敦煌寫經書法研究. / Study of the calligraphy of Buddhist and Daoist scriptures of Dunhuang / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Digital dissertation consortium / Dunhuang xie jing shu fa yan jiu.

January 2007 (has links)
There are five chapters. Chapter 1 reviews the publishing of catalogs, the methods used to identify fake copies, and previous scholarly studies. I will also define the research scope, objective and methodology of the study. Chapters 2 to 4 explain the relationships between official sutra copies and Buddhist ones, religion and scripture calligraphy, and the copyists and their calligraphy. Through analysing the colophons at the end of the manuscripts and the style of the calligraphy, I intend to show the impact of politics, religion and the status of the copyists on the calligraphy. Chapter 5 focuses on the artistic style of the calligraphy of Dunhuang scriptures, explores the concepts of Xiejing Style and Beiliang Style , and highlights the stylistic differences and similarities in different geographical areas. / This study demonstrates that Dunhuang scriptures are an important part in the history of Chinese calligraphy. The quality of the calligraphy varies: some may be masterpieces while others common everyday writings. / This thesis investigates the calligraphy of Buddhist and Daoist scriptures found in Dunhuang and Xinjiang, spanning from the Jin dynasty to the Song dynasty. The calligraphy of the copied scriptures is analyzed in its specific social and historical context. Based on historical records, contemporary references and the actual objects themselves, this study uses a textual, comparative research method to give an overview of the calligraphy and to describe its course of development in an approach that is as faithful to history as possible. / 毛秋瑾. / 呈交日期: 2005年12月. / 論文(哲學博士)--香港中文大學, 2006. / 參考文獻(p. 143-149). / Cheng jiao ri qi: 2005 nian 12 yue. / Advisers: Jao Tsung-i; Harold Mok Kar-leung. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-11, Section: A, page: 4016. / Electronic reproduction. "The Harbour of Incense" : An Original Composition in Three Movements

Tse, Nok Kiu 08 1900 (has links)
This paper presents an overview of the concepts and strategies in the original composition, The Harbour of Incense, a cycle of three movements for different groups of instruments. Each movement addresses an aspect of the musical cultures of Hong Kong. The first movement Taan Go for Harp Solo explores the sound world of the folk genre saltwater song; the second movement Jat1 Wun2 Sai3 Ngau4 Naam5 Min6 for Flute and Piano highlights the musicality of Cantonese language; the third movement Daa Zaai for Oboe, Clarinet in B-flat, Bassoon, and Percussion, is inspired by the keyi music used in the Taoist funeral. The paper discusses how to bring together Southeast Asian aesthetics and contemporary Western compositional techniques, as well as how to communicate this unique cultural experience to performers and audiences from other backgrounds. It provides the transcriptions of two saltwater songs and an excerpt of keyi music, and illustrate how they inform the structures, textures, and melodic gestures of the composition. The nine tones of Cantonese language are also explored for generating melodic materials, metric plans, and articulation writing.

仇英仙境圖研究. / Study of the the immortal landscape paintings by Qiu Ying / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Qiu Ying xian jing tu yan jiu.

January 2012 (has links)
This thesis attempts to study the immortal landscape paintings from the sixteenth to seventeenth century as well as the ideas on the realm of immortals embodied in these paintings. Focusing on the immortal landscape paintings attributed to Qiu Ying, this thesis analyses their themes and allusive meanings, and thus presents the diversity in the diverse approaches adopted in the immortal landscape paintings in the late Ming period. / Since a majority of the immortal landscape paintings survived today is attributed to Qiu Ying, his works can be seen as the encapsulation of the artistic creations on the theme of the realm of immortals dated in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. A representative professional painter of the time, Qiu Ying probably produced his works for a certain group of intended audience in accordance with a variety of ideas and needs. With this presupposition this thesis regards Qiu Ying’s works and the imitations of such as the products responding the demands of the art market in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Through an analysis of the subject matter and composition of the paintings, this thesis reveals the sentimental values held by the immortal landscape paintings for their possessors. / Depicting the dwellings of deities, immortal landscape paintings can be identified as a sub-genre of landscape paintings and are hardly distinct from other landscape paintings. The immortal landscape paintings by Qiu Ying can be classified into five types in terms of visual elements, including: I) particular deities; II) Taoist adepts practicing alchemy; III) historical figures awaiting respectfully for ascending to celestial realms; IV) Peach Blossom Spring, the Chinese equivalent of utopia; and V) scenes imbued with literati spirit. / Of these five types of immortal landscape paintings, examples from three are selected to demonstrate their different functionalities in Ming society; immortal landscape paintings portraying particular deities were created for festive occasions, while those depicting Taoist alchemy and literati figures offered reassurance on the quest for immortality and implied reclusive spirit respectively. Through a detailed investigation this thesis illustrates that immortal landscape paintings were produced to serve a variety of functions, to convey different messages, and to accommodate various needs in Ming society, thus testifying the close association between paintings, objects of utility and the occasions they are created for. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / 楊晉宜. / "2012年8月". / "2012 nian 8 yue". / Thesis (M.Phil.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 105-122). / Electronic reproduction. The world of rituals : masters of ceremonies (Lisheng), ancestral cults, community compacts, and local temples in late imperial Sibao, Fujian

Liu, Yonghua, 1970- January 2003 (has links)
From the establishment of the Ming to the fall of the Qing (1368--1911), the social and cultural scene of the Chinese countryside was greatly transformed. Lineages became the dominant social organization in many areas. Local temples became a familiar part of the rural landscape. Local culture was increasingly exposed to the influence of regional culture and gentry culture with the proliferation of market towns, the development of the printing industry and the rise of literacy. By investigating the history of ritual specialists and their rituals in a sub-county area in southeast China, this thesis shows how these social and cultural transformations took place and how the local population experienced them. Lisheng or masters of ceremonies, the focus of this thesis, played and still play an important role in the local social and symbolic life. Either along with or in the absence of other ritual specialists, they guided the laity through ritual procedures to communicate with ancestors, gods, and the dead. These rituals, and also the related liturgical texts, were the outcome of social and cultural transformations in the late imperial period. Through a detailed discussion of the history of the three important local institutions that were closely related to lisheng and their rituals, namely, lineages, community compacts, and temple networks, the thesis shows the limitations of the elitist interpretation of late imperial cultural transformations. Cultural integration and gentrification were without doubt important aspects of these processes. However, both may have oversimplified the complexity of the processes and exaggerate the influence of high culture. Cultural hybridization, the process in which elements from different cultural traditions were synthesized into a new, constantly changing cultural mosaic, provides a multipolar, interactional, and thus more complex approach to our understanding of cultural processes in late imperial China.
