Grid Fault Ride-through Capability of Voltage-Controlled Inverters for Distributed Generation ApplicationsPiya, Prasanna 06 May 2017 (has links)
The increased integration of distributed and renewable energy resources (DERs) has motivated the evolution of new standards in grid interconnection requirements. New standards have the requirement for the DERs to remain connected during the transient grid fault conditions and to offer support to the grid. This requirement is known as the fault ride-through (FRT) capability of the inverter-based DERs and is an increasingly important issue. This dissertation presents the FRT capability of the DERs that employ a voltage control strategy in their control systems. The voltage control strategy is increasingly replacing the current control strategy in the DERs due to the fact that it provides direct voltage support. However, the voltage control technique limits the ability of direct control over the inverter current. This presents a challenge in addressing the FRT capability where the problem is originally formulated in terms of the current control. This dissertation develops a solution for the FRT capability of inverters that use a voltage control strategy. The proposed controller enables the inverter to ride through the grid faults and support the grid by injecting a balanced current with completely controlled real and reactive power components. The proposed controller is flexible and can be used in connection with various voltage control strategies. Stability analysis of the proposed control structure is performed based on a new linear time-invariant model developed in this dissertation. This model significantly facilitates the stability and design of such control loops. Detailed simulation, real-time and experimental results are presented to evaluate the performance of the proposed control strategy in various operating conditions. Desirable transient and steady-state responses of the proposed controller are observed. Furthermore, the newly established German and Danish grid fault ride-through standards are implemented in this research as two application examples and the effectiveness of the dissertation results are illustrated in the context of those two examples.

Modeling and Analysis of a PV Grid-Tied Smart Inverter's Support FunctionsJohnson, Benjamin Anders 01 May 2013 (has links)
The general trends in the past decade of increasing solar cell efficiency, decreasing PV system costs, increasing government incentive programs, and several other factors have all combined synergistically to reduce the barriers of entry for PV systems to enter the market and expand their contribution to the global energy portfolio. The shortcomings of current inverter functions which link PV systems to the utility network are becoming transparent as PV penetration levels continue to increase. The solution this thesis proposes is an approach to control the inverters real and reactive power output to help eliminate the problems associated with PV systems at their origin and in addition provide the grid with ancillary support services. The design, modeling, and analysis of a grid-tied PV system was performed in the PSCAD software simulation environment. Results indicate that in the presence of grid disturbances the smart inverter can react dynamically to help restore the power system back to its normal state. A harmonic analysis was also performed indicating the inverter under study met the applicable power quality standards for distributed energy resources.

abstract: With the increasing penetration of Photovoltaic inverters, there is a necessity for recent PV inverters to have smart grid support features for increased power system reliability and security. The grid support features include voltage support, active and reactive power control. These support features mean that inverters should have bidirectional power and communication capabilities. The inverter should be able to communicate with the grid utility and other inverter modules.
This thesis studies the real time simulation of smart inverters using PLECS Real Time Box. The real time simulation is performed as a Controller Hardware in the Loop (CHIL) real time simulation. In this thesis, the power stage of the smart inverter is emulated in the PLECS Real Time Box and the controller stage of the inverter is programmed in the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) connected to the real time box. The power stage emulated in the real time box and the controller implemented in the DSP form a closed loop smart inverter.
This smart inverter, with power stage and controller together, is then connected to an OPAL-RT simulator which emulates the power distribution system of the Arizona State University Poly campus. The smart inverter then sends and receives commands to supply power and support the grid. The results of the smart inverter with the PLECS Real time box and the smart inverter connected to an emulated distribution system are discussed under various conditions based on the commands received by the smart inverter. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Electrical Engineering 2017
