The winter urban heat island (UHI) has been suggested to reduce snowfall downwind of city centers due to localized energy and moisture flux variations, but previous research lacks spatial detail since it is primarily based on sparse surface observations. This project utilizes high-resolution radar data for twelve snow-only events, occurring from 1995-2008 and passing over the Minneapolis – St. Paul (MSP) urban area, to quantify the change in radar reflectivity values downwind of the city. Results show that five of the twelve snowfall events evaluated for the MSP urban area did not significantly decrease in summed decibel (dBZ) values downwind of the city center, and four of these events occurred on a day with a zero to positive urban-rural temperature gradient. Analysis of related atmospheric variables on these days suggest that atmospheric instability and convergence may play a critical role in urban snowfall modification.

I have long been interested in Paul's writings, his various doctrinal viewpoints, and the manner in which he dealt with problems as they developed during his ministry. Certainly, the Corinthian Churoh had its problems, and they were eerious problems. Not the least of these was the matter of a faotious spirit whioh seemed to prevail among the members and whioh was keeping the oongregation from full effectiveness in its witness and work for Jesus Christ. What were the background oonditions out of whioh this Corinthian Churoh oame forth? What types of people comprised this congregation? How and why did these various problems develop? What did Paul do to meet the need? What was his answer to the problems? What does all of this say to us today? These are but a few of the questions with which I am concerned and with whioh I shall deal in this study.

This study addresses the question of formative early Christian preaching and teaching. Unlike previous approaches, I eschew synthesis across a broad range and focus instead on the earliest extant Christian source: the letters of Paul. My method draws on ancient communication practices, primarily represented in ancient rhetoric, wherein communicators rely on knowledge they presume their interlocutors to possess. Passages are analyzed according to the type of appeal to Paul's initial teaching: (1) explicit reminders of previous teaching, (2) direct appeals to knowledge not explicitly linked to previous teaching, and (3) indirect appeals to knowledge about practices, beliefs, conventions, etc. The reconstruction focuses on 1 Thessalonians, 1 Corinthians and Romans. 1 Thessalonians and 1 Corinthians represent neophyte and well-established Pauline communities, respectively, while Romans is of interest because it represents non-Pauline believers. I proceed with a comparative analysis of 1 Thessalonians and 1 Corinthians. Chapter 4 lays out the rhetorical situation for these letters while chapters 5-7 investigate the three types of appeal respectively, each closing with a comparison of similar material in each letter. Chapter 8 summarizes and concludes this discussion, providing the basis for my subsequent analysis of Romans. Finally, I compare the picture from the Thessalonian and Corinthian communities with Paul's letter to the Romans (chapter 9). Topics he expects his Roman audience to know indicate points of expected congruence between Paul's own teaching and that of others. By contrast, topics that receive significant expansion in Romans suggest perceived potential for conflict. In this dissertation I identify consistent elements of early Christian instruction, ranging from Christology to apocalyptic cosmology, while also noting possible conflict. My approach places the reconstruction of early Christian teaching on firmer methodological footing than previous attempts have done and offers a rhetorically sensitive account of the teaching and how it was used.

A investigação da Terra através da gravimetria implica um grande número de informações sobre o seu interior em diferentes escalas de observação. O presente estudo considerou pesquisas anteriormente realizadas na área da Zona de Fratura São Paulo (ZFSP) e Arquipélago São Pedro e São Paulo (ASPSP), no Oceano Atlântico Equatorial, cujos dados geoquímicos e petrológicos apontam a presença de uma anomalia térmica. Nesta área alguns levantamentos geofísicos já foram realizados, mas nada que contribuísse de forma significativa através de dados gravimétricos. O objetivo principal deste trabalho é a caracterização gravimétrica da Zona de Fratura São Paulo através de dados de gravidade, anomalia ar livre, anomalia bouguer, tensor gradiente da gravidade e altura geoidal residual. Como objetivo secundário, procurou-se a expressão desta anomalia térmica no campo geopotencial. Entretanto, os resultados obtidos indicam que o efeito da batimetria sobre este dados deve ser levado em consideração. Uma vez que área de estudo está localizada na porção equatorial da dorsal mesoatlântica e o processo de compensação isostática nesta área está influenciando os valores da gravidade no local. Sendo, portanto, necessária a confluência de outros métodos geofísicos para detectar a expressão desta anomalia térmica. / The investigation of the Earth by gravity implies a lot of information about the interior at different scales of observation. This study considered research previously conducted in the area of St. Paul Fracture Zone (ZFSP) Archipelago and St Peter and St Paul (ASPSP), the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, whose petrological and geochemical data indicate the presence of a thermal anomaly. In this area some geophysical surveys have been conducted, but nothing that would contribute significantly by gravity data. The main objective of this work is the characterization of gravimetric St. Paul Fracture Zone by gravity data, free air anomaly, Bouguer anomaly, the gravity gradient tensor and residual geoid height. As a secondary objective, have sought the expression of this thermal anomaly in the field geopotential. However, the results indicate that the effect of bathymetry on this data should be taken into consideration. Since the study area is located in the equatorial portion of the mid-ridge atlantic and the process of isostatic compensation in this area is influencing the gravity values at the site. Therefore required the confluence of other geophysical methods to detect the expression of this thermal anomaly.
