Acoplamento spin-órbita inter-subbanda em heteroestruturas semicondutoras / Inter-subband spin-orbit coupling in semiconductor heterostructures

Neste trabalho apresentamos a determinação autoconsistente da constante de interação spin-órbita em heteroestruturas com duas sub-bandas. Como recentemente proposto, ao obter o hamiltoneano de um sistema com duas sub-bandas na aproximação de massa efetiva, constata-se a presença de um acoplamento inter-subbanda que não se anula mesmo em heteroestruturas simétricas. Apresentamos aqui as deduções teóricas que levaram à proposição desse novo acoplamento e mostramos o cálculo autoconsistente da intensidade do acoplamento e a comparamos com a intensidade do acoplamento Rashba, já amplamente estudado. Discutimos o método k.p e a Aproximação da Função Envelope e mostramos a obtenção do modelo de Kane 8x8 para semicondutores com estrutura zincblende. Aplicamos o método do \"folding down\'\' ao hamiltoneano de Kane isolando o setor correspondente à banda de condução. Escrevemos dessa forma um hamiltoneano efetivo para a banda de condução no contexto de um poço quântico com uma barreira. Através da projeção desse hamiltoneano nos dois primeiros estados da parte orbital verifica-se o surgimento de um acoplamento inter-subbanda. Finalmente escrevemos o hamiltoneano efetivo 4x4 que descreve as duas primeiras subbandas de um poço quântico e obtivemos seus autoestados e autoenergias. Finalmente fizemos o cálculo autoconsistente das funções de onda e energias de um gás de elétrons em poços quânticos simples e duplos através da aproximação de Hartree e a partir desses resultados determinamos o valor da constante de acoplamento Rashba e da nova constante inter-subbanda. Entre os resultados obtidos destacam-se o controle elétrico da constante de acoplamento inter-subbanda através de um eletrodo externo e um efeito de renormalização da massa efetiva que pode chegar até 5% em algumas estruturas. / In this work we present the self-consistent determination of the spin-orbit coupling constant in heterostructure with two subbands.As recently proposed, the effective hamiltonian for the conduction band in the effective mass approximation contains an inter-subband spin-orbit coupling which is non-zero even for symmetric heterostructures. We present the theoretical derivation which leads to this proposal and show a selfconsistent determination of the coupling constant. We also compare the magnitude of the new coupling constant with the usual Rashba coupling. Starting with a discussion of the k.p method and the Envelope Function Approximation (EFA) we show the derivation of the 8x8 Kane model for semiconductors with zincblende structure. We then apply the \"folding down\'\' method, isolating the conduction band sector of the EFA hamiltonian. By projecting this hamiltonian in the first two states of the orbital part, we find an effective 4x4 hamiltonian that contains an inter-subband spin orbit coupling. The eingenvalues and eigenvectors of this hamiltonian are shown and, specializing the model for single and double quantum wells, we self-consistently determine the inter-subband and Rashba coupling constants in the Hartree approximation. The results indicate the possibility of electrical control of the coupling constant and show an effective mass renormalization effect that can be up to 5% in some cases.

Resource allocation problems in communication and control systems

Resource allocation in control and communication systems constitutes the distribution of (finite) system resources in a way that achieves maximum system functionality and or cost effectiveness. Specific resource allocation problems in subband coding, Discrete Multi-tone modulation based systems and autonomous multi-agent control are addressed in this thesis. In subband coding, the number of bits used (out of a target bit budget) to code a sub- band signal are allocated in a way that minimizes the coding distortion. In Discrete Multi-tone modulation based systems, high bit rate streams are split into several parallel lower rate streams. These individual data streams are transmitted over different subchannels. Given a target bit rate, the goal of resource allocation is to distribute the bits among the different subchannels such that the total transmitted power is minimized. The last problem is achieving stable control of a fleet of autonomous agents by utilizing the available communication resources (such as transmitted Power and bandwidth) as effectively as possible. We present an efficient bit loading algorithm that applies to both subband coding and single-user multicarrier communication system. The goal is to effect an optimal distribution of B bits among N subchannels (subbands) to achieve a minimum transmitted power (distortion error variance) for multicarrier (subband coding) systems. All the algorithms in literature, except a few (which provides a suboptimal solution), have run times that increase with B. By contrast, we provide an algorithm that solves the aforementioned problems exactly and with a complexity (given by O(N log(N)),) which is dependent only on N. Bit loading in multi-user multicarrier systems not only involves the distribution of bit rates across the subchannels but also the assignment of these subchannels to different users. The motivation for studying suboptimal bit allocation is underscored by implicit and explicit claims made in some of the papers which present suboptimal bit loading algorithms, without a formal proof, that the underlying problem is NP-hard. Consequently, for no other reason than the sake of completeness, we present a proof for NP-hardness of the multiuser multicarrier bit loading problem, thereby formally justifying the search for suboptimal solutions. There has been a growing interest in the area of cooperative control of networks of mobile autonomous agents. Applications for such a set up include organization of large sensor networks, air traffic control, achieving and maintaining formations of unmanned vehicles operating under- water, air traffic control etc. As in Abel et al, our goal is to devise control laws that, require minimal information exchange between the agents and minimal knowledge on the part of each agent of the overall formation objective, are fault tolerant, scalable, and easily reconfigurable in the face of the loss or arrival of an agent, and the loss of a communication link. A major drawback of the control law proposed in Abel et al is that it assumes all agents can exchange information at will. This is fine if agents acquire each others state information through straightforward sensing. If however, state information is exchanged through broadcast commu- nication, this assumption is highly unrealistic. By modifying the control law presented in Abel et al, we devise a scheme that allows for a sharing of the resource, which is the communication channel, but also achieves the desired formation stably. Accordingly we modify the control law presented in [23] to be compatible with networks constrained by MAC protocols.

