Works councils : a case study

The case study features an industrial relations problem in 1977/78 in an American-owned manufacturing company in South-Eastorn England. There is a union recognition issue which is tackled by mounting a major programme of OD leading to the provision of a company constitution featuring a system of multi-level policy making councils. The system was then monitored for six years. In general, the predicted outcomes were realised however, there were two unpredicted by-products of the programme: - those involved in the original dispute (blue collar manufacturing employees) voluntarily withdrew from the union despite there being provision for union involvement in the Constitution; - it was found that the desire for a system of representative participation was not universal among all employees. These findings - both the predicted and the unpredicted - are discussed and interpreted. It is the second unpredicted by-product - representative participation's lack of universal appeal - which provides the most important outcome from the standpoint of theory development, on the place of constitutions in organization design. This leads to the derivation of limiting conditions for their application in Section 3.

Cohomology for multicontrolled stratified spaces

In this thesis an extension of the classical intersection cohomology of Goresky and MacPherson, which we call multiperverse cohomology, is defined for a certain class of depth 1 controlled stratified spaces, which we call multicontrolled stratified spaces. These spaces are spaces with singularities -- this being their controlled structure -- with additional multicontrol data. Multiperverse cohomology is constructed using a cochain complex of tau-multiperverse forms, defined for each case tau of a parameter called a multiperversity. For the spaces that we consider these multiperversities, forming a lattice M, extend the general perversities of intersection cohomology. Multicontrolled stratified spaces generalise the structure of (the compactifications of) Q-rank 1 locally symmetric spaces. In this setting multiperverse cohomology generalises some of the aspects of the weighted cohomology of Harder, Goresky and MacPherson. We define two special cases of multicontrolled stratified spaces: the product-type case, and the flat-type case. In these cases we can calculate the multiperverse cohomology directly for cones and cylinders, this yielding the local calculation at a singular stratum of a multicontrolled space. Further, we obtain extensions of the usual Mayer-Vietoris sequences, as well as a partial Kunneth Theorem. Using the concept a dual multiperversity we are able to obtain a version of Poincare duality for multiperverse cohomology for both the flat-type and the product-type case. For this Poincare duality there exist self-dual multiperversities in certain cases, such as for non-Witt spaces, where there are no self-dual perversities. For certain cusps, called double-product cusps, which are naturally compactified to multicontrolled spaces, the multiperverse cohomology of the compactification of the double-product cusp for a certain multiperversity is equal to the L2-cohomology, analytically defined, for certain doubly-warped metrics.

The F-domination number γ F(G) of a graph G is the minimum number of red vertices of G in a red-blue coloring of the vertices of G such that every blue vertex v of G belongs to a copy of F rooted at v. In this paper we investigate the F-domination number for all 2-stratified graphs F of order n≤3 rooted at a blue vertex.

Identity development of people with learning difficulties through the recognition of work

This thesis examines the development of identity of people with learning difficulties. It concentrates on an aspect which has hitherto not received significant attention, that is the importance of recognition of work in the developmental process. In order to do this the thesis defines work in a particular way, based on the work of E Jaques. It defines work in terms of the decision making process which leads to an external transformation of the world. It is the recognition of this transformation by another person which affirms the actor and enhances a sense of self. For this recognition to be effective, i.e. help in the development of identity, the thesis argues that it is critical to understand the way in which a person constructs their world and links intention with action. A general model is offered to describe this process whereby the person moves from a subjective construction of the world (a world of subjective discontinuity) to one which can be understood by others (interactive discontinuity). Although the model can be applied generally the thesis examines problems faced by people with learning difficulties due to their relatively limited intellectual ability, communication skills and not least the particular social context in which many have lived, i.e. institutional care. The thesis begins by examining the problem of the appropriate social role for such people given the current intention to allow each person to develop to their full potential. This involves a discussion of social policy leading to a consideration of institutionalisation and its alternatives. Then the model of identity development is presented in terms both general and specific to people with learning difficulties. In the context of methods of assessment a particular form of assessment, The Chart of Initiative and Independence, is considered in the light of the main thesis of identity development. Its subsequent use is then analysed and compared with other approaches in different settings. The thesis concludes by appreciating the limitations of both the model of identity development and the C.I.I, and considering complementary approaches whilst underlining the significance of recognition of work in any setting.

Plumes in stratified environments

This research presents the results of two interrelated sets of experiments examining the dynamics of plumes and fountains in two-layer and continuously stratified environments. The first study examines the evolution of an axisymmetric turbulent fountain in a two-layer stratified environment. Interacting with the interface, the fountain is observed to exhibit three regimes of flow. It may penetrate the interface but nonetheless return to the source where it spreads as a radially propagating gravity current; the return flow may be trapped at the interface where it spreads as a radially propagating intrusion or it may do both. These regimes have been classified using empirically determined regime parameters which govern the relative initial momentum of the fountain and the relative density difference of the fountain and the ambient fluid. The maximum vertical distance travelled by the fountain in a two-layer fluid has been theoretically determined by extending the theory developed for fountains in a homogeneous environment. The theory compares favourably with experimental measurements. We have also developed a theory to analyse the initial speeds of the resulting radial currents. We found that the currents exhibited two different regimes of flow. The second study presents experimental results of the generation of internal gravity waves by a turbulent buoyant plume impinging upon the interface between a uniform density layer of fluid and a linearly stratified layer. The wave field is observed and its properties measured non-intrusively using axisymmetric Schlieren. In particular, we determine the fraction of the energy flux associated with the plume at the neutral buoyancy level that is extracted by the waves. On average, this was found to be approximately 4 per cent. Within the limits of the experimental parameters, the maximum vertical displacement amplitude of waves were found to depend linearly upon the maximum penetration height of the plume beyond the neutral level. The frequency of the waves was found to lie in a narrow range relative to the buoyancy frequency. The results are used to interpret the generation of waves in the atmosphere by convective storms impinging upon the tropopause via the mechanical oscillator effect. / Applied Mathematics
