The same opinion was also accepted in the High School National Parameters in 1998. This fact took me to carry out a research here described in which I investigate if and how High School students solve problematic situations that involve standard of generalization. It was elaborated five activities to collect data and one of them was based on a research done by Lesley Lee. The other ones were created and analyzed based on authors such as John Mason, Vale & Pimentel and Fiorentini, Miorin and Miguel. Those activities were applied during two sessions to nine High School students of the first three grades of state school in the interior of São Paulo, near Campinas. The final results drew the conclusion that although the students alleged they have never worked with that ind of activity before, not only they solved them but also used a lot of strategies to solve them / Vários pesquisadores de Educação Matemática têm enfatizado a importância do trabalho com a observação e generalização de padrão no desenvolvimento do pensamento algébrico, opinião essa assumida também nos Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais do Ensino Fundamental de 1998. Esse fato me levou a realizar a pesquisa aqui descrita, onde investiguei se e como alunos do Ensino Médio resolvem situações problemas que envolvem generalização de padrões. Para a coleta de dados elaborei cinco atividades, uma delas baseada em pesquisa realizada por Lesley Lee e as demais foram criadas e analisadas tendo como referência trabalhos dos autores Jonh Mason, Vale & Pimentel e Fiorentini, Miorin e Miguel. Essas atividades foram aplicadas durante duas sessões a nove alunos pertencentes às três séries do ensino médio de uma Escola Estadual do interior de São Paulo, próxima a Campinas. Os resultados obtidos levaram a concluir que os alunos embora tenham alegado não ter trabalhado com aquele tipo de atividade antes, não só as resolveram como empregaram várias estratégias