Motion Estimation Using Complex Discrete Wavelet Transform

The estimation of optical flow has become a vital research field in image sequence analysis especially in past two decades, which found applications in many fields such as stereo optics, video compression, robotics and computer vision. In this thesis, the complex wavelet based algorithm for the estimation of optical flow developed by Magarey and Kingsbury is implemented and investigated. The algorithm is based on a complex version of the discrete wavelet transform (CDWT), which analyzes an image through blocks of filtering with a set of Gabor-like kernels with different scales and orientations. The output is a hierarchy of scaled and subsampled orientation-tuned subimages. The motion estimation algorithm is based on the relationship between translations in image domain and phase shifts in CDWT domain, which is satisfied by the shiftability and interpolability property of CDWT. Optical flow is estimated by using this relationship at each scale, in a coarse-to-fine (hierarchical) manner, where information from finer scales is used to refine the estimates from coarser scales. The performance of the motion estimation algorithm is investigated with various image sequences as input and the effects of the options in the algorithm like curvature-correction, interpolation kernel between levels and some parameter values like confidence threshold iv maximum number of CDWT levels and minimum finest level of detail are also experimented and discussed. The test results show that the method is superior to other well-known algorithms in estimation accuracy, especially under high illuminance variations and additive noise.

Fixed-analysis adaptive-synthesis filter banks

Subband/Wavelet filter analysis-synthesis filters are a major component in many compression algorithms. Such compression algorithms have been applied to images, voice, and video. These algorithms have achieved high performance. Typically, the configuration for such compression algorithms involves a bank of analysis filters whose coefficients have been designed in advance to enable high quality reconstruction. The analysis system is then followed by subband quantization and decoding on the synthesis side. Decoding is performed using a corresponding set of synthesis filters and the subbands are merged together. For many years, there has been interest in improving the analysis-synthesis filters in order to achieve better coding quality. Adaptive filter banks have been explored by a number of authors where by the analysis filters and synthesis filters coefficients are changed dynamically in response to the input. A degree of performance improvement has been reported but this approach does require that the analysis system dynamically maintain synchronization with the synthesis system in order to perform reconstruction. In this thesis, we explore a variant of the adaptive filter bank idea. We will refer to this approach as fixed-analysis adaptive-synthesis filter banks. Unlike the adaptive filter banks proposed previously, there is no analysis synthesis synchronization issue involved. This implies less coder complexity and more coder flexibility. Such an approach can be compatible with existing subband wavelet encoders. The design methodology and a performance analysis are presented.

With the constant advances in technology, people are using more wireless products, such as earphones or speakers whereas many of them use Bluetooth. With the current advances in Bluetooth technology, consumers and manufacturers have a hard time keeping up with the pace. Thus, when it comes to factors such as battery drainage, CPU usage, and range there is missing knowledge. This study is conducted to find out what effect the different codecs have on these factors, by comparing the two most commonly used codecs SBC and AAC. Using a codec that has lower battery drainage whilst still having a good enough audio quality can have a positive impact on our society and environment. Needing less electricity, lessens the overall energy consumption and directly lowers the energy production. Our results indicate that there is a significant difference in CPU usage but not in battery drainage or range.

The thesis performs an analysis on visuospatial complexity of dynamic scenes, and morespecifically driving scenes in the propose of gaining a knowledge on human visual perception of the visual information present in a typical driving scene. The analysis and measurement of visual complexity is performed by utilizing two different measure modelsfor measuring visual clutter, Feature congestion clutter measure [1] and Subband entropyclutter measure[1] introduced by Rosenholtz, a cognitive science and research. The thesisrepresent the performance of the computational models on a data set consisting of sixepisodes that simulate driving scenes with different settings and combination of visualfeatures. The results of evaluating the measure models are used to introduce a formulafor measuring visual complexity of annotated images by extracting valuable informationfrom the annotated data set using Scalabel[2], an annotation web- based open source tool.
