The 2326 MHZ radio continuum emission of the milky way

Jonas, Justin Leonard January 1999 (has links)
The Rhodes/HartRAO SKYMAP survey is the highest frequency (2326 MHz) and highest resolution (20 arcmin) large-area pencil-beam survey of the celestial radio continuum emission. The survey covers 67 % of the entire sky and is one of only two radio continuum surveys that cover the southern sky. These attributes make the survey eminently suitable for studying the extended radio continuum emission from the Milky Way. This thesis describes the methodology used to produce the SKYMAP survey map and presents an analysis of the galactic radio continuum emission. Mountfort (1989, PhD thesis, Rhodes University) designed and implemented the original SKYMAP observing and data reduction procedures. These original procedures have been modified and extended to accommodate instrumentation upgrades at HartRAO and take advantage of new computer technologies that have become available. A new procedure was developed to perform the merging of the ten individual target-area maps into a self-consistent combined map without discontinuities at the component map boundaries. Calibration and data quality procedures were devised and implemented in order to validate the temperature scale and pointing accuracy of the map data. The uncertainty in the relative full-beam temperature scale is estimated to be 2 % and the RMS pixel noise is less than 30 mK. The uncertainty in the zero-level of the survey map is conservatively estimated to be 80 mK. The RMS pointing accuracy is better than 1.9 arcmin. The diffuse galactic background (DGB) emission is shown to be consistent with four-arm spiral models for the Milky Way. The Gould Belt system and the galactic warp beyond the solar-circle are seen as non-symmetrical distortions in the DGB. An empirical model of the DGB was subtracted from the 2326 MHz map data in order to accentuate faint, extended radio sources. A new technique was devised to discriminate between thermal and non-thermal radio continuum emission on the basis of FIR/radio flux ratios. This procedure was used to reduce the source confusion near the galactic plane. 42 new shell-like radio sources with angular diameters ranging from 1.6 deg to 26 deg are identified in the SKYMAP 2326 MHz map. These sources are probably large-diameter supernova remnants (SNRs) that partially redress the incompleteness in existing SNR catalogues caused by limited surface brightness selection effects. The shells of some of these faint, extended sources are incomplete towards high-latitudes. This morphology suggests that these objects are breaking out of the galactic disk and are releasing hot gas into the halo. There is no evidence for linear worm- and chimney-like features in the non-thermal galactic emission. The spectral index of the diffuse galactic emission is calculated to be beta = 2.72 +/- 0.18 between 408 MHz and 2326 MHz and beta = 2.95 +/- 0.08 between 2326 MHz and 31 GHz, confirming previous work showing that the synchrotron spectrum steepens with increasing frequency. The high frequency spectral index is used to estimate upper limits on the galactic synchrotron foreground contamination of cosmic microwave background radiation measurements. The high-latitude 2326 MHz galactic emission is shown to correlate weakly with the far-infrared galactic cirrus clouds. This correlation is due to thermal free-free radio emission from extended, low-density HII regions associated with the cirrus dust. The RMS level of this thermal signal is estimated to be 1 mK at 2326 MHz. Two further experiments that need to be performed in order to complete the SKYMAP project are discussed: (a) the region of sky near the southern equatorial pole (SEP) needs to be mapped at HartRAO to complete the coverage of the entire southern sky, and (b) independent horn telescope (broad-beam) measurements of the sky temperature are required in order to reduce the baseline uncertainties in the current SKYMAP data.

Hernández Malabrán, Felipe 05 1900 (has links)

Light, dark, and architecture

Mali, Poorva 03 February 2023 (has links)
The thesis explores the relationship of light, architecture, and humans focusing on both the mathematics of solar movement that informs the architecture and the experiential and spiritual response of human perception to it. The exploration uses the celestial realm as the inspiration and canvas that the design process was built on. The light tunnels, the design concept explored in detail, investigate the consequences of architectural form and space in combination with volumetric, reflected, dispersed, or absorbed light. The design process transforms an instrument derived from the sun dial to a living piece of architecture that responds to human perception to variably objectify and reveal spiritual conditions of the celestial sky. / Master of Architecture / The thesis explores the relationship of light, architecture and humans focusing on both the movement of the sun and the perceptive response to it. The Pilgrimage of the 'temples of inexplicable' is a complex with several pavilions that engage with light and dark to create a space that allows the coexistence of spirituality and science in harmony. The thesis looks into one pavilion in detail – The light tunnels that investigate the movement of the light source, its nature as an object or revelation, and the human perception. The design process transforms an instrument to a living piece of architecture.

