Scale-up of stirred tanks for reagent conditioning at apatite flotation.

Paulo Rogério Meneses de Sousa 14 December 2010 (has links)
This work has studied the application of eight classical methods appointed by literature to accomplish the scale-up of stirred tanks which aimed to suspend slurries of 40% of solids, containing coarse (mean diameter=254 micrometers) apatite particles. The validity of the methods was accomplished by using two tanks of similar geometry but different capacity (V1=10 e V2=49 cubic decimeter), together with impellers of different diameter (D1=0,078m versus D2=0,132m) and design (turbine of 2 or 4 blades inclined at 45 degrees and Rushton turbine). To assist the process of validation, the impeller speed (Njs) under which no particle rests on the bottom of the tank for more than 1-2 seconds (1-s Criterium) was used together with the axial profile of solids percent distribution plus the extension of the turbulent versus quiescent zones within the two tanks. For any of the eight scale-up methods, the difference between the predicted value of Njs (N2) for the 49 cubic decimeter tank and the actual value (experimental) of the same variable was determined and its magnitude was expressed in terms of the percent error (E). The methods that yielded E less than 10% were considered as suitable for the aimed application. Considering the 2-inclined blade impeller, low value of E yielded by the method based on the constancy of the ratio power/volume (E=2%) and also by the empiric method of Rautzen (E=6%) indicate that the expression N2=N1.(D1/D2) with its exponent of the relation between diameters ranging between 0,67 and 0,75 is suitable for the desired application. Regarding the 4-inclined blade impeller, because the method based on the constancy of the ratio power/volume (E=4%) and also the empiric methods of Rautzen (E=0%) and Zwietering (E=5%) yielded the lowest values of E, the expression N2=N1.(D1/D2) with its exponent of the relation between diameters ranging between 0,67 and 0,85 is suitable for the aimed application. Moreover, for the Rusthon turbine, only the method based on the constancy of the ratio power/volume (E=8%) was adequate for the aimed application and, thus, the expression N2=N1.(D1/D2) with its exponent of the relation between the diameters equal to 0,67 is suitable for the purpose of this dissertation. Once the actual value of N2 is determined by visual observation, it is not possible to get very accurate results. This way, a generic scale-up expression is proposed: N2=N1.(D1/D2) with its exponent of the relation between the diameters equal to 0,75. On the other hand, the ratio P/V may provide a more objective criterium for scale-up, because the three sort of impellers used in this study yielded E less than 10% when the power/volume method was applied for the purpose of scale-up.

Emissão de metano e microbiota funcional associadas a vinhaça de cana-de-açúcar em sistemas de armazenamento e transporte / Methane emission and functional microbiota associated with sugarcane vinasse in storage and transportation systems

Bruna Gonçalves de Oliveira 26 March 2015 (has links)
This research aimed to quantify methane (CH4) emissions from the vinasse in different storage and transportation systems and, additionally, to evaluate the functional microbiota associated with the production of this gas by molecular biology approaches. Three complimentary studies were performed to reach this goal. The first one was related to the characterization of main vinasse storage and transportation systems adopted in Brazil based on a survey administered to the mills, in south-central region of Brazil, producing sugarcane etanol. The second aimed to quantify the CH4 emissions from vinasse in both, field - channels and thanks - and laboratory conditions. The third study evaluated the functional microbiota associated with the CH4 emission by molecular biology approaches like real time PCR ans pyrosequencing. Microbial analysis indicated that CH4 emissions are produced preferably by anaerobic decomposition of the organic material dissolved in the vinasse and deposited on the bottom of the systems. These emissions are not negligible and should be considered in ethanol\'s carbon footprint calculations. At the uncoated part of the channel, the average emission from two crop years was 0.75 kg CO2 eq m-3 of vinasse, about 5 times greater than the emissions at the coated part. Methane emissions from the tank were about seventy times lower than from the uncoated channel. The laboratory experiment supported the understanding that the vinasse alone produces no significant emission of CH4. The microbial methanogenic niches were probably formed in the sediment, while the vinasse keeps sediment anaerobic conditions necessary for methanogenesis and provides nutrients to speed up the reaction. The Methanobrevibacter genus showed dominant in methanogenic microbial community, as demonstrated by pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. There was a positive correlation between the abundance of 16S rRNA gene Archaea and the functional mcrA and mba genes with the emission of CH4. Information on production and emission of CH4 and vinasse characteristics are important for decision making on mitigation and/or use of gas generated for economic and environmental purposes.

Think-tanks-and Their Role in the New EU Member States:Czech and Slovak Experience

Pitoňáková, Lívia January 2007 (has links)

