The Affect of Intrinsic Motivation and Personality on Teamwork Quality

Abstract The importance of teamwork is highlighted nowadays in business management. To smooth the operation and strengthen the competitiveness of an organization, recruiting professionals from diversified fields to build cross-functional teams is extremely needed. Nevertheless, individuals may have diverse personality, hold different attitude to their work or are driven by different incentives, including extrinsic or intrinsic motivation. Based on the research of Hoegl & Gemuenden in 2001, this study take teamwork quality as the feature of teamwork performance and discuss how team member¡¦s personality and intrinsic motivation affect the result of teamwork quality. This subjects were consisted of groups of students from 11 colleges who took the nationwide course ¡§The Discovery and Application of Creativity¡¨launched by the Consulting Division in Ministry of Education. We collected the questionnaire spread from these students after course and analyze the data with statistical methods of descriptive statistics, factor analysis, reliability analysis, ANOVA, t test, multiple regression. The major results of this study are as following: 1. Intrinsic motivation has significant positive influence on teamwork quality. 2. Personality partly influences teamwork quality.

Effect of Software Project Team Quality on Project Performance

In a rapidly changing business environment, it is difficult for enterprises to achieve their objectives by functional structures only. When organizational tasks become more complex, ¡§team¡¨ plays an important role on overcoming these challenges and helps achieving team performance. As a result, researches on team effectiveness have becoming ever more important today. The purpose of this study includes below: 1.Users should be involved because they possess knowledge which developers don¡¦t have but is required for system development. They should be viewed as partners with the developers that could make team to get target. 2.The most critical resource for knowledge teams is expertise, or specialized skills and knowledge, but the mere presence of expertise on a team is insufficient to produce high-quality work. Expertise must be managed and coordinated in order to leverage its potential. That is, teams must be able to manage their skill and knowledge interdependencies effectively through user and developer¡¦s good relationship. 3.The six facets of the Teamwork Quality (TWQ) construct, i.e., communication, coordination, balance of member contributions, mutual support, effort, and cohesion, are specified. TWQ shows a strong association with team members' personal success.

The influence of TeamWork Quality and Team Playfulness to Team innovation

It is known that imagination causes creation. However, in an enterprise, creation may be achieved by the communication and sharing opinions among the members of the team. Working in the complicated working environment, it is the team rather than the individual that plays a vital role in the generation of the innovation. There is a lack in the academic area of the investigation the team work containing the process of the interaction within the group. Until 2001, Hoegl and Gemuenden brought a new concept called TeamWork Qauility (TWQ), which emphasizes that the quality of the interaction in the group determines whether the creation will succeed or not. Moreover, since the organizational innovative climate largely affects the team¡¦s innovation performance, playfulness in the working place is gradually being noticed. The research applied from Yu , Ping and Wu, Ji-Jing (2003) defines team playfulness climate as a kind of internal working environment which is formed by personal interaction and relation. With this open and joyful atmosphere, people can feel safe and joyful to explore anything related to their work. With this playful climate, people can be inspired and satisfied and bring more contribution to innovation performance. The subjects were consisted of groups of students from 19 colleges who took the course ¡§The Discovery and Application of Creativity¡¨ and joined the Creative Program Competition which was held by the Consulting Division in Ministry of Education. The evidence of this research is based on the questionnaires given out to these students. In this research, we have 688 valid questionnaires from 99 teams. The rate of the effective achievement is 69.30%. The reliability of TWQ and organizational playfulness climate are respectively 0.95 and 0.92. The data was analyzed by statistical methods of descriptive statistics, factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis and structural equation model. The major results of this study are as following: 1. Team playfulness climate partly influences team innovation performance. 2. TWQ has significant positive influence on team playfulness climate. 3. Team playfulness climate mediates the relationship between TQW and team innovation performance.

A Mixed Methods Study of Leader-Follower Dynamics in Student Project Teams: Toward Advancing Career Readiness

