A Study of Japanese Loanwords in TaiwaneseYamaguchi, Kaname 23 July 2008 (has links)
This thesis uses the angle of linguistic to analyze Japanese loanwords in Taiwanese. From the angle of linguistic this thesis further expounds the type of Japanese loanwords in Taiwanese on three points: 1) Japanese loanwords in Taiwanese have two types: first is type of pronunciation, ¡§transliterlated word¡¨; second is type of writing, ¡§borrowed word¡¨. ¡§Transliterlated word¡¨ have two types: first is ¡§pure transliterlated word¡¨; second is ¡§half transliterlated and paraphrased word¡¨. ¡§Borrowed word¡¨ have four types: first is ¡§self-producted word¡¨; second is ¡§turn borrowed word¡¨; third is ¡§return borrowed word¡¨; last is ¡§turn and return borrowed word¡¨; 2) The most type of Japanese loanwords in Taiwanese is ¡§borrowed word¡¨. It is easier to hear ¡§borrowed word¡¨ than ¡§transliterlated word¡¨, so it is easy for ¡§transliterlated word¡¨ to attract attension, it is difficult for ¡§borrowed word¡¨ to attract attension. 3) The change of Japanese loanwords in Taiwanese performs in pronunciation and meaning. The change of pronunciation performs in consonant, vowel and tones. About the change of meaning, when Japanese vocabularies which have many meaning generally come in Taiwanese, only one or some meanings come in Taiwanese, all meanings do not come in Taiwanese, so when Japanese loanwords come in Taiwanese, the necessary meanings come in Taiwanese, or another meanings are added to original meanings, loanwords do not completely borrow original meanings. These phenomenons perform in amplify, diminish, devolution and accelate. From these points, this thesis researches the form of Japanese loanwords in Taiwanese.

A Model Study on Taiwanese Banking entering into Vietnamese Market: Taking the Corporate banking as an ExampleChen, Hung-ching 25 July 2008 (has links)
Vietnam has officially completed the bilateral negotiations with members of WTO on May 31, 2006. One of the commitments was to open the national financial market. In recent years, Vietnam has become the most popular market for Taiwanese banking to internationalize and expand their business due to the following reasons: the unopened financial market in China, the close relations between the financial industries in Taiwan and Vietnam, and the mission of ¡§Passing Experiences¡¨ by the officials of the Financial Supervisory Commission in Taiwan. Many Taiwanese banks have already set up branches or offices in Vietnam. Moreover, Cathay United Bank has cooperated with the national Incom Bank in Vietnam to establish the Indovina Bank. Vietnam has become one of the main profit-making overseas countries beyond Hong Kong, in the banking industry.
According to the statistics, from 1988 to 2006, the investment of Taiwanese companies in Vietnam exceeded eight billion USD. Taiwan was the biggest foreign investment country in Vietnam. Vietnam has opened the flotation of foreign investment in recent years, and Taiwanese investment is the major source. Vietnam has become another main market for Taiwanese companies. On the other hand, these companies are the basic clients for Taiwanese banks in Vietnam. The study has taken Taiwanese banking as the main theme to discuss and analyze the entry models into the Vietnamese market to determine the possible problems and difficulties.
Chapter II discusses the related theories and models of multinational companies in overseas markets. It also explains the internationalization process of banking, product lifespan and marketing strategies. Chapter III explains the recent economic development and investment environment as well as the present financial situation and banking regulations in Vietnam. Chapter IV discusses the banking business in Taiwan and investment in Vietnam.
Chapter V analyzes all of the collected information and summarizes which models should be followed when entering the Vietnamese market, based on different competition advantages and entry timing of banks. Marketing strategies are also discussed. Chapter six is the conclusion and provides suggestions.

SAY “YES, I DO” TO WHOM: A STUDY OF TAIWANESE IMMIGRANTS’ ATTITUDES TOWARD DATING, MATE SELECTION AND MARRIAGE2013 November 1900 (has links)
Gordon (1964) in his theory of assimilation predicts that when a society is fully integrated, minority’s distinct characteristics would wane and inter-group marriage will be common. Thereafter, inter-group marriage has been widely used as an indicator of race/ethnic relations. This study investigates the attitudes of Taiwanese immigrants, who reside in Burnaby, British Columbia, toward dating, mate selection and marriage, as a case study, for the understanding of the process of integration of minority groups residing in large ethnic communities in Canada.
The study begins with a discussion about the current debates based on the assimilationist and integrationist approach with an application of Gramsci’s theory of “good sense” and “common sense”. The empirical question of this study is whether intra-group marriage of ethnic minority is a contingent outcome of such ethnic group in areas of high ethnic density (i.e., ethnic communities), or it is a spontaneous outcome of their established ethnic solidarity based on the emergence of panethnicity due to social exclusion. An overview of the historical development of ethnic Chinese communities in Canada then follows for the purpose of illustrating the structural context these immigrants reside in. A detail demographic profile of the Taiwanese immigrants in Burnaby is also included. An examination of the phenomenon, Asian panethnicity, as a by-product of the assimilationist approach, among first and 1.5 generation Asian immigrants in Census Metropolitan Area of Vancouver is provided. Internal force from within group to pull the members of the Taiwanese community together, as well as the ethnic boundary they draw, are discussed the in following chapter. Intergenerational and gender difference of the Taiwanese immigrants of this study are also investigated.
In summary, the results of the study indicate that intra-group marriage is more than a contingent outcome of a high level of immigrant population density in an ethnic community. Rather, marrying someone of the same race/ethnicity is more of a spontaneous outcome of ethnic solidarity in places where the emergence of Asian panethnicity has been observed. Patterns of Gramsci’s “common sense” are found among immigrants who have passively rationalized their subordinate status; however, some patterns of “good sense” are also shown among immigrants with the capacity to become historically autonomous.