Liquid Propellant Positioning and Control in Example Propellant Tank

Logan Daniel Walters (11809145) 19 December 2021 (has links)
Two topics relating to low gravity fluid behavior in satellite propellant tanks are considered. In the first, static case, the problem of liquid trapping is examined. Satellite propellant tank end caps optimized for weight are generally shallower and more oblate than hemispherical end caps of the same radius. However, these shallower end caps pose an interesting challenge for propellant management. In the absence of vanes, it is possible for liquid propellant to be trapped in the tank and become unusable. Understanding of how propellant tends to distribute itself in the bare, vaneless tank can be used to drive vane design to counteract these tendencies and ensure propellant remains where desired. The first section of this thesis aims to demonstrate methods that can be used to identify when, how, and why liquid trapping occurs in a given tank geometry. A fluid statics code called Surface Evolver is used to calculate possible fluid configurations for different propellant volumes, contact angles, and end cap designs. The specific case of a cylindrical tank with 2:1 ellipsoidal end caps is studied extensively for ranges of fill fractions and contact angles to illustrate the methods used. Results are computed for each possible propellant configuration: a spherical liquid-gas interface, an asymmetric liquid-gas interface, and a liquid ring. Analytical solutions are found and compared against Surface Evolver results for the spherical liquid-gas interface and liquid ring, showing excellent agreement. Results are also found for other aspect ratio ellipsoidal end caps, superellipsoidal end caps, and torispherical end caps. Each non-hemispherical dome design is found to be able to trap liquid away from the axis of the tank regardless of contact angle. The second part of this thesis, focusing on the dynamic case, details the development of an experimental payload designed to fly on Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo. This experiment is designed to obtain data on sloshing behavior of liquids in microgravity in response to rotation. The payload contains eight scaled down propellant tanks that are rotated while in microgravity, and the resulting slosh is recorded by video cameras inside the payload. The video will be analyzed after the experiment to extract data on damping rates and potentially positional data of the liquid-gas interface. The impact of constraints on the design of the overall experiment are discussed. The purpose of each component in the experiment is explained and justified relative to the design constraints. The remaining work that must be completed before flight on SpaceShipTwo is reviewed, highlighting the most significant unknowns.<br>

Bradáč, Antonín January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis is an optimal method of mixing of the digester with consideration to the uniform mixing of the whole volume, ensuring the quality process conditions for the anaerobic fermentation and the maximum yield and quality of the produced biogas. First chapters describe the basic design parameters, general calculations and the principles for design of individual types of mixers, supplemented by practical examples of mixing large capacity tanks. The work introduces the problem of sludge formation at the sewage treatment plant with an emphasis on sludge treatment and the processes which take place inside the fermenter. Various types of design of anaerobic sludge stabilization digester were introduced. Also ways of their operation, which are necessary for the quality of the fermentation, were presented. In the next chapters, various ways of mixing high-capacity digester tanks and experience from the operation of selected treatment plants were described. According to the theoretical research part of this thesis, several types of mixing equipment was designed for the experimental digestion tank built at the Institute of Process Engineering which is used for research work with mixers. Measurement of the selected pneumatic mixing method was performed on the experimental tank and the findings were evaluated.

Analýza ztráty integrity uskladňovací nádrže pomocí MKP / Integrity breach analysis of storage tank using FEM

Ševčík, Martin January 2018 (has links)
This master thesis is focused on computational modelling of critical external as well as internal pressure acting of the repaired tank. During cleaning of pipelines, the gas mixture entered into this storage tank causing loss of integrity in the connection between the roof and the shell. The first part of the thesis is focused on check calculation of the shell in exceptional conditions. The next part describes the repair of the tank including check of the pillar according to ČSN EN 1993 1 1 and ČSN EN 1993-1-6. The main part of the thesis is focused on determination of the buckling resistances of the tank in original as well as repaired state using ANSYS Mechanical software. The results are comparable with original tank, whose buckling resistance was not decreased due to the repair.

Huhn, Robert 17 January 2008 (has links)
The spreading integration of renewable sources of energy into conventional heat supply systems places high demands on the designing, dimensioning and operation of hot water storage tanks. A pronounced thermal stratification is of positive influence for the efficiency of solar collectors, condensing boilers and the COP of heat pumps connected to the storage tank. The extent of the thermal mixing layer determines the volumetric efficiency of the tank and thus the economics of investment and operation. In this paper, a method is presented by which the losses of hot water storage tanks are correlated to the tank design and operating conditions.

Gas permeability of 3D stitched composites for cryogenic applications

Saha, Shuvam 08 August 2023 (has links) (PDF)
This research aims to investigate the influence of 3D through-thickness stitching on the gas permeability and transverse microcracking of cryogenically cycled carbon/epoxy composites. 3D through-thickness stitching can be used to improve the interlaminar properties of polymer matrix composites (PMCs) and produce lightweight, unitized structures for cryogenic storage tanks. To fully utilize stitched composite structures for these applications, their inherent gas permeability challenges must be understood. Therefore, in this study, the stitched composites' damage evolution and gas permeability was experimentally characterized under a) pure thermal stress, b) thermal and uniaxial mechanical stress, and c) thermal and biaxial mechanical stress. Helium gas permeability was measured for each specimen at room or cryogenic temperatures under a mechanically strained state following the thermo-mechanical cycles. Optical microscopy was used to measure microcrack densities and monitor their evolution through the thickness of the composite specimens. Thin plies, graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) modified resin, and a hybrid barrier layer comprising of both were incorporated in the stitched specimens as barrier layers to reduce their gas permeability. The dependence of gas permeability of stitched composites on the mechanical strain, test temperature, and load history was evaluated and correlated to microcrack density. A significant reduction in permeability and damage evolution (transverse microcracks and delaminations) was obtained for all thermo-mechanical cases using the hybrid barrier layer laminate. Additionally, the permeability was several orders of magnitude lower than the allowable. Overall, the hybrid barrier layer shows tremendous promise as a viable barrier layer for stitched/unstitched composites undergoing thermo-mechanical fatigue involving a cryogenic environment.
