Examining the impact of Media Content, Emotions, and Mental Imagery Visualization on Pre-Trip Place AttachmentJanuary 2013 (has links)
abstract: Numerous studies have examined the attachments individuals have to the places they visit, and that those attachments are formed through experiencing a place in person. This study is unique in that it examines pre-trip place attachment formation via the use of mobile technology and social media. It proposes that media experienced through the use of a participant's smartphone can foster the development of positive emotions, which in turn, facilitates greater mental imagery processing that ultimately influences pre-trip place attachment formation. An experimental design was constructed to examine how text and video on a destination's Facebook page influences an individual's emotions, mental imagery, and subsequently attachment to that destination. Specifically, a 2 (narrative text vs. descriptive text) x 2 (short, fast-paced video vs. long, slow-paced video) between-subjects design was used. A total of 343 usable participant responses were included in the analysis. The data was then analyzed through a two-step process using structural equation modeling. Results revealed no significant influence of textual or video media on emotions although the choice in text has a greater influence on emotions than choice in video. Additionally, emotions had a significant impact on mental imagery. Finally, mental imagery processing had a significant impact on only the social bonding dimension of place attachment. In conclusion, while media had no significant impact on emotions, the effect of previous traveler's retelling of personal accounts on the emotions of potential travelers researching a destination should be examined more closely. Further, the study participants had no prior experience with the destination, yet emotions influenced mental imagery, which also influenced social bonding. Context. For a user to gain access to a protected resource on the web,the user needs to get authenticated. There are different forms of authenti-cation, among the most common is the ordinary user name and passwordscheme. This scheme is very simple to implement, but it suffers from se-curity vulnerabilities and requires the user to remember passwords to allaccounts. Two-factor authentication could be one answer to increase thesecurity where one-factor authentication is lacking. However, depending onthe implementation, two-factor authentication could still be insecure andeven more user-unfriendly. Objectives. In this study, we investigate if our implementation of two-factor authentication has any advantages to existing ones. Our goal is topresent a secure and user-friendly authentication scheme that uses bothpassword and fingerprint. Methods. A literary study was performed in order to collect informationon similar systems and subjects in order to build a comparable authentica-tion model. The collected information and proposed model was then usedto analyze possible drawbacks and to answer research questions. Results. Results derive from the comparison between our proposed modeland two Google two-factor authentication solutions. Conclusions. The results yielded from the literary study and analysisshows that our proposed model does not add any advantages concerningsecurity. Our model does however provide better ease of use in comparisonwith similar two-factor authentication solutions from Google.

Kontext. Allt fler vardagliga problem kan idag uträttas via smartphones. I takt med ett alltmer utbrett användande ökar utvecklingen av applikationer till Androids operativsystem. En avgörande faktor blir därmed säkerhetsaspekten, framförallt gällande den data som skickas i kommunikationen med internet (nätkommunikationen). Mål. Målet och syftet med denna uppsats är att försöka påvisa hur säkert olika Android-applikationers nätkommunikation är i dagsläget. Metod. Uppsatsen använder sig av två metoder ett experimentellt och en analysdel. Den experimentella metoden används för att utföra ett antal tester i ett experiment. För att genomföra undersökningen används en Android emulator där trafiken avlyssnas medan olika applikationer används. Undersökningen bygger på tio applikationer som testas på två olika versioner av Android systemet. Totalt blir det 20 tester. Därefter övergår projektet till en analysdel där resultatet av testerna ska analyseras manuellt med ett analyseringsverktyg för nätverkstrafik. Resultat. Resultatet av experimentet och analysen visar att det finns skillnader på säkerheten bland applikationerna och även mellan vilken Android version som används. Slutsats. Av de testade applikationerna fanns en säkerhetsrisk bland vissa. Orsak är att de använde sig av osäkra överföringsprotokoll. There is an app for everything, however, not every app delivers what the user expects. As a student, I had many tasks which were routine such as keeping track of the courses, events, exams or to dine. I wished for a mobile application that would ease the burden these routines create. While there was an LNU mobile application, it failed to address some of the needs I had as a student. Consequently, I felt it lacked the tools I needed to be successful. For instance, absent features such as a personalized academic calendar prevented me from finding relevant information about the location and times of classes. On our way to improve the functionality of the current solution, we started with surveying other students and collecting their thoughts about the LNU mobile app. Next, we performed market research in order to understand how other universities handled these needs. Finally, we combined the findings and built a prototype for students to test. The prototype managed to achieve higher rates of student satisfaction and will serve as the basis for future development.

