Development and Validation of a Systematic Training Program for the diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Concomitant Conditions

Todd, Lind K. 01 May 1992 (has links)
The research concerning eating disorders and concomitant conditions shows that anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are serious disorders that pose many diagnostic and therapeutic challenges to mental health and nutrition professionals. Most psychologists and nutritionists receive broad-based training that likely only superficially touches upon the importance of these diagnostic issues. Nevertheless, effective treatment planning requires that diagnostic issues and concomitant conditions be evaluated and incorporated into the diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders. Thus, there is an increasing need for specialized training in order to better evaluate and treat the complicated clinical picture presented by eating disorder clients. However to date, no systematic training package has been available to meet this training need. The present study was designed to fulfill this need by developing and initially validating an expert system-based, computer-assisted training program (ES-CAT). The initial validation involved comparing the mean overall post-test scores of 56 subjects. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups [i.e., expert system-based, computer assisted trainer (ES-CAT), expert system-based trainer without computer guidance (ES), and traditional self-study (SS)]. The ES-CAT was shown to be more effective in training subjects in the diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders than either an expert system-based trainer without computer guidance (ES) or a traditional method of training (SS). Indeed, subjects who used the ES-CAT showed large gains in knowledge and mastery of the material at better than 85%. The addition of the computer-based guidance to the expert system trainer showed more significant gains (from a pre-test to post-test) of learning than the expert system trainer manual only. Furthermore, the expert system-based trainer without computer guidance (ES) was significantly more effective in training subjects than a traditional method of reading and studying textbooks (SS). The total training time of the ES-CAT was approximately 16 hours. Thus, a reasonable and effective means of training practitioners to better evaluate and treat the complicated clinical picture presented by eating disorder patients was developed and initially validated.

An evaluation of systematic training in effective parenting : a pilot study

Norington, Margaret A., n/a January 1983 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to assess the immediate and delayed effectiveness of Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP), an Adlerian-based parent study group programme. STEP is a nine-session, multi-media package which combines communication skills with basic Adlerian principles. The focus of the study was the parents. The dependent variables were: parents' perceptions of their Target Children's behaviour; parents' knowledge of an Adlerian approach to child-rearing; and parental perceptions of their own behaviour and feelings. Measurement of the dependent variables was by the use of the following instruments: the Adlerian Parent Assessment of Child Behavior Scale (APACBS), a 32-item interval scale developed to assess parents' perceptions of typical child behaviours dealt with in the STEP programme; the STEP Questionnaire, a cognitively-based questionnaire based on the content component of the STEP programme; and individual interviews held with the mothers in the Experimental (STEP) Group. The Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design was used in the study. Both the parents in the STEP and Control Groups were either clients or potential clients of an Educational Clinic, or had been referred by a School Counsellor. The STEP programme was run with strict adherence to materials and format by the researcher. Measurements were taken immediately following the completion of the programme and again 14 weeks later. Results indicated significant positive short- and longterm changes in parental perceptions of their children's behaviour as measured by APACBS after involvement in a STEP programme. Short- and long-term changes also occurred in the parents' knowledge of an Adlerian approach to childrearing as measured by the STEP Questionnaire. The STEP Group mothers reported changes in their behaviour and feelings following participation in a STEP programme. Some recommendations for further research are: replication of the study with various populations; studies measuring actual observed behaviour of the child, and the parent; effects of STEP as a minor strand or part of an ongoing parent education programme; the effects of varying levels of skills of leaders; and the incorporation of video cassette recordings of the audio tapes in the STEP kit.

The Effects of a Systematic Training Program in Responding Skills on Dental Hygiene Students at Texas Woman's University

Wallace, David W. 05 1900 (has links)
The purposes of this investigation were (1) to determine if a systematic training program in communication skills could be used to improve written response levels of dental hygiene students, and (2) to determine if a systematic training program in communication skills could yield improved dental hygiene student-patient rapport. The experiment involved two groups of dental hygiene students that had previously been randomly selected and consisted of twelve junior and twelve senior students in each group. The entire population of dental hygiene students at Texas Woman's University participated in the study. Analysis of the data provided statistically significant findings on seven of the eight hypotheses. Those subjects in the systematic training program were able to demonstrate increased ability to write responses and, in addition, had higher patient rapport scores. The results were also statistically significant two weeks following the training period. It was, therefore, concluded that the systematic training program in communication skills was an effective teaching device for improving dental hygiene responses. The systematic training program also seemed to be an effective strategy for improving dental hygiene student-patient rapport formation.

Parent Training and Guided Imagery: Comparison of a Traditional and a Modified STEP Program

Smith, Dianne M. 12 1900 (has links)
The effectiveness of guided imagery as an enhancement to the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) program was explored during a shortened 8-week program using three parent groups of elementary-age students matched for parent training experience and couple participation: a) an imagery-modified STEP group (STEP-Im, n = 14); b) a traditional STEP group (STEP, n = 14); and c) a drop-out comparison group (n = 10). Guided imagery consisted of centering exercise(s) for focus and concentration; structured imagery of Adlerian concepts; and open-ended role-assumption imagery for clarifying personal values, the perspectives of others, and concept practice.

The critical role of an effective systematic training evaluation practice on learning value within a state owned company : a review and critique

Ramiah, Joyce 01 August 2014 (has links)
The critical role that an effective systematic training evaluation practice plays is in its ability to collect value systematically. The collected data is utilised to make a judgement or to evaluate learnings contribution. Without the training evaluation practice learning value is obscured. The instructionnal systems design (ISD) Addie is assessed as the systematic structure that can greatly assist the training evaluation practice. It supports the proposal of collecting value throughout the training lifecycle for the holistic view of learning value. The Kirkpatrick and Phillips (K/P) summative framework will be used to assess the current practice in collecting post-learning data. Addie was highly valued by the survey participants. The current summative practice in the organisation stops mainly at level two of the Kirkpatrick/Phillips model. The practice lacks comprehensive data collection at recommended best practice levels and is therefore, not effective, efficient and systematic in its approach to declare learning value. / Human Resource Management / M.
