Prostupnost krajiny v kontextu její fragmentace dopravní infrastrukturou a sub/urbánní výstavbou / Landscape permeability in context of it's fragmentation by traffic and suburbanization

Štambergová, Barbora January 2015 (has links)
Landscape permeability is currently significantly decreasing mainly due to anthropogenic barriers - transportation infrastructure and sub/urban development. The construction of these barriers has various environmental impacts on animals that differ among taxa. Ensuring a certain degree of permeability of the landscape is crucial for the survival of many species of organisms. Effective tools for the planning protection and restoration of the permeability of the landscape are series of models, whose theoretical framework and practical use are described in this thesis. The practical part deals with the modeling of changes in landscape permeability in the southern hinterlands of Prague. The effectiveness of the implemeted mitigation measures is also evaluated. Keywords: landscape fragmentation, landscape permeability, ecoducts, mitigation measures, suburbanization

Managing Growth: Suburbanization and Environmental Protection in Metropolitan Washington Since 1970

Spiers, John January 2013 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Marilynn Johnson / This study examines widespread efforts to manage the environmental impact of suburbanization in metropolitan America since 1970. Using the Washington, DC area as a site for analysis, I demonstrate how residents, public officials, and organized interests balanced suburban development and environmental protection. Featuring cases from the Virginia and Maryland suburbs, this project considers environmental conflicts resulting from housing, commercial, and highway projects as well as efforts to preserve rural land and farming from suburban encroachment. As metropolitan Washington decentralized, the environmental impact of suburbanization worsened, producing different approaches to managing development and protecting the environment. These responses reflected new social and spatial inequalities, as well as differences in political leadership and civic activism. While communities in Maryland benefited from more progressive public concern, local leadership and strong support from the state for growth management, their counterparts in Virginia struggled to overcome strong and pervasive protections for property rights. This project rewrites our understanding of suburbanization and environmental protection in two ways. First, it urges scholars to rethink a traditional emphasis on federal policies; even in the suburbs of the nation's capital, the active participation of the public at large, as well as officials at the local and state levels, was critical to the success or failure of environmental protection. The present study thus demonstrates how and why different approaches to growth management emerged across metropolitan areas. Second, this study differs from the existing social science literature by moving away from policy analysis to focus on the broader context of decision-making in planning suburban development. Drawing on correspondence, publicity materials, and public testimony from residents, environmental groups, local officials, business organizations, and federal agencies, this study offers a more complete picture of growth management, providing a historically informed and policy relevant argument about environmental protection in metropolitan America. Ultimately, it reveals that even with an unprecedented degree of expansion of state regulation and civic engagement, the legal and cultural regimes surrounding the use of property often continued to privilege private gain over environmental protection as localities competed for economic investment. In a few cases, however, we can see how residents and public officials pursued more holistic forms of growth management in metropolitan America, laying the groundwork for a model of more meaningful public participation to enhance environmental protection in the future. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2013. / Submitted to: Boston College. Sociální prostředí a lokální komunity: město, suburbium, venkov / Social environment and local communities: city, suburb , countryside

Špačková, Petra January 2011 (has links)
Since the 19th century, the processes of modernization, industrialization and urbanization have fundamentally impacted the spatial organization and the actual contents of social ties. In particular, the role of place of residence in everyday life has significantly changed. Compared to the past, the spatial distance is less relevant for maintenance of interpersonal ties and non-local social relations are of growing importance. This process has been recently enhanced by development of communication technologies and the Internet in particular. The Internet has transferred many social ties into virtual communities without any spatial reference. The dissertation deals with the consequences of the above indicated changes for the social environments in urban, suburban and rural localities and it is built on the geographic perspective of social network research. The theoretical framework of the research is based on combination of the concepts of social environment and the concept of local community. Further, the conceptualization of the study of local social environment is presented. In addition, the factors undermining the differentiated social environment and the character of community ties in various types of geographical contexts are discussed. The attention is also paid to the importance of population...

Implementace geoinformačních technologií do modelování urbanizačních procesů při strategickém plánování rozvoje měst / Implementation of geospatial technologies into modeling of urban processes in strategic planning of city development

Burian, Jaroslav January 2012 (has links)
OF PH.D. THESIS - RNDR. JAROSLAV BURIAN Abstract in English "Implementation of geospatial technologies into modeling of urbanization processes in strategic planning of city development" PhD thesis represents original author's approach to the modeling of urban processes by using GIS in Olomouc region. In theoretical part, urban processes and spatial structures of the cities are described in connection with geospatial technologies and digital data for studying, analysis, modeling and simulation. Practical part is divided into for separated parts to fluently binding and creating homogenous thematic block. The first part of the thesis analyses development of Olomouc city by using functional areas derived from historical urban plans (since 1930). The development of urban processes, spatial structures of the city and impacts of urbanization and suburbanization are evaluated. Second chapter describes identification, analysis and quantification of suburbanization in Olomouc suburban space. The main result is Toolbox "Suburban Analyst" in ArcGIS software that use multi- criteria evaluation method and allows identifying and quantifying suburbanization in municipalities' level. Third part analyses the readiness of municipalities and cadastral areas for suburbanization. The final values of readiness represent...

Dopady suburbanizačních procesů na obec - případová studie města Klecany / The effects of suburbanization processes on municipality - the case study of the city Klecany

Faberová, Jana January 2010 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the influence that suburbanization processes have on a historic city. Namely it is the city Klecany that the thesis focuses on in the Prague -- East region. Suburbanization can be observed in the Czech Republic since the second half of the 1990's, but its specific influence depends on a particular municipality. Therefore the goal of this thesis is to compare theoretical assumptions about suburbanization with its real consequences in Klecany, especially in the sphere of transport, economy, municipal budget, development, population structure, social and political environment etc. One part of the thesis focuses on measuring suburbanization in Klecany using the so-called classic formula and also an opinion survey was made among the former and the new inhabitants.

Transformace rekreačního zázemí Prahy / Transformation of Recreational Facilities in Prague

Tesař, Jakub January 2012 (has links)
The present thesis studies the transformation of recreational facilities of Prague. It is focused on a model area of villages, Ohrobec and Dolní Břežany, which have been long - term observed by the departement of social geography and regional development of Charles University in Prague. Although this area is a significant recreational zone, since 1990's it passes through a considerable number of changes. In this area the transformation of second home and suburbal activity occurs and changes the present landscape character. In an observed locality it has occured the tranformation of the structure of area users. The aim of the thesis is to find out how these people use this area, how do they identify themselves with the place where they live or relax and, what kind of mutual relationships they have. Due to the character of my topic, I have chosen several methods from qualitative research, the main source of information is questionnaire survey between the inhabitants and vacationers.