Previous issue date: 2017-02-24 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The agricultural aptitude maps assist farmers by providing subsidies for decision-making; however, several maps are available only on paper and digital media, requiring the use of tools such as tracks, compasses, GPS, and computers to use it. With the advancement of information technology and the appearance of smartphones, these devices have been receiving attention for the development of mobile GIS due to its high processing power and mounted sensors such as GPS. The evapotranspiration is essential for irrigation planning although making this estimate for large regions becomes costly. However, the use of satellite images and algorithms such as MOD16 makes it possible, with low cost, to estimate this variable for regional scales. The objective of this work was to develop an application for Android Smartphones that allows the user interaction with climatological water balance maps elements, assisting them in irrigation planning in the state of Pernambuco. It was used maps of soil water storage, images of MOD16 potential evaporation and rain map, for the elaboration climatological water balance maps. The performance of the MOD16 algorithm was evaluated for each mesoregion and it was found that the mesoregions of “Sertão” and “Sertão do São Francisco”, places with arid climates, obtained the best classifications. The mesoregion of the “Região Metropolitana do Recife” presented the worst classification. The application IGmap provides interaction with the ETP, ETR, ETC maps for principal state crops, water deficit and surplus. The user can collect information by clicking on any point on the map and navigate between the months of the year to check the temporal variation of the components of the water balance. Other maps can be embedded in the application, such as pest mapping, soils, production among others increases the functionality of the app. / Os mapas de aptidão agrícola auxiliam agricultores, fornecendo subsídios para tomada de decisão, no entanto a maioria desses estão disponíveis em papéis e mídias digitais, fazendo-se necessário a utilização de instrumento como trenas, bússolas, GPS e computadores para utilização do mesmo. Com o avanço das tecnologias de informação e o surgimento smartphones, esses dispositivos vem recebendo atenção para o desenvolvimento de SIG móveis, devido ao seu alto poder de processamento e sensores embarcados como o GPS. A determinação da evapotranspiração é essencial para o planejamento de irrigação e fazer essa estimativa para grandes regiões se torna onerosa. No entanto, a utilização de imagens de satélite e algoritmos como o MOD16 possibilita, sem maiores custos, a estimativa dessa variável para escalas regionais. Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho desenvolver um aplicativo para Smartphones Android que possibilite a interação de usuário com cartas dos elementos do balanço hídrico climatológico, auxiliando-os no planejamento de irrigação no estado de Pernambuco. Para isso foi utilizado cartas de capacidade de armazenamento de água no solo, imagens de evapotranspiração potencial do produto MOD16 e cartas de isoietas, para elaboração das cartas dos elementos do balanço hídrico climatológico. O desempenho do algoritmo MOD16 foi avaliado para cada mesorregião e foi constado que as mesorregiões do Sertão e Sertão do São Francisco, locais com climas mais áridos, obtiveram as melhores classificações. A mesorregião da Região Metropolitana do Recife, foi que apresentou a pior classificação. O aplicativo intitulado de IGmap, fornece interação com as cartas mensais de ETP, ETR, ETC para as principais culturas do Estado, déficit e excedente hídrico. O usuário pode coletar informações clicando em qualquer ponto do mapa, e navegar entre os meses do ano para verificar a variação temporal das componentes do balanço hídrico. Outros mapas poderão ser incorporados no aplicativo, como mapa de pragas, solos, produção entre outros aumenta a funcionalidade do mesmo.

