3D numerical modelling and manipulation of a shoe lastGordeyeva, Olga V. January 1998 (has links)
As global competition continues to increase causing market windows to shrink and product life cycles shorten, manufacturers today can no longer function without advanced design tools. These market pressures dictate that designers must embrace new, faster and better design technologies than ever before if they are to remain competitive. This is especially true in the shoe industry with the employment of up-to-date methods of design and manufacture. The development of modem CAD/CAM systems, the availability of powerful hardware at reasonable cost and vast improvements in colour graphics capabilities have made the automation of the footwear design process feasible at low cost. All of this economically justifies the creation of a system for direct shoe last design without a prototype model last. A specific onscreen methodology of a shoe last design directly from individual anthropometric data has been proposed and evaluated. A numerical methodology for onscreen visualisation with application of a new scheme of segmentation of the last surface and further manipulation of the last elements in order to create new last styles have been developed. In order to achieve this, the principles of shaping the last, the laws governing its deformation when changing the heel height and the list of possible modifications to its shape have been defined. Five global manipulation procedures have been implemented, in particular those that relate to changing the heel height. Special software has been written to visualise the results. Experimentation has proved the validity of the approach. Lasts of similar style but with different heel heights were measured and numerically modelled to compare with computer generated and modified last models. The accuracy proved to be within the limits of practical and traditional constraints.

What the shoe foreman thinks of managementCartier, Arthur T. January 1952 (has links)
Thesis (M.S.)--Boston University / This study or survey was made in the interest of
intra-industry relations in the shoe industry by a few
individuals who feel that the position of the foreman has
changed so drastically that much of his authority has been
usurped. The problem presented itself when the question of
profits was brought to the attention of the writer. This
particular sentence stimulated the thinking behind this
survey: "PROFITS ARE OFTEN DETERMINED BY CONDITIONS BEYOND
THE CONTROL OF MANAGEMENT."
In the shoe industry, much of the profit can be eaten
away by unwise factory procedures. The individual who is
most responsible for this is the foreman. On his shoulders
rests the final decision as to the time, material, and other
factors that determine the cost of a pair of shoes. If the
factory has committed itself to the certain price range, and
the foreman cannot meet this, then in short order, the
factory is out of business. Profits in the shoe industry
are really marginal.

Os passos da modernidade: uma abordagem crítica do design de calçados / The steps of modernity: a critical aproach to the design of shoesLudmila Vieira de Oliveira 24 April 2008 (has links)
This dissertation is dedicated to the study of shoe design and, moreover, to the identification and analysis of its relationship with modernity. From this perspective, it intends to lay emphasis on the changes from the seventeenth century on, related to the shoe production and commercial organisation and structure in Europe, culminating with the emergence of a new professional - the shoe designer. In order to assist this new professional, the main objective of this dissertation is contribute to the shoe design knowledge base. A new proposal for a shoe typology is, thus, presented, in which the whole diversity of contemporary models, whose design clearly reflects the influences of modernity, can be classified.

The mode conversion of the guided wave by a welded pipe shoeLee, Jie-horn 28 August 2006 (has links)
The detection of corrosion in pipes is of major importance to the oil and chemical industries. Current methods involving point-by-point inspection are available for the detection of general wall loss associated with corrosion, but unfortunately the current methods tend to be very slow, limited to single positions, thus make the inspection of the kilometers of pipeline typically found in industrial plants virtually impossible. Ultrasonic guided waves provide an attractive solution to this problem because they can be excited at one location on the pipe and will propagate many meters along the pipe, returning echoes indicating the presence of corrosion or other pipe features.
Nevertheless such techniques still have many practical difficulties in application due to the complex characteristics of guided waves such as dispersion and mode conversion. This thesis studies guided waves influenced by the welded supports, a.k.a. pipe shoe. A research of the reflection of mode-converted guided waves from pipe shoes on pipes in the frequency range 18-32 kHz has been carried out. Measurements are made on a 6 inch bore diameter, 7.1mm wall thickness pipe. The axisymmetric symmetric T(0,1) mode is incident on the pipe shoes and the mode-converted guided waves are received in reflection. In parallel, a finite element model is used to simulate the experiments by using Ansys. Received signals are separated into single-mode with a mode extraction technique. This research reveals that when T(0,1) propagates through the pipe shoe, the energy of T(0,1) passes into the pipe shoe. The leakage phenomenon results in the complexity and misinterpretation of the echo.
