Development Of An Improved On-Line Voltage Stability Index Using Synchronized Phasor Measurement

Recent events, such as the Northeast Blackout of 2003, have highlighted the need for accurate real-time stability assessment techniques to detect when an electric power system is on the brink of voltage collapse. While many techniques exist, most techniques are computationally demanding and cannot be used in an on-line application. A voltage stability index (VSI) can be designed to estimate the distance of the current operating point to the voltage marginally stable point during the system operation. In this research work, a new VSI was developed that not only can detect the system voltage marginally stable point but also is computationally efficient for on-line applications. Starting with deriving a method to predict three types of maximum transferable power of a single source power system, the new VSI is based on the three calculated load margins. In order to apply the VSI to large power systems, a method has been developed to simplify the large network behind a load bus into a single source and a single transmission line given the synchronized phasor measurements of the power system variables and network parameters. The simplified system model, to which the developed VSI can be applied, preserves the power flow and the voltage of the particular load bus. The proposed voltage stability assessment method, therefore, provides a VSI of each individual load bus and can identify the load bus that is the most vulnerable to voltage collapse. Finally, the new VSI was tested on three power systems. Results from these three test cases provided validation of the applicability and accuracy of the proposed VSI.

<p>The optimization of the electrical system voltage range of a mild hybrid electric vehicle is examined in this research study. The objective is to evaluate and propose the optimized vehicle voltage level for the mild hybrid electric vehicle from both technical and economic aspects. The approach is to evaluate the fuel economy improvement from the mild hybrid electric vehicle of various voltage level for the cost benefit study. The evaluation is conducted from the vehicle system level with discussions of components selection for system optimization. Autonomie, a simulation tool widely used by academic and automotive industry, is used for the vehicle simulation and fuel economy evaluation. The cost analysis is based on the system cost factoring in the component cost based forecasted production volume. </p> <p>The driver for this study is to propose an optimized voltage for the mild hybrid electric vehicle for the vehicle manufacturers and suppliers to standardize the implementation to meet the fuel economy and emission requirements and vehicle power demand. The standardization of the vehicle voltage level can improve design and development efficiency, reusability and reduce cost in developing non-standard voltage levels of the mild hybrid vehicle. The synergy in standardized voltage level for the mild hybrid vehicle can accelerate technology implementation toward mass production to meet regulatory emission and fuel economy requirements. </p>

Although there are many kinds of tap-changers, this study focuses on VUCL models. The theoretical background of the thesis is that the new shield is suitable and useable in all VUCL models. The primary topic of the thesis is to study that the new shield protects the resistance box in the middle of the tap changers. To do this study, Creo Parametric, Comsol, and SpaceClaim are the programs used. / Detta är en kandidatexamen i maskinteknik. Avhandlingens huvudämne är den elektriska beräkningen av kranbytarens sköld. Även om det finns många olika typer av lindnings fokuserar denna studie på VUCL modeller. Den teoretiska bakgrunden för avhandlingen är att den nya skölden är lämplig och användbar i alla VUCL-modeller. Det primära ämnet för avhandlingen är att studera det nya sköld skyddar motståndet rutan i mitten av lindningskopplare. För att göra denna studie är Creo Parametric, Comsol och SpaceClaim de program som används.