This report describes a bachelor thesis in computer science performed at the system department within the product development unit for GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) at Ericsson in Linköping.GSM can be considered a mature technology but it is still updated with new features on a regular basis. This requires that the technology also continuously is being tested. One technique that is used to perform quality tests is called PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality). PESQ is a standardized algorithm to perform speech quality tests; it gives a score based on how a human would percept speech quality.The purpose of this thesis was to enhance the speech quality analysis process used when testing the GSM network. One goal was to analyze if it was possible to record and inject sound into a phone call and verify the possibility to execute the PESQ algorithm using a smartphone. Another goal was to develop a smartphone application to perform the described tasks.In order to do so an application for Android was developed. The development process included an investigation whether the Android platform supplies the functionality required. The investiga-tion showed that no general solution for recording and injecting audio into a phone call could be found. Recording was possible on some smartphones, but the characteristics of the recorded audio were not as desired. No solution for injecting audio into a phone call could be found for any of the tested smartphones.However, even though no solution for recording and injecting was found, an application was developed. The application was decided to be more of a proof of concept on how an application of this kind would work. It would also be a good foundation for future development. Suggested future work in order to integrate the application into the existing testing environment is to find alternative solutions for recording and injecting, maybe with the help of smartphone manu-facturers.

Reporting application at SDC : A low bandwidth mobile applicationVesterlund, Elias January 2014 (has links)
The objective of the report is to investigate which kind of mobile appli-cation, native, hybrid or web, that is the best regarding cross-platform support compared to development cost. As there are little information regarding pure web applications for mobile devices a prototype will be constructed to give light in this technology. The prototype should an-swer the questions if it can save a year's usage in the cell phones memory, if it is possible to have support for 100 percent of Sweden area and generally if this approach would suffice. There are also some physi-cal restrictions on the web application. A login must be done in less than 5 second, fetch TOs( timber orders) within 10 seconds, report a row within 5 seconds. This in a 2G environment, in Telias network, which is mostly likely to be used in the forest. To easily test the application the CPN-tools(colored petri nets) are used to graphically model the applica-tion and simulations are thereafter done to get a scenes how the applica-tion would perform during many years of usage. To construct have been constructed with the aid of open web technologies as HTML5,CSS4, JavaScript, JQuery and JQuery mobile. The prototype used asynchronies communication to mask loss of coverage and long loading times. It also utilized HTML5 localStorage to save TOs and employer information so that minimize the need for fetching information many times. The proto-type application cannot be used in 100 percent of Sweden's area because the cellular coverage is not present in big areas in the north of Sweden. Therefore information is stored locally but after the pre fetched work orders are completed new work orders must be fetched where cellular coverage is present. The application still have a big usage area and as most wood products comes from the middle of Sweden this cannot be seen as a big problem. To save a year's usage of data on the other hand is not a problem at all. About 10 percent of the available 5 MB of storage in the HTML5 localStorage would be needed. It did also with ease handle the time limitations. As a conclusion the need for a web applica-tion, for SDC, is only present if both IVR and web reporting through a computer is if these services are liquidated in the long run. There are a bit more work with creating a hybrid native/web application using third-party applications but it in turns would give a better coverage area as that kind of application can pre download all TOs and employers ignoring any limitations in storage. This is not possible to do as a pure web application can't be run in the background on the phone.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 2 billion people in the world will be aged 60 and over by the year 2050. Along with the aging process, there will be declination of sensory, physical and cognitive factors. Vision impairment is a worldwide problem faced by people of all ages. The usage of smartphones has escalated exponentially. Smartphones are now equipped with features like text to speech converters, speech interpreters, voice guided navigation, and intelligent assistants. Appropriately designed, these can be valuable tools for the visually impaired. However, despite the advanced accessibility implemented in the smartphones, the elderly still seems to prefer ordinary phones which have physical buttons. The aim of this thesis was twofold; (1) to identify factors hindering the elderly and their use of smartphones, and (2) to develop smartphone interfaces to improve accessibility. Two Android applications were developed in this thesis. The Magnifier is a magnification tool for physical objects and text. EyesFree is a text to speech service that reads out the screen content to the user. The requirements for the apps were elicited by studying existing applications and also by interviewing potential users. EyesFree and Magnifier were evaluated using the think aloud protocol method and the results show that they are useful applications for the visually impaired. The Android operating system provides a number of accessibility features and services to help the users with different abilities to navigate the device easily. Paradoxically, these features are quite difficult to use, for example, they are not easily launched and closed. The meta application and user interface of EyesFree exemplifies how users can access the internal features of the OS such as the speech services more effectively.

