Analysis Of Saltwater Intrusion And Investigations On Prevention Techniques In Coastal Aquifers

Basdurak, Berkay Nuvit 01 January 2004 (has links) (PDF)
In this study the saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers is briefly described and the prevention techniques are discussed. By using two computer models SWI and SHARP, the movement of freshwater and saltwater is analyzed on hypothetical cases and on one real aquifer in Marmaris in the coast of Mediterranean Region. Artificial recharge and subsurface barrier techniques are applied to hypothetical cases as means of controling the saltwater intrusion. The performance of strip recharge and subsurface barrier in reducing the salt water intrusion is analyzed by simulation of the groundwater flow with the codes mentioned above. The results obtained are compared with each other. The results of hypothetical cases are relatively in good agreement. For the real aquifer the results show discrepancy that cannot be ignored.

Combining Sharp Excision and Electrocautery Dermabrasion in the Treatment of Rhinophyma

Robinson, Fulton A, Cartwright, Jake K, Dixon, Natalie R, Billington, Alicia R 07 April 2022 (has links)
Rhinophyma is a rare clinical condition that is characterized by the proliferation of sebaceous glands and underlying connective tissue of the nose. There is no standard method for the treatment of this benign condition as several techniques have been proven effective. The patient is a 79-year-old male that presents with a large rhinophyma and left-sided alar mass. He was treated operatively with the use of electrocautery dermabrasion and sharp excision. Pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative images were obtained and depict a desirable cosmetic outcome. Although they are among many effective therapies for the management of rhinophyma, electrocautery dermabrasion and sharp excision remain viable and successful options for the treatment of this condition.

Ecology of the sharp-shinned hawk (Accipiter striatus) in southern Quebec

Coleman, Joanna L. January 2001 (has links)
The reproductive performance of Sharp-shinned Hawks (Accipiter striatus) nesting in southern Quebec was studied during the 1999 and 2000 breeding seasons. In 2000, 37.5% of breeders (equal numbers of males and females) were immature, whereas none were in 1999. In 2000, clutch size and hatching success were 4.4 and 3.1 eggs per nest, respectively. Of 10 pairs monitored in 2000, six hatched at least one chick and five raised young to a bandable age. However, only three pairs successfully fledged at least one young that year, whereas all seven nests observed in 1999 did so. Unseasonable weather in 2000 may have contributed to this decrease in nesting success. / In 2000, levels of organochlorines were measured in blood samples taken from sharpshin females and their young at five of the above-mentioned 10 nests. While most compounds were not detected at all, or at least not at levels likely to affect reproduction, concentrations of DDE and PCB's in these breeding females were much higher than in female migrants previously sampled in the eastern United States or Great Lakes. Whereas global contamination of the environment appears to be the source of PCB exposure, this population may be accumulating DDE on its wintering grounds. / Habitat assessments were conducted at 12 sharpshin nests over both years of the study. Means of the variables measured (among others) were nest tree height, 15.3 m; tree density, 1052/ha; total canopy cover, 86.7%; coniferous cover, 42.95%; and distance to the nearest opening, 17.5 m. Nests were found in a range of forested habitats, but this population did not exhibit a noteworthy degree of plasticity with respect to the measured parameters. That these sharpshins tended to use structurally older stands with more deciduous cover than other populations did may reflect regional differences in habitat availability and/or in the abundance of competitors.

The transition between sharp and diffusive wetting fronts as a function of imbibing fluid properties

Aminzadeh-Goharrizi, Behdad 22 September 2010 (has links)
The efficiency of one fluid displacing another in a permeable medium depends on the pore-scale dynamics at the main wetting front. Experiments have shown that the frontal dynamics can result in two different flow regimes: a sharp and a diffuse front. In the sharp front regime, the displacing fluid occupies nearly all the pores and throats behind the main wetting front and the saturation changes abruptly. In contrast, in the diffuse front regime, pores are filled gradually at the main wetting front, and the saturation change is gradual in space. The different fronts can greatly alter the relative permeability curves, the trapping mechanisms, and the displacement efficiency. Directly measuring the sharpness of the front is difficult. Instead, here we correlate the front sharpness to saturation overshoot, which occurs for moderate to high flux vertical displacements of low density fluid by a higher density fluid in 1-D homogeneous permeable media. We hypothesize the sharpness of wetting front can be explained by competition between two different pore - filling mechanisms (called snap-off and piston-like) with the competition controlled by the velocity of the front and thus the injected flux. We conduct series of infiltration experiments to determine the saturation profile as a function of flux for seven different fluids. We find that for each fluid there is a flux (called overshoot flux) below which saturation overshoot ceases and the front is diffuse. We find that the overshoot flux depends inversely on the invading fluid’s viscosity, and shows little or no dependence on the invading fluid’s surface tension, vapor pressure, and its miscibility with water / text

Fizinio asmens investicinio portfelio formavimas ir valdymas / Formation and management of personal investment portfolio

Boreika, Paulius 26 June 2014 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Globalization processes are taking place not only in the world, but also in the financial markets; it provides many opportunities to the financial sector and thereby increases the risk. Investors gain the opportunity to choose investment vehicles that enable to direct their capital to any region in the world or business branch. Large quantities of information and professional detachment even allow people, without financial knowledge, to invest. The main objective to the investors and their advisors – income from investments. This leads to main question raised in Master Thesis, the question which also coincides with all the investors - how to manage your portfolio that the risk and reward proportion would be optimal? The goal of effective portfolio management means the division of the capital in such a way that the investor would receive good at the highest possible returns, and during the crisis, investment impairment loss would be minimal. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the portfolio theory, which is designed to explain the basic problem of the investment - how to invest the capital in order to obtain the optimal profit and risk proportion. The term investment portfolio is considered not as a set of investments, but as the structured investment vehicles, based on investor expectations and professional forecasts. Issues raised employ literary articles analyzed in the portfolio management techniques. Analysis is based on W. Sharpe and Markowitz models which... [to full text]
