Examining the Mental Health of Public Housing Residents in Atlanta, Georgia

Kill, Christy 26 March 2010 (has links)
INTRODUCTION: Mental health is a component of one‘s overall health and more research needs to be conducted to understand contributing factors. An estimated 26% of people over 18 years of age suffer from a mental illness in any given year; and mental disorders are the leading cause of disability in the United States for the age group of 15 to 44. Depression is a common illness and affects more women than men and nearly 1 in 10 adults each year. AIM: Some believe that public housing has negative implications for health and this furthers research interest. This study uses secondary data collected from interview surveys and examines variables of depression, living conditions, and crime among a sample of 385 public housing residents. This research investigates the correlation, if any, between crime and mental health as well as living conditions and mental health. METHODS: Data analysis was conducted in SPSS. Descriptive statistics were conducted to examine the demographic profile of the sample. The CES-D depression scale, a valid and reliable instrument, was used as to measure mental health outcomes. Living conditions and crime variables were also scored and measured. Correlation analyses were conducted to determine associations among study variables. RESULTS: The mean age of residents was 51.19 (SD = 17.27), 94% of residents were African American, and 73% were female. Approximately 65% of residents were not depressed, 55% living in normal living conditions, and 71% had a low fear of crime. There was a small, but positive significant correlation among mental health, crime, and poor living conditions. CONCLUSION: Advanced analyses of survey data would help researchers gain a better sense of how public housing residents‘ mental health outcomes are impacted by their surroundings.

Substandardní lexikum částí obličeje ve francouzštině a jeho české ekvivalenty: argotologický a lexikografický úhel pohledu / Substandard lexicon related to the face in French and its Czech equivalents: argotological and lexicographical point of view

Vojáčková, Magdalena January 2022 (has links)
The thesis is concerned with the substandard expressions of parts of the face in the French language, specifically with the synonyms of mouth, eyes, ears and nose. The theoretical part deals with the definition of slang in general, its history and word formation processes. The practical part presents synonyms of the given parts of the face, which are in the dictionary of slang Dictionnaire avec Bob and also introduces their occurrence in four French slang dictionaries, for example Argoji, and in four reference dictionaries, for example Le Petit Robert, where it compares their lexicographic marking. The thesis further deals with etymology of the synonyms and their Czech equivalents which examines in the parallel French-Czech corpus Intercorp. Last but not least, a questionnaire is implemented, which verifies the knowledge of the most frequent synonyms among native speakers of the French language. In conclusion, the thesis summarizes whether lexicographic marking differ from one reference dictionary to another and presents the most frequent synonyms and results of the questionnaire. Key words: lexicography, lexicographic marking, substandard French, dictionaries, face, Bob

Vilka problem finns det med förfalskade läkemedel?

Abada, Mariam January 2014 (has links)

Multiplexed, affordable, and portable platform for real time quantification of counterfeit and substandard medicines

Ho, Nga T. 21 June 2016 (has links)
The World Health Organization estimates that about 10-30% of pharmaceuticals in the world are either substandard or counterfeit. The number is even higher in the developing countries. From a public health perspective, a key contributor to the development and proliferation drug resistant strains of infections, including tuberculosis (TB), malaria and other infections that are leading killers in resource limited settings is poor quality medicines. Most of the main causes are profit driven corruption in many pharmaceutical companies, the poor manufacture and quality control, and/or the inappropriate storage conditions. Poor quality drugs lead to loss of life, create morbidity, strain the financial structure of the health system and lead to long-term drug resistance that affects us all. The current technology for screening poor quality drugs can be divided into 2 categories: the high end, precise and high cost technologies (such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography) and lower cost and qualitative technologies (such as Thin-Layered Chromatography). The high-end methods can give a precise measurement of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) concentration and the presence of impurities in the tablets, but require trained personnel, advanced machine and lab set up, not suitable for field testing where most of poor quality pharmaceuticals have been found. The lower cost techniques require little training and simple equipment to operate at a relatively inexpensive price, but only gives qualitative results. In addition, most of current methods do not look at the dissolution profile of the tablets simultaneously with the concentration of API. Therefore, we propose to develop an assay that can quantify the concentrations of multiple APIs simultaneously and measure dissolution rates. In order to address current gaps in knowledge, my research proposal has three main parts in the assay development: 1) Development of an fluorescent/luminescent assay for detection of counterfeit/substandard antimalarial using small-molecules-based methods and field testing in Ghana; 2) Development of a fluorescent assay for detection of water-soluble pharmaceuticals using SELEX; and 3) Design a detection platform using microfluidic chips for real time quantification of multiple active pharmaceutical ingredients. For proof-of-concept, an antimalarial drug (artesunate and amodiaquine) and antibacterial antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) are selected to demonstrate the probe development and test the chip performance. Overall, the assay will be rapid, robust, portable, inexpensive, multiplexed, quantitative, specific, and sensitive. At a big picture level, emphasizing drug quality and creating robust mechanisms of drug testing will improve health outcomes and enhance treatment efficacy in resource limited settings.