The challenges we face in society are becoming increasingly complex. Addressing complex problems (such as climate change, food security, and water conservation, among others) requires working with others in an interdependent and collaborative environment. However, employers have noted that college graduates are insufficiently prepared to work effectively in teams. The central problem this study seeks to solve pertains to the inability of college graduates to engage effectively in teamwork. I have identified transformational leadership and effective followership behaviors as predictors of teamwork quality and team effectiveness in the study. This study applies an explanatory sequential mixed methods design to examine: (a) whether transformational team leadership is positively related to team effectiveness, as mediated by teamwork quality, (b) whether effective team followership is positively related to team effectiveness, as mediated by teamwork quality; (c) team members' perceptions of overall teamwork quality, (d) team members' perceptions of how transformational team leadership influences overall teamwork quality and team effectiveness, (e) team members' perceptions of how effective team followership influences overall teamwork quality and team effectiveness, and (f) the differences and similarities that exist between teams in the perceptions of teamwork quality, transformational team leadership and effective team followership. Quantitative data were collected through surveys that were completed by 98 students (n=98) subdivided into 20 project teams (j=20) in the Virginia Governor School for Agriculture, as well as 84 students (n=84) subdivided into 10 project teams (j=10) in a leadership class at the University of Georgia. Follow-up focus groups were conducted with five teams (j = 5, n = 27). Statistical analyses included: descriptive statistics, correlational tests, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), Cronbach's alpha tests, and a mediation analysis based on ordinary least square regression-based path analysis. Coding and thematic analysis of focus group transcripts were carried out in the qualitative phase. Findings indicate that transformational team leadership was positively related to team effectiveness ( = 0.54, p < .05), such that the relationship was mediated by teamwork quality. However, teamwork quality did not mediate the relationship between effective team followership and team effectiveness. Findings show a distinction in the perception of teamwork quality between teams. Those with low-quality teamwork started out with limited social cohesion, exhibited social loafing, and were polarized along in-group versus out-group lines. In contrast, groups with high-quality teamwork started out with team bonding, resolved minor conflicts quickly, and established team synergy. Similarly, findings show a distinction in the perception of team leadership between teams, where those with low-quality teamwork exhibited centralized leadership, while teams with high-quality teamwork exhibited shared leadership. Lastly, findings show a distinction in the perception of team followership between teams, where those with low-quality teamwork exhibited passive team followership, and those with high-quality teamwork exhibited proactive team followership. The study has important implications for college students, leadership educators, organizations, and researchers. / Doctor of Philosophy / In today's world, employers are interested in the ability of college graduates to work effectively in a team. This is because the problems organizations face today are increasingly complex and require teamwork. Unfortunately, employers have rated many college graduates as inadequately prepared to work effectively in teams. Seeing this problem, I wanted to know what factors influence college graduates' ability to engage effectively in teamwork. While leadership researchers have identified team members' leadership and followership behaviors as factors that influence their ability to work effectively in a team, there is a need to know what that relationship looks like. Therefore, in this study, I have explored how transformational leadership and effective followership behaviors of team members influence teamwork quality and team effectiveness. I surveyed 20 student project teams comprised of 98 students in the Virginia Governor School for Agriculture, as well as 10 student project teams comprised of 84 students in a leadership class at the University of Georgia. As a follow-up, I conducted small-group discussions with five teams to understand what was going on in their teams regarding teamwork quality, leadership, and followership. I found that transformational team leadership influenced team effectiveness by improving the quality of teamwork in a team. However, effective team followership did not improve the quality of teamwork in a team. I also found a distinction in the perception of teamwork quality between teams. Those with low-quality teamwork started out with limited social cohesion, exhibited social loafing, and were polarized along in-group versus out-group lines. Les modalités de mobilisation d'une compétence improvisationnelle au sein d'une équipe projet / Detailed rules for the mobilization of improvisational competences within a project team

