability, being those averages compared using the Tukey test to 5% of significance. It was opted to redo the statistical analysis of the treatments that only had received the composted sewage sludge, adopting the regression analysis. The use of treated sewage effluent provided increment of components development and production. The conventional nitrogen fertilization substitution by the composted sewage sludge fertilizer elevated the yield of grains–plant, with a better yield provided by the maximum dose of N applied through the composted sludge. In the soil, the increasing doses of sewage sludge elevated the pH, the CTC, SB, V%, content of organic matter, P, K, Ca, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn, and the usage of treated sewage effluent elevated the levels of Mg, S and Mn.

Estudos espectroscópicos de matéria orgânica e ácidos húmicos de solos sob adição de efluente de esgoto tratado / Spectroscopic studies of organic matter and humic acids from soil with addition of treated sewage effluent

Bruno Henrique Martins 03 August 2009 (has links)
The increasing demand of water sources in the cities has done the man search for other different sources for irrigation of cultures in agricultural fields, hence it\'s an activity that demands a large amount of water. In this context, the use of treated sewage effluent (TSE), industrial or domestic, instead of water for irrigation of several cultures, has been shown to be a very promising way to save water for human consume. The purpose of this study is to evaluate by spectroscopic techniques (Fourier Transformed Infra-Red - FTIR, Fluorescence Spectroscopy, UV-Visible Spectroscopy and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance - EPR) the changes in the soil organic matter (SOM) and humic acids (HA) extracted from soils irrigated or not with treated sewage effluent, in the following concentrations of irrigation: SI (soil non-irrigated with TSE), 100 (soil irrigated with TSE and soil humidity in the same level of field capacity) and 200 (soil irrigated with TSE and soil humidity 100 % above field capacity). Besides these techniques, it was also determined the carbon percentage and used the Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy to measure the degree of humification in samples of whole soil, irrigated or not with TSE. The soil samples analyzed in this study were collected from an experimental field in the city of Lins - SP, from a sugarcane culture soil, in the depth till 100 cm. The analysis of samples of whole soil showed a decrease in the carbon percentage in the range of 2 to 15% in the irrigation conditions comparing with the non - irrigated area. These results are preoccupying considering that it\'s a soil with less of 1% of carbon content, and has an additional decrease in the SOM when irrigated with TSE, what may cause limiting in the soil fertility and structure. The results obtained by LIF for the same samples, showed an increase in the humification degree varying from 9 to 30% in the irrigated area. This increase in the humification degree of soil organic matter (SOM) is consistent with carbon percentage decreasing in soil, which probably loses more labile fractions, remaining the most recalcitrant ones. The spectra obtained by the FTIR spectroscopy for HA analyzed were typical, not showing a significative difference, considering different layers of depth and treatment or not with TSE. The data obtained by fluorescence spectroscopy, using three different methodologies, of HA in solution showed, as well as the LIF spectroscopy for whole soils, an increment in the humification degree according to application of TSE. At the same way that happens with SOM, this increase in the humification degree may be attributed to degradation of carbon more labile fractions and remaining of the most recalcitrant ones in the humic acids. The results of E4/E6 ratio (ratio between the absorbance intensities at 465 and 665 nm) obtained by UV-Visible spectroscopy showed a decrease in the superficial layers, comparing the three conditions analyzed. The results obtained by the EPR spectroscopy showed an increase in the concentration of SFR (semiquinone free-radicals) in the HA with the increase of depth in the two conditions of irrigation, 100 and 200, being more pronunciated in the second treatment. Corroborating with the results obtained by the others spectroscopies, this increase in the SFR concentration probably may be attributed to the increase in the humification degree. In this manner, according with the obtained data, the use of TSE as source of irrigation replacing the water in the soil condition analyzed are preoccupying, hence it may cause limitations in soil fertility and structure, as evidenced by the decrease of the SOM content. However, the experiments must continue to confirm and validate the initials tendencies detected, and to search new alternatives for soil and culture tillage to make possible the TSE application in sustainable conditions.

Efeitos da AdubaÃÃo Nitrogenada sobre a produÃÃo da Mamona irrigada com Ãgua e Efluentes de Esgoto domÃstico tratado / Effect of the nitrogenada fertilization on the production of the Mamona irrigated with water and effluent of treated domestic sewer