Jurodivost a jiné projevy substandardního chování z pohledu řečově-komunikačních taktik. Na materiálu Minejí pro čtení Dimitrije Rostovského / The holy foolishness and other expressions of sub-standard behaviour from the point of view of speech-behaviour tactics Based on Dimitry of Rostov's Chetii Minei

Řoutil, Michal January 2012 (has links)
The presented thesis deals with the holy foolishness and other expressions of sub- standard behaviour as part of hagiography. It is examined from the point of view of the so-called "singular speech-behaviour tactics" (сингулярные рече-поведенческие тактики) and based on the analysis of texts taken from the most comprehensive corpus of the hagiographic texts written in the Church Slavonic, Dimitry of Rostov's Chetii Minei. The thesis consists of the Introduction, three main chapters, Conclusion and Bibliography. The first chapter focuses on history: it describes relevant works on the Russian hagiographic literature of the 11th-17th centuries concerning the hagiographies of the holy fools, it shows the current state of search in Russia and describes the basic monuments of literature. The second part of this chapter deals with the life and work of a great Russian writer of the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, Dimitry of Rostov (1651-1709). The second chapter is devoted to the methodological approach used in the thesis, i.e. the singular speech-behaviour tactics as understood by E.M. Vereshchagin and V.G. Kostomarov, who introduced them in the world science. Furthermore, the wider and narrower context of the research carried in this field up to date is shown. In the third chapter, the essential...

Blockchain i försörjningskedjan för läkemedel : Ökad transparens och spårbarhet i kampen mot förfalskade och undermåliga läkemedel

Enesgård Forsell, Rasmus, Berge Hedkvist, Kim January 2019 (has links)
Falsified and substandard drugs are classified as a global problem and continue to increase as manufacturing becomes globalized and the complexity of distribution systems expands. The falsified and substandard drugs come with major health risks and socioeconomic consequences. The pharmaceutical supply chain is handled by several parties, making it harder to detect when falsified and substandard drugs end up in distribution. Since the rise of the cryptocurrency bitcoin, blockchain technology has been recognized for its transparency and security. Previous research describes blockchain as a decentralized database structure that preserves a chronological chain of blocks where each block contains a registered valid network activity verified by consensus of the participants in the network. The purpose of this study is to create a broader understanding of how blockchain can improve the transparency and traceability of the pharmaceutical supply chain in order to reduce the incidence of falsified and substandard drugs. The study is based on a qualitative method in the form of five semi-structured interviews with representatives from the pharmaceutical industry and two blockchain companies. In the study's discussion section, the literature study is set against the collected empirical material. Two tables also illustrate how the pharmaceutical industry is working with traceability and what effects blockchain can provide a supply chain. Finally, the study notes that regulations on the pharmaceutical industry primarily control which database structure is implemented on the supply chain. It is also stated that blockchain has characteristics that can improve transparency and traceability of a supply chain, but the technology is to some extent limited mainly by its large need for capacity

Uzavírací mechanismus papírových sáčků / Closing mechanism paper bag

Klíma, Pavel January 2009 (has links)
This thesis deals with a design of new dot-wheels gearing. These wheels serve for closing of paper covers of tea bags. First of all the suggested spare options of the gearing shape are compared with the original. On the basis of the comparison results the gearing is solved as a substandard kind of involute gearing. The involute gearing is designed by the method of generalized parameters. For the gearing design the program GEARING – symetrical profile version 1.5. was used. Consequently this program was adapted for the case of the change of the instrument shape by the user. The kind of wheels material was designed. Further the way of wheels production for single-piece and batch production was also designed. At the end the economic evaluation of the wheels production with newly designed profile was done.
