Since Jung’s first allusions to it, the shaman “archetype” has occupied a place of considerable importance in Jungian discourse. The trajectory of this thesis began with Guggenbuhl-Craig’s (1999) view that a “shaman archetype” must be present in Jungian analysts for them to be good at their craft. To explicate the nature and characteristics of this archetype, this thesis examined both aspects of the phrase “shaman archetype”. It was necessary to examine Jung’s classical view of archetypes and certain critiques emerged. It was concluded, after investigation, that an emergent/developmental model of archetype was supported most by current research findings. This led to a working model of archetype which enabled further exploration of the “shaman archetype” question. The second part of the thesis applied this emergent /developmental model of the archetype to Siberian shamanism by seeing if there was evidence that its central characteristic of the “pre-initiatory illness” could be explained developmentally. It was concluded that Jungian analysts need the same kind of personality structure to be able to work with and use the somatic countertransference as a psychotherapeutic tool. A comparison and contrast of these ideas with contemporary uses of shamanism was then undertaken so that the implications for the training and selection of Jungian analysts could be deduced. / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

This thesis presents my findings on the Peruvian spiritual tourism industry in both Cusco and Iquitos, based on six weeks of fieldwork during Summer 2005. New Age and Peruvian spiritual belief systems have converged to form current Andean mystical and Amazonian shamanic practices. Increasing numbers of foreign tourists, whether believers in the New Age or not, are coming to gain a deeper understanding of these spiritual belief systems through participation in sacred rituals and ceremonies. The effects of such tourism are similar to other cultural tourism industries, such as increased competition, matters of authenticity, and performance of culture. Other issues are more specific to the spiritual tourism industry, such as the physical and sexual exploitation of tourists. But there are also many positive outcomes of this spiritual interchange, such as individual physical, mental, and emotional healing.

Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka hur upplevda livsförändringar relaterar till enskilda, handledda psykedeliska sessioner. Via en kvalitativ intervjustudie med sju personer analyserades induktivt beskrivningar av respondenternas motivation, psykedeliska upplevelse och upplevda livsförändringar. Undersökningens urval bestod av fyra män och tre kvinnor från varierande socioekonomiska bakgrunder, generationer och yrkesgrupper. Analysen visade att respondenterna var motiverade av nyfikenhet, beskrev upplevelser liknande den mystiska upplevelsen och upplevde omfattande livsförändringar såsom ökad självacceptans och minskad droganvändning, en mer konstruktiv inställning problem och motgångar samt förhöjda känslor av personlig mening. Resultatet var i linje med studier som visat att psykedeliskt understödd psykoterapeutisk behandling kan leda till minskat drogmissbruk, bättre psykisk hälsa och ökat välbefinnande. För en framtida studie föreslås att använda måttet psykologiskt välbefinnande (PWB: Ryff, 1989c) som mäter välbefinnande genom optimalt fungerande.
