The perceptions of head athletic trainers in NCAA Division I, II, and III member institutions toward the status of alcohol tobacco and other drug (ATOD) prevention and education policies

The status of athletic department ATOD policies has received limited attention. Few studies have examined the extent to which athletic trainers are currently involved in developing and revising their drug education and prevention policies. This study compared the perceptions of head athletic trainers from NCAA member Divisions I, II and III toward the status of their current ATOD policies and what they would ideally like to see in their athletic departments. Policy issues were related to each of the following four domains, 1) policy implementation; 2) educational programs; 3) ATOD policy enforcement; 4) athletic trainer participation in developing and evaluating ATOD policies. A web-based questionnaire was designed to collect data. Responses were collected from (353) head athletic trainers at three NCAA member institutions. Conveying ATOD policies to visiting student athletes related to the use of drugs banned by the NCAA during recruitment visits was the highest priority among HATS in three NCAA divisions. Athletic trainers from all divisions wanted to see ATOD education programs scheduled closer to athletic events when the potential for drug use could increase. Drug enforcement policies related to the consequences of testing positive for using a banned drug after a second or a third time by athletes was a high priority for Division I and III HATS. Division II trainers reported that mandatory drug testing was also a high priority. More Division I NCAA member institutions had evaluated their ATOD policies during the past year compared to Division I and III members. Participation in developing and revising athletic department and team ATOD policies was an important priority for head athletic trainers. HATS who were more involved in developing ATOD policies mentioned that they gained a better understanding of drug abuse and drug testing issues when they were part of their athletic departments' policy making process. / Graduation date: 2004

The association between public health engagement in school-based substance use prevention programs and student alcohol, cannabis, e-cigarette and cigarette use

Background: Substance use can have lifelong consequences for adolescents and the rates of substance use in Canadian adolescents are increasing. This is a serious public health issue which needs to be addressed. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of public health unit (PHU) engagement in school-based substance use prevention programs on student substance use. Methods: Data was collected from the Cannabis, Obesity, Mental health, Physical activity, Alcohol use, Smoking and Sedentary behaviour (COMPASS) study over the 2018/19 data collection year. A multi-level logistic regression was used to analyze the associations between PHU engagement and student substance use. Results: The analyses found that 70% of schools had PHU engagement in substance use prevention programs. Overall, PHU engagement made no difference on student substance use. However, when PHU engagement was divided into five levels of engagement (with zero being no engagement and five being the highest level of engagement) it was found that students from schools where PHUs solved problems jointly (level two) had statistically significantly greater odds of binge drinking, alcohol use and cannabis use. Schools were also divided into low and high-use schools for each substance. It was found that students in low-use schools had statistically significantly greater odds of binge drinking, alcohol and cannabis use with some levels of PHU engagement and students from high-use schools had statistically significantly lower odds of cannabis and cigarette use with some levels of PHU engagement compared to a similar student from a school without PHU engagement. Conclusions: Our findings show that there is opportunity for greater PHU engagement with schools in substance use prevention programming. Furthermore, it is important that PHUs are working with schools to ensure school-based substance use prevention programs are evidence-based and tailored to the specific needs and risk-levels of the students. / Thesis / Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) / The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of public health unit (PHU) engagement in school-based substance use prevention programs on student substance use. These findings highlight the importance for PHUs to consider the specific needs and risk-levels of the students and schools they are engaging with.

Culturally Tailoring a Substance Use Intervention Among Southeastern Urban American Indian and Alaska Native Youth

In the United States, post European-colonial influence and exposure to substances such as alcohol historically mark the beginning of substance use exposure and involvement among all American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people. Research findings indicate there are strong interrelationships between the origin and prevalence of substance use and U.S.-European colonization, historical trauma, forced assimilation, cultural losses, and relocation among urban AI/AN people (Burt, 1986; Clinton, Chadwick, & Bahr, 1975; Yuan et al., 2010). In an historical sense, the unsuccessful attempts of relocating AI/AN people to urban areas place the future generations of urban AI/AN youth at risk for substance use, health conditions, and health disparities. Nationally, incident rates of substance use among urban AI/AN populations ages 12 and over is rising steadily, two to three folds higher than other ethnicities in urban areas within states such as Florida. The overall objective of this study is to culturally tailor the evidence-based Lowe (2013) Cherokee Talking Circle Intervention for substance use prevention among Cherokee adolescents to that of an Urban Taking Circle Intervention for use among urban AI/AN adolescents in Florida.
