Acoustic phase measurements from volume scatter in the ocean

Huston, Robert Delmar 12 November 2014 (has links)
A primary goal of this thesis has been to demonstrate that stable, useful measurements of the orientation of the acoustic signal vector as a function of range and time can be obtained from ocean backscatter, and that this orientation, or acoustic phase, can be related to the local sound speed distribution. Such a measurement is quite distinct from the related problem of detecting the rate of phase change, which forms the basis of Doppler technology. Doppler measurements can be made using echoes from a single point, or a sparsely distributed set of targets. Consistent and useful measurement of absolute phase, is inherently more difficult, since it depends upon the positions of individual scatterers, which are normally random and sparse relative to the acoustic wavelength. / Graduate

Os resultados mostraram-se promissores para a continuidade de novos testes / Abstract: In the treatment of Acute Lung Injury (ALI) the use of the mechanical ventilation is mandatory; here the increase of pulmonary elastance occurs forcing the use of higher pressures to favor ventilation. In the last three decades it became evident that the use of high pressures in the mechanical ventilation may increase or start a pulmonary injury, so-called Ventilation Induced Lung Injury (VILI). The objective of this study is to use sound waves to promote the aperture of the collapsed airways, avoiding this way the use of high pressures. Three experimental models to be used with a setup designed to insufflate small animals (rodents), have been developed to obtain pulmonary mechanical measurements able to demonstrate through pressure volume (P-V) curves the alveolar recruitment moments. The first one evaluated the influence of the thoracic wall over the respiratory system by means of ventilatory mechanical measurements. In the second model an induced ALI using the herbicide Paraquat was developed, here the airway collapse was demonstrated and the behavior of the obtained pressure-volume curves were corroborated with the one described in the literature. The third model analyzed the behavior of P-V curves following the application of sound waves to previously collapsed airways, with the purpose to verify the occurrence or alveolar recruitment due to the presence of sound. The three models proved to be promising to the continuity of new tests / Doutorado / Telecomunicações e Telemática / Doutora em Engenharia Elétrica