Ãtalo Reges Neco Capistrano 16 March 2007 (has links)
The castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) can be considered as a commercial crop with multiple utilities, among them, the use of its seed oil for biodiesel production, a motor fuel considered ecologically clean. The present study was conducted under field conditions, in an Argissolo Acinzentado eutrophic soil, and had the objective to evaluate the castor bean yield (cultivar Nordestina BRS-149) response to nitrogen fertilization. The experimental design consisted of a split-plot model. One plot was irrigated with treated sewage effluent and the other with well water. Each plot was fertilized with five N rates in a form of Urea (T1=0, T2=30, T3=50, T4=70, T5=90 kgha-1 N), control treatment and three replications. The following parameters were evaluated: number of racemes/plant, first raceme length, 100 seed weight, kg of seed per hectare, first raceme height and stem diameter. The number of racemes/plant was significantly higher in the plot irrigated with treated sewage effluent than in the plot irrigated with well water. The type of irrigation did not cause differences in the first racemes lengths; however, differences occurred inside each plot as function of the N rate. The seed highest productivity was 2250 kgha-1 (rate of 90 kg Nha-1) for the plot irrigated with treated effluent, while was 2240 kgha-1 (rate of 50 kg Nha-1) for the plot irrigated with well water. The higher pH of the effluent may caused higher N volatilization, what may explain the higher N rate to reach maximum productivity in the effluent irrigated plot. The nitrogen fertilization caused significant increases in all parameters evaluated, except for 100 seed weight.

Emissão de gases de efeito estufa em solo cultivado com pastagem (Tifton 85) e irrigado com efluente de esgoto tratado / Emission of greenhouse gases from soil cultived with pasture (Tifton 85) and irrigated with treated sewage effluent

Santin, Roberta Clemente 21 June 2012 (has links)
Nowadays, the humanity is faced with great challenges such as the impending water shortage, the increase in food production or the search for alternative energy sources. The use of treated sewage effluent (TSE) as water and/or nutrient source for agricultural irrigation, can preserve existing water resources by minimising environmental impacts caused by its discharge to surface waters and increase water availability for other purposes. Moreover, wastewater use can contribute to increase agricultural production, preserving forested areas; reduce costs for nitrogen fertilization, and can diminish greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere due to higher biomass production and carbon accumulation in soil through root and plant residue deposition. Despite these favorable aspects, this practice interferes in the soil-plant-water system by modifying the inputs and outputs of carbon and nitrogen from their different pools. Thus, this study aimed at quantifying CO2, CH4 and N2O emissions from a Typic Haplustox cropped with Tifton 85 and irrigated with treated sewage effluent from the wastewater treatment plant (anaerobic and facultative ponds) at the city of Lins, SP and evaluates moreover changes in soil chemistry related to sodium, carbon and nitrogen concentrations and grass productivity. The study revealed that: (i) Tifton-85 was more productive at in treatments with TSE irrigation, compared to potable water irrigation, (ii) the Na concentration in the soil increased significantly regardless of the type of irrigation used (TSE or potable water), (iii) TSE irrigation increased the carbon and nitrogen concentrations in soil, (iv) N2O and CO2 emissions were predominantly dependent on soil moisture, temperature and the quantities of mineral nitrogen fertilizers applied as from the type of water used for irrigation, (v) only CH4 emissions had no direct relation to climate seasonality, and (vi) CO2, N2O and CH4 emissions of TSE irrigated soils did not differ from not irrigated or water irrigated pastures, being mainly affected by different management practices. The results indicate that crop irrigation with TSE can represent is a sustainable agricultural practice.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Rodrigo Souza.pdf: 360141 bytes, checksum: 6bf9d8f9ce30fb6fa717ad9798736d1e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-07-22 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The competition of water in different regions of the world, between agriculture and the human needs, has led to restrictions in the increase of food production, resulting in search for alternative sources. The use of effluent from secondary treatment of sewage (ETSE) has been a common practice in several seasonal situations. The aims of this work were: (i) create regression models to assist in the understanding of the dynamics of acidity (current, exchangeable and total), the exchangeable bases and the exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) in the soil, through the use of multiple linear regression (RLM), considering variables of soil, soil solution, plant, ETSE, weather and complementary variables, and (ii) compare the generated models with the standard method and the models generated from selecting variables. For the construction of the MLR models, the method of stepwise variable selection, forward and backward were used and compared with the standard method through the index adjusted determination coefficient (R2adj) and the variance inflation factor (VIF). The models developed from the method of variables selection were the most indicated. All the attributes in the scenarios and layers of the studied soils were not explained by the same group of variables. In general the results were consistent as far as the pH increased, the H + Al (total acidity) and Al (potential acidity) concentration decreased and Ca (calcium), Mg (magnesium) were increased. Because of the low-K (potassium) in the soil, the contribution of this nutrient by irrigation with ETSE cause little influence in the concentrations of this element. Due to the high sodium absorption ratio (SAR) in the effluent concentrations of this element, as well as PST were increased over time in soil. The accumulation and export of Na (sodium) by plants was not sufficient to prevent the increase in the concentrations of exchangeable Na and ESP in all studied scenarios and layers.
