Dao and qi: an exploration of cosmology in early China

20 June 2016 (has links)
;For many years, the relations between the two concepts of "Dao" and "Qi", in ancient Taoist Cosmology, has not been clearly explained. Based on a meticulous study of the relevant Taoist canons, mainly the Four Chapters of Guanzi 管子, Laozi 老子, Zhuangzi 莊子 and Huainanzi 淮南子, the author of this thesis reviews different views in previous scholarship, provides his own observations and hypotheses. This thesis examines how the ancient people conceive to attain "Dao" by cultivating their mind and practicing "Qi"; meanwhile, "Dao" and "Qi" is generated simultaneously in one's body. In addition, by reviewing the trajectory of the development of Taoist Cosmology from the Pre-Qin period to the Han dynasty, this thesis argues that, although "Dao" and "Qi" are different in concept, they can be naturally generated and developed on a same track in one's body. With the analysis of the relations between "Dao" and "Qi", this thesis discuss Chad Hansen's theory that Chinese thought lacks abstract entities in anything resembling the way Western theories of abstract entities did". The second chapter of this paper examines how ancient Chinese respond to the following questions: What is the origin of the world? And what are the laws governing the life and death of the myriad things? In this chapter, the cosmic system of ancient Greek philosophy is also discussed to compare with its counterpart in China, the cosmological system of which is elaborated from the concepts of "Dao" and "Qi". This reveals that neither ancient Chinese Taoists, nor ancient Greek philosophers be able to fully address these two questions. It is hence concluded that the interpretation of the cosmological theory based on "Dao" and "Qi" lacks clarity and precision without addressing to the above mentioned two fundamental questions. The third chapter explores the relations between "Dao" and "Qi" in early Taoist literature . Through literary reviews of the Four Chapters of Guanzi 管子and the Theoretical System of the Four Chapters of Guanzi 管子, with a focus on the differences and similarities of these two substances, "Dao" and "Qi" , according to this author, cannot be equalized in the contexts of the Four Chapters of Guanzi 管子. The daoist gardener

Unknown Date (has links)
The following statement supports the investigations that culminated in the body of sculptural work entitled “Daoist Garden”. It is an examination of the most basic sculptural issues of form and space, and reverses the roles of prototype and mold to give visual accounting of spaces created by curved planes. These spatial records allude to cycles of disintegration and reconfiguration of matter on various timelines and scales. The philosophical influence behind the work employs the concepts of yin and yang, which relate directly to the mold/positive relationship, and are essential to experiencing Dao, the eternally nameless underlying order of the universe. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014.. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

In Hong Kong, a Taoist funeral is usually held for a deceased person by his or her family if the deceased did not have any religious belief or preference. In most cases, a Taoist funeral is a mere convention rather than a reflection of choice or religious affiliation of the deceased. To explore the reason of this ritual popularized in this particular region, I would like to suggest that the music played in a Taoist funeral is part of Hong Kong people’s identities. / Most Hong Kong people, in fact, would avoid the idea of death, not to mention death rituals. When they do, they usually have little knowledge of the Taoist ritual. Most, however, consider the music to be an essential part of the ritual, which reflects to a great extent, their identity. They do, however, consider that the music played represent their identity. / During the fieldwork for this thesis, I identified a number of traditional Cantonese music pieces in the ritual. For example, the Cantonese tune “Yi-ding jin“一錠金has been playing a significant role. Ordinary Chinese people, as a matter of fact, accept that the music in Taoist funeral rituals represent their identity. / I have come to understand that there are many layers in a Taoist funeral. The musicians, the ritual, and the Taoist philosophy are part and parcel of the funeral other than the music. Through extensive fieldwork and interviews, I attempt to draw a clear picture of Taoist funeral music activities in the Hong Kong community and explore the entwined relationship between politics and identity dynamics within Hong Kong Taoist funeral music. For a long time, perhaps even today, the identity of the Hong Kong people has remained a controversial issue, given that Hong Kong was a British colony before the return of its sovereignty to China. My research, however, shows that the Hong Kong people are keen to adopt a death ritual that demonstrates their Chinese identity. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Chan, Chi Chun. / Thesis (M.Phil.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 101-108). / Abstracts also in Chinese. / Acknowledgements --- p.v / Table of Contents --- p.ix / List of Figures --- p.x / Romanization and Translation --- p.xi / A Note on Photography --- p.xii / Chapter Chapter 1 --- : Introduction / Introduction and Background --- p.1 / Literature Review --- p.5 / Methodology and Approaches --- p.8 / Organization of the thesis --- p.13 / Chapter Chapter 2 --- : Funeral Music in Hong Kong / An Introduction to Funeral Parlours in Hong Kong --- p.15 / The Quanzhen School and the Zhengyi School in Hong Kong Funeral Parlours --- p.26 / Funeral Music in Hong Kong Society --- p.30 / Chapter Chapter 3 --- : Musical Practice of the Zhengyi School / Introduction --- p.38 / Musical Instruments in the Zhengyi school --- p.38 / Transmission --- p.49 / Changes?
