Child protection assessment: an ecological perspective

Scott, Dorothy Ann January 1995 (has links)
In a semi-longitudinal exploratory study using observational and in-depth interviewing methods the following questions were explored through an intensive analysis of 10 families involving 17 allegedly abused children. / 1. What are the factors to which social work practitioners in different organisational settings (a hospital based child abuse service and a statutory child protection service) give salience in their assessment of alleged child abuse cases and what is the nature of their observed models of practice? / 2. What is the nature of the interaction between different organisations, and in particular between the core organisations (the hospital, police and child protection services) in cases of alleged child abuse? / 3. How do parents perceive their experiences related to the alleged abuse of their children, and how do they perceive their interactions with core organisations? / Professionals were interviewed about their unfolding perceptions throughout the life of each case, with a total of 134 interviews being conducted with practitioners (an average of 13.4 per case). A total of 46 practice episodes were also observed (an average of 4.6 per case), including office interviews, home visits, groups sessions, meetings, case conferences and a court hearing. For all but one of the ten families it was also possible to conduct lengthy, in-depth home interviews with the parents about their experiences relating to the alleged abuse and their contact with services, thus bringing the combined total of professionals' and parents' in-depth interviews to 143. / A content analysis of the field notes yielded a number of themes and key findings. In relation to the first question, it was found that social workers in both the hospital and the child protection service gave salience to quite different variables and both groups attended to a much narrower range of variables than the framework of psycho-social assessment traditionally taught in professional social work education. / In relation to the second question, it was found that a pattern of marked tensions was evident in the relationship between the child protection service and both the hospital and the police. This mirrored the inter-organisational tensions which existed at a broader political level between these organisations. The tensions at the service delivery level were conceptualised as gate keeping disputes, dispositional disputes and domain disputes.

Människohandel för sexuella ändamål - Den moderna tidens slavhandel : En kvalitativ studie om hur svenska ideella organisationer arbetar med stöd och skydd till människohandelsoffer

Gröholt, Sandra January 2022 (has links)
We live in a world where slavery has taken on a new form. Even though the type of slavery we learn about in the history books has been abolished, slavery continues today through, among other things, the sex trade. This study is a qualitative informant study that aims to find out how Swedish non-profit organizations provide support and protection to women who have been subjected to human trafficking for sexual purposes, and what explanatory models exist for why human trafficking for sexual purposes takes place today. The study has also examined which areas for improvement can be identified in the work for support and protection of victims of human trafficking for sexual purposes. The study is based on semi-structured interviews from 4 different Swedish non-profit organizations that in various ways are active actors in the work with human trafficking for sexual purposes. The results shed light on the fact that there is a demand for sexual services that propel the industry of human trafficking for sexual purposes forward. This type of crime can also be explained as a type of gender-based violence that is rooted in a patriarchal and unequal society. Civil society has an important and crucial role to play in combating this type of crime and, not least, in providing support and protection to victims of trafficking. A human trafficking victim has both urgent and long-term needs that need to be met. The study describes civil society's support and protection efforts that human trafficking victims are offered and what conditions they have in Sweden to provide it.

Exploring the meaning of protection from abuse : problem construction in Scottish adult support and protection practice and policy

Sherwood-Johnson, Fiona January 2013 (has links)
This PhD project by publication begins to explore how Scottish adult support and protection (ASP) policy and practice carves out its role and remit. It examines the ways that concepts like “abuse”, “vulnerability” and “protection” have been constructed, both by individual practitioners and at a policy level. The submission comprises five papers published in peer-reviewed journals and this contextualising document, which knits together the work and draws out overall conclusions and implications. The papers themselves report on a literature review, a further analysis of case study research into ASP practice and a critical policy comparison. The case study research was conducted immediately prior to legislative changes in Scotland with respect to ASP, and the policy comparison was conducted subsequently to these changes. Overall, the findings highlight the ways that a social constructionist approach can usefully deepen our understandings of ASP. That is, they show how understanding concepts like “protection”, “vulnerability” and “abuse” to be actively constructed in unique and complex contexts can promote criticality in policy-making, practice and research.

Föreställningar om våldsutsatta män i samkönade relationer; exempel från stödgivande samhällsinstanser. / Perceptions of male victims in same-sex relationships; examples from supporting community instances.

Ekman, Emelie, Demirel, Narin January 2017 (has links)
Statistics show that very few men exposed to domestic violence, either in heterosexual or same-sex relationships, contact any social service. Although domestic violence is often restricted to being defined the same as heterosexual relationships as same-sex relationships, knowledge about violence in same-sex relationships is inadequate. The purpose of this study was to examine if any perception and understanding of violence in same-sex relationships exist within supporting community instances, focusing on male victims of domestic violence. The study containing eight qualitative interviews with respondents within supporting community instances. The result is presented under the themes “stödgivande samhällsinstansers bemötande”, “heteronormativa föreställningar kring våldsutsatta män”, “möjlighet till stöd och skydd” and “outing och skam”. To notice is that the result showed that perceptions about heteronormativity can affect which type of support and protection male victims of domestic violence is given. Lastly, a discussion about the developed result around the inadequate knowledge about violence in same-sex relationships will be held. The conclusions of the study were that there is a heteronormative approach within some of the supporting community instances we interviewed. There are also suggestions for future research and therefore needs to be studied at length.