Performing Jewish Rituals on Stage: The Case of S. An-sky’s The Dybbuk: or Between Two Worlds

Marcus, Noah 27 September 2022 (has links)
This thesis examines the intersection between the performance of Jewish religious rituals in real life and their performance in theatre, as exemplified through a case study of S. An-sky’s seminal and often adapted play: The Dybbuk: Or Between Two Worlds. In addition to An-sky’s original text, this thesis takes Tony Kushner’s 1997 adaptation A Dybbuk: or Between Two Worlds and Soulpepper Theatre’s 2015 adaptation The Dybbuk, Or Between Two Worlds as its subjects. By utilizing dramaturgical analysis, performance analysis, and historiography, this thesis names, describes, and analyzes the major techniques used to translate the performance of Jewish rituals from the real world onto the stage as well as the dramaturgical and performative effects these rituals enact. This analysis is further contextualized through the theoretical lenses of adaptation, translation, and Jewish Studies. This thesis examines not only how a playwright and/or director translates the performance of Jewish rituals onto the stage and how those rituals impact the construction and performance of the text, but also how this performative practice can both introduce and reinforce Jewish cultural and religious knowledge in contemporary North American society.

Between Earth and Sky

Cosco, Phillip Anthony 27 March 2003 (has links)
The thesis is about primitive mass that rises from the earth to recieve modern structure and in doing so it becomes path, center, and boundary. Its thickness is carved, antropomorphic, creating place for structure and light. The modern structure, is a place where science dwells, it is infinite boundless, it allows precision to be born. The proposition suggests that when the two come together there is a moment when the construction changes, and it is in this moment an architectural event should occur. The project is an astronomical observatory for a small college physics department in central West Virginia, it makes a place for the observatory tower, a classroom, conference / exhibit hall, restrooms and office space, the in-between becomes a primitive observatory plaza marking the winter and summer solstice as well as the equinox sunrise, it is a place for gathering and teaching. The secondary focus is that of process, many discoveries were made during the beginning phase of the work, which will be revieled along with the project. / Master of Architecture

Caracterização citogenética molecular de cromossomos marcadores extranumerários / Molecular Cytogenetic Characterization of Supernumerary Marker Chromosomes

Laus, Ana Carolina 21 May 2008 (has links)
Chromosomal rearrangements involving supernumerary marker chromosomes are frequently found in patients with mental retardation, growth defects and malformations. The genetic materials presented in trisomy/tetrasomy are responsible by distinct and unspecific clinical symptoms. The phenotypic variation is related mainly to different mosaicismo degrees, genetic content and chromosomal origin. Thus, the characterization of marker chromosomes is important to determine the prognosis and genetic counseling to the patients and their families. The aim of this study was to analyze supernumerary marker chromosomes using conventional and molecular cytogenetic techniques. Eleven patients were included in this study, all assisted in Medical Genetic Division of Clinical Hospital of School of Medicine of Ribeirao Preto USP. They all presented supernumerary marker chromosomes detected by GTG band. The origin and composition were determined using Spectral Karyotype (SKY) and Fluorescence in situ Hybridization (FISH) techniques. To ten patients, the origin and composition were determined. Two patients presented inverted duplications of chromosome 15, and their karyotype were defined as 47,XY,+idic(15)(pterq15::q15pter) and 47,XX,+idic(15)(pterq21::q21p11.2), one patient had a derivative chromosome 15, with karyotype 47,XX,+der(15)(pterq21), and two patients, a girl and her father, had two derivatives chromosomes 15, with karyotypes 48,XX,+2der(15)(pterq12) e 48,XY,+2der(15)(pterq12), respectively. Two patients presented derivative chromosomes 9 and their karyotype were defined as 47,XX,+der(9)(pterq21) and 47,XX,+der(9)(pterq32), and one patient had a derivative chromosome 4, with karyotype 47,XX,+der(4)(p16q21)[9]/48,XX,+der(4)(p16q21),+mar[91]. One patient had a translocated marker chromosome, derivative 22, [47,XY,+der(22)t(11;22)(q25:q11.2)] and another patient had a translocated marker chromosome, derivative 15 [47,XY,+der(15)t(15;16)(q13;q13)]. In one case, was not possible to define the origin and composition of the marker chromosome using SKY and FISH techniques. A large phenotypic variation is associated with supernumerary marker chromosomes and many times, the prognosis and genetic counseling is difficult to determine. The molecular cytogenetic techniques are important tools to its characterization, during prenatal diagnosis or to a family with an affected person, helping the genetic mapping of each region to a future correlation karyotype-genotype-phenotype.