Development of a Human Activity Recognition System Using Inertial Measurement Unit Sensors on a SmartphoneTundo, Marco D. January 2014 (has links)
Monitoring an individual’s mobility with a modern smartphone can have a profound impact on rehabilitation in the community.
The thesis objective was to develop and evaluate a third-generation Wearable Mobility Monitoring System (WMMS) that uses features from inertial measurement units to categorize activities and determine user changes-of-state in daily living environments. A custom suite of MATLAB® software tools were developed to assess the previous WMMS iteration and aid in third-generation WMMS algorithm construction and evaluation.
A rotation matrix was developed to orient smartphone accelerometer components to any three-dimensional reference, to improve accelerometer-based activity identification. A quaternion-based rotation matrix was constructed from an axis-angle pair, produced via algebraic manipulations of acceleration components in the device’s body-fixed reference frame.
The third-generation WMMS (WMMS3) evaluation was performed on fifteen able-bodied participants. A BlackBerry Z10 smartphone was placed at a participant’s pelvis, and the device was corrected in orientation. Acceleration due to gravity and applied linear acceleration signals on a BlackBerry Z10 were then used to calculate features that classify activity states through a decision tree classifier. The software tools were then used for offline data manipulation, feature generation, and activity state prediction.
Three prediction sets were conducted. The first set considered a “phone orientation independent” mobility assessment of a person’s mobile state. The second set differentiated immobility as sit, stand, or lie. The third prediction set added walking, climbing stairs, and small standing movements classification. Sensitivities, specificities and -Scores for activity categorization and changes-of-state were calculated.
The mobile versus immobile prediction set had a sensitivity of 93% and specificity of 97%, while the second prediction set had a sensitivity of 86% and specificity of 97%. For the third prediction set, the sensitivity and specificity decreased to 84% and 95% respectively, which still represented an increase from 56% and 88% found in the previous WMMS.
The third-generation WMMS algorithm was shown to perform better than the previous version in both categorization and change-of-state determination, and can be used for rehabilitation purposes where mobility monitoring is required.

Providers' Acceptance of Smartphone Applications as a Supportive Strategy for Adolescent AsthmaCouch, Heather Christine, Couch, Heather Christine January 2017 (has links)
US asthma prevalence increased by five million in the last decade and health care spending for the disease increased from $53 billion to $56 billion. Children are more likely than adults to have an asthma attack and its estimated that 1-in-10 youth has asthma. Despite initiatives to promote adherence to practice guidelines, childhood asthma emergency room) visits, and hospitalizations remain steady while the number of asthma deaths have increased over a 17-year period. Preliminary studies find the majority of adolescents prefer smartphones as a means of education and guidance. A modified Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) survey was comprised of 15 statements that explored providers' acceptance of smartphone applications (apps) as an adjunct strategy for management of asthma among adolescents in the outpatient setting. Current insight in adolescent asthma demonstrates multifaceted disparities in care stemming from biological and developmental transitions unique to adolescents. The quantitative, descriptive design of the project assessed two factors integral to the TAM related to provider acceptance and perception: 1) Perceived use (PU), and 2) Perceived ease of use (PEU). The survey sample consisted of 18 providers. Overwhelmingly, the majority of providers surveyed favored use of a smartphone app for adolescent asthma and believed apps had the potential to improve the quality of adolescent asthma management. Most participants agreed; smartphone apps might help accomplish benchmarks for adolescent asthma management. Numerous studies demonstrate adolescents’ preference for technological interventions for self-management of their asthma symptoms. The survey results reinforce the willingness of providers to accept asthma smartphone apps as a potential adjunct management strategy for adolescent asthma. Additional studies involving providers are required to further explore provider attitudes of acceptance and rejection relating to smartphone apps for chronic health conditions.