De nombreux projets échouent du fait d’une gestion insuffisante des imprévus. Compte tenu de l’intérêt croissant que suscite ce sujet tant auprès des managers de projet que dans le monde de la recherche, notre objectif est de rechercher des solutions innovantes pour appréhender ces imprévus. Nous mobilisons les travaux sur la gestion de projet, sur l’improvisation organisationnelle et sur la qualité du travail en équipe, et nous posons la question de recherche suivante : quels sont les dispositifs managériaux à développer dans le cadre d’équipe projet pour gérer efficacement la capacité à improviser lors de projets innovants ? Cette question de départ se décline en deux sous-questions de recherche : Quelles sont les situations de management de projet favorisant une improvisation et quelle est leur évolution durant la vie d’un projet ? Quel est l’impact de la mobilisation des dispositifs improvisationnels par les membres d’équipes projet sur la performance du projet ? Pour répondre à ces questions, nous nous appuyons sur l’analyse quantitative d’une base de données internationale relative aux situations managériales de projet, pour répondre à la première question de recherche, et sur une enquête auprès d’équipe projet d’étudiants réalisant des projets tutorés, en réponse à la seconde question de recherche. Parmi les principaux résultats, cette thèse permet d’identifier et de caractériser les « situations improvisationnelles » dans le cadre d’équipe projet, mais aussi d’analyser comment elles évoluent en fonction des phases du projet. Elle se penche également sur le lien entre l’improvisation collective et la performance des équipes projet, et montre que la qualité du travail en équipe joue un rôle intermédiaire. Enfin, le rôle joué par plusieurs dispositifs managériaux est mis en évidence. En fonction du type de performance, économique ou sociale, deux modèles de gestion de l’improvisation dans les équipes projet sont proposés. Ces résultats font l’objet d’une discussion, puis les apports de notre recherche ainsi que ses limites et les perspectives de recherches sont développées en conclusion. / Many projects fail because of poor management of unpredictable situations. Given the growing interest in this subject among both project managers and researchers, our goal is to seek innovative solutions to capture the unexpected. The literature review is grounded on project management, and the concepts of organizational improvisation and quality teamwork. We ask the following research question : what are the managerial devices to develop within project teams in order to manage effectively the ability to improvise in innovative projects ? The initial question is divided into two sub-research questions : What are the project managament situations favoring improvisation and how do they evolve during the project life span ? What is the impact of the mobilization of improvidational devices by the project team members on project performance ? To answer these questions, we rely on quantitative analysis of an international database on managerial project situations to answer on the first research question, and on a survey of project teams of students achieving tutored projects, in response to the second research question. Among the main results, this thesis identifies and characterizes « improvisational situations » within project teams. It also analyzes how they evolve during the project life span. It also examines the relationship between collective improvisation and performance in project teams, and it shows that the teamwork quality plays an intermediary role. Finally, the role played by several managerial devices is highlighted. Depending on the type of performance, economic or social, two management models of improvisation in project trams are available. These results are discussed and the contributions of our research as well as its limitations and the perspectives of research are developed in conclusion.

Its use refers to increased efficiency, improvements in products and services, and also the technological strategy of organizations. They are technically complex, do not have physical limitations and are intangible, nevertheless they are very ambitious and surrounded by uncertainties. Software projects teams must deal with a large amount of information, in addition to making intensive use of knowledge of several areas simultaneously, and also must be skilled in communicating and coordinating their actions. In this dissertation, a quantitative approach research using Structural Equation Modeling with Partial Least Squares (PLS-SEM) was carried out to evaluate the relationship between Teamwork quality and software projects success. The Teamwork quality is a construct that allows measuring the internal collaboration of the team within six dimensions: mutual support, contribution balancing, cohesion, communication, coordination and effort. Software projects success is a widely studied construct in the scientific literature, and in this dissertation was considered as composed of efficiency, impact on the consumer and impact on the team. The result obtained showed that the Teamwork quality exerts considerable influence on the software projects success, corroborating the results of previous academic research, and generating the knowledge that the collaboration should be fostered by the organizations in software development teams. In addition, as a contribution to practice, a model was proposed to evaluate the software project teams teamwork quality, aiming to increase the internal collaboration of the project team and, consequently, the success of the software project. / Projetos de software são cada vez mais expoentes no atual ambiente organizacional. Seu uso remete ao aumento da eficiência, melhorias em produtos e serviços, e também a estratégia tecnológica das organizações. São tecnicamente complexos, sem limitações físicas e intangíveis, não obstante são muito ambiciosos e cercados de incertezas. Assim, as equipes de projetos de software devem lidar com uma grande quantidade de informações, além de fazerem uso intensivo do conhecimento de várias áreas simultaneamente, e por isso devem ser hábeis na comunicação e coordenação de suas ações. Nesta dissertação foi realizada uma pesquisa com abordagem quantitativa utilizando Modelagem de Equações Estruturais com Mínimos Quadrados Parciais (PLS-SEM) para testar a relação da Qualidade do trabalho em equipe com o Sucesso dos projetos de software. A Qualidade do trabalho em equipe é um construto que permite mensurar a colaboração interna da equipe a partir de seis dimensões: apoio mútuo, balanceamento de contribuições, coesão, comunicação, coordenação e esforço. O Sucesso em projetos de software é um construto amplamente estudado na literatura científica, e nesta dissertação foram consideradas as dimensões: eficiência, impacto no consumidor e impacto na equipe do projeto. O resultado obtido mostrou que a Qualidade do trabalho em equipe exerce influência considerável no Sucesso dos projetos de software, corroborando os resultados de pesquisas acadêmicas anteriores, e gerando o conhecimento de que a colaboração deve ser fomentada pelas organizações nas equipes de desenvolvimento de software. Adicionalmente foi proposto, como contribuição para prática, um modelo para avaliação da Qualidade do trabalho em equipe para equipes de Projetos de software, visando o aumento da colaboração interna da equipe do projeto e, consequentemente do Sucesso dos projetos de software.
