Experimental Study on the Interaction between Surface Wave and Internal Wave

Surface gravity waves and internal waves are two of the most common natural phenomena in the ocean. While oceanographers believe that internal waves have greater influence over the surface waves, if is not clear to what extent that the former have affected the latter. As an internal wave propagating in the ocean, short period flow could be induced on the free surface layer. Moreover, as internal waves propagating over a submarine ridge, internal breaking accompanying by large vortex may have occurred, which may also affect the properties of the surface waves. To prove the relationship between them, basic mathematical equations have been derived, but had never been proven in the laboratory experiments or field observations. In this thesis, the results of a series of laboratory experiments conducted at the National Sun Yen-sen University are employed to study the waveform evolution and change to the physical parameters of the surface waves, resulting from the generation of internal waves induced on a stratified fluid, as both propagate together above a plane bottom or across single ridge. These experiments were carried out in a stratified two-layer fresh/brine water system (upper layer with fresh water density 996 kg / m3; bottom layer brine water with 1030 kg / m3) in a steel framed wave tank of 12m long with cross-section of 0.7 m high by 0.5 m wide. A plunging-type wave maker was used to produce the designated surface waves, from which the internal waves were induced at the interface. Based on the experimental results in the fluid system with uniform density, wave height and period of the surface wave were first calibrated. It was found that the amplitude of a surface wave decreased first due to the breaking of the internal wave on the apex of a submerged ridge and then increased due to wave regeneration at the back of the ridge, when the surface wave propagated over single ridge. Beyond the ridge, the peak period with maximum energy associated with the transmitted wave remained almost the same with that of the incident waves. In a stratified fluid system, wave height of the surface waves and internal waves did not suffer much change but the peak period of a surface wave increased as an internal wave just across the apex of the obstacle, under a condition referred to as weaken interaction between the waves and the obstacle. For the intense wave breaking condition at the interface, wave height of the internal waves decreased and the period of surface waves or internal waves shortened. However, wave height of the surface wave above the apex of the obstacle increased due to the intense wave breaking. The results obtained from the present laboratory experiments on the interaction between a surface wave and the induced internal wave could benefit others interested in surface and internal wave interaction for practical applications in oceanography or numerical modeling.

Field studies comparing SASW, beamforming and MASW test methods and characterization of geotechnical materials based on Vs

Estimating S-wave velocities (Vs) from Rayleigh-wave velocities (VR) is widely used in field seismic testing for geotechnical engineering purposes. In this research, two widely used surface-wave methods, the Spectral-Analysis-of-Surface-Waves (SASW) and Multichannel-Analysis-of-Surface-Waves (MASW) methods, are evaluated and compared in field experiments. An experimental parametric study was undertaken of the SASW and MASW methods. Conventional seismic sources in the SASW method are sledge hammers, bulldozers and vibroseises. For MASW testing, sledge hammers and small shakers are usually used as the seismic sources. In this research, MASW testing was performed with traditional and non-traditional sources at a site owned by the City of Austin, Texas. Experimental dispersion curves and Vs profiles from SASW tests are used as references for the field parametric study with the MASW method. The source type, source offset, receiver spacing and number of receivers were varied to evaluate the impact of each variable on the field experimental dispersion curve. Two type of receivers, 1-Hz and 4.5-Hz natural-frequency geophones, were also compared in these tests. A second part of this research involved studying the use of characterizing geotechnical materials based on Vs. This work included two projects. The first project involved basalt on the Big Island of Hawaii. To develop empirical ground motion prediction models for the purpose of earthquake hazard mitigation and seismic design on the Big Island, the subsurface site conditions beneath 22 strong motion stations were investigated by SASW tests. Vs profiling was performed to depths of more than 100 ft. Vs30, the average Vs in the top 30 m, was also calculated to assign NEHRP site classes to different testing locations. Different materials, mainly thought to be stiff basalt, were characterized and grouped based on the Vs values. These groups were then compared with reference curves for sand and gravel (Menq, 2003) to differentiate the groups. The second project dealing with charactering geotechnical materials based on Vs involved of soil/rock profiles at a project site in British Columbia, Canada. The goals in terms of this research were to: (1) compare the Vs profiles from the different test locations to investigate the stiffnesses of different geologic materials, the variability in the material stiffnesses, and the estimated depth to bedrock, and (2) to compare the Vs profiles to existing geological and geotechnical information such as nearby boreholes, cone penetration tests and seismic cone penetration tests. Good agreement between SASW Vs profiles and boring records is expected when lateral variability at the site is low. However, when lateral variability is significant, then the difference between localized measurements, like borings and CPT results, and global measurements, like SASW Vs results, can further contribute to understanding the site conditions as shown at the site in British Columbia, Canada. / text

A detailed theoretical study for the operation of the surface-acoustic-wave diode storage correlator is presented. A circuit model describing the device is developed which is used to analyze the signal storage characteristics and the different read-out modes of operation for both p-n and Schottky diode structures. The calculated predictions of the proposed theory are in excellent agreement with experimental data published by independent researchers. The theory presented is self consistent and takes into account, for the first time, the minority carrier lifetime in the dynamics of charging the p-n diode structures which was neglected in previous theories. A straightforward transmission line theory approach is developed for finding the surface-wave amplitude excited by the diode potential during the read-out process. The frequency response characteristics predicted for these structures is a fairly slowly varying function of frequency; hence such correlators are essentially bandlimited by the input and output surface-wave transducers.
