Certain factors should be taken into consideration when an information service wishes to provide information to the community. An important matter is whether the institution is able to provide certain services as far as the collection, facilities and personnel are concerned. A question that should also be asked, is whether this should be a fee-based service, or a free service. Another important matter is the marketing of services, which in earlier times did not form part of a non-profit organization, but is nowadays regarded as part of normal management practice. There should also exist a good understanding and a partnership between the information service and the user in the community, and in this way co operation between both parties should be established. In order to provide a pro-active information service, it is important to have knowledge of the information needs of the manager in industry and commerce. / Information Science / M.Bibl. The role of technikons with regard to social and economic upliftment of communities, with reference to the Eastern Cape TechnikonMoodly, Adele Leah 08 1900 (has links)
Technikons were established in order to meet the need for skilled
labour in the field of Engineering and Technology. Yet, within
the Transkei it is found that there is a greater need for
literacy training as a means of contributing to social and
economic upliftment as technological advancement cannot take
place within an illiterate society.
As the Eastern Cape Technikon is based within the Transkei, a
challenge is put to this institution to meet the needs of its
surrounding community. Thus besides providing technologically
-orientated education, the question is put as to how the
Technikon could address illiteracy in the area.
A study of countries which have addressed these issues is made
and an investigation into the problem within the area is carried
out. Based on conclusions drawn from these, recommendations are
made.
These do not necessarily pertain to all technikons but can be
considered when approaching the issue of literacy/illiteracy . / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Comparative Education)

The impact of staff development interventions on teaching and learning at a South African TechnikonHarvey, Irene J. Sass 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Curriculum Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / The focus of this research, PIL 72 (Building institutional capacity through staff development) was active at the Eastern Cape Technikon (ECT), a tertiary institution of higher learning in the Eastern Province, South Africa from 1999 to 2001. The project addressed curriculum and staff development with the ultimate aim of improving institutional capacity. This was done through a series of training sessions for a group of 22 participants over eighteen months in Outcomes Based Education (OBE).
This research investigated the impact of PIL 72 on the teaching and learning practices at the ECT. Literature was reviewed on aspects of staff development, curriculum development, assessment reform, instructional improvement and project evaluation. Qualitative research was conducted with stakeholders at the institution. Data was gathered through interviews, questionnaires and document analysis.
The major findings indicated that the benefit for participants resulting from participation in the TELP project was mainly personal; the project was to some extent successful in equipping participants with the required knowledge but not the wide academic corps; the format of the staff development activities was adequate but lacked sufficient monitoring and feedback mechanisms; developmental academic leadership, especially at Head of Department level, was absent at the institution and that institutional culture both influenced and hampered institutional learning.
Recommendations for implementation and possible further research are made. The research revealed that institutional culture plays a crucial role in the degree to which institutional learning takes place. Further research in this regard is recommended at institutions with similar organizational characteristics as Eastern Cape Technikon, to explore the extent to which institutional culture influences institutional learning as well as alternative staff delivery modes that can be used at institutions of higher learning.

Mangosuthu Technikon Resource Centre and its involvement in the Umlazi community with particular reference to high schools : 1991-1997.Msimango, Highness Lucy. January 1998 (has links)
Academic libraries are concerned about being involved in the communities in which
they exist by rendering library and information services. In order to maintain effective
community involvement, academic libraries find it is important to find ways in which
they can serve the community. The study investigated the Mangosuthu Technikon
Resource Centre's (MTRC) involvement in the community. The intention was to
determine the extent of usage of the MTRC services by Umlazi high school teachers
and to identify problems which these teachers experienced with regard to the MTRC
services. Umlazi high school teachers as users of the MTRC services and MTRC staff as
providers of the services, were the two groups chosen for the study. Two
questionnaires, one for external respondents, the Umlazi high school teachers, and
another for the internal respondents, MTRC staff: were hand delivered to and
collected from the respondents. The results of the survey indicated a very low
percentage of usage of the MTRC services by Umlazi high school teachers and a
high percentage of interest in and lack of knowledge of the MTRC services by
Umlazi high school teachers. There was agreement of opinions between Umlazi high
school teachers and MTRC staff on the reasons for non-use of the MTRC services
by Umlazi high school teachers. Reasons indicated were that teachers did not know
they could use the MTRC. There was a lack of promotional brochures and
newsletters, and teachers obtained what they needed elsewhere.
It was recommended that MTRC staff be educated on the MTRC's responsibility
to community involvement; that the MTRC provide library user education to Umlazi
high school teachers; that the MTRC base its services on community needs
assessment; that marketing practices be injected into the MTRC services; that
consultation with the community during planning stages of community services be
maintained; that MTRC provide the community only with services not provided
elsewhere; and that the MTRC take initiative in establishing a multitype area network
with Umlazi Public Library and Umlazi high schools. / Thesis (M.I.S.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1998.

Sensemaking in turbulence : an analysis of the merger of the Central University of Technology from a sensemaking perspectiveMarumo, Khomotso Moetanalo Hilda 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study takes as starting point the observation in sensemaking theory that autonomic
arousal is accompanied by a loss of existing frames and cues and the consequential cognitive
implosion. Situations such as these are marked by a crisis in identity construction and the
resultant loss of sense being made. The aim of the study was to find out to what extent this
phenomenon is at play during a merger between two organizations. Specifically to what extent
this phenomenon did manifest itself among the employees of the Central University of
Technology in Welkom after the merger of the former Welkom Campus of Vista University
and the Technikon Free State.
The study starts with an overview of the literature on corporate mergers; focusing on research
on effects with regards to (i) how the different gender groups of employees were affected by
these interruptions, (ii) how employees with diverse levels of experience were affected, (iii) to
what extent the qualifications of employees was a factor regarding the impact of this
autonomic arousal and (iv) whether race was a factor in determining the extent of autonomic
arousal.
The above is followed by an explanation of the sensemaking perspective and the nature of and
moment for autonomic arousal. It is argued that organizational mergers represent an
interruption in the ongoing flow of sensemaking that could lead to autonomic arousal.
Using sensemaking theory and autonomic arousal as a theoretical starting point, interviews
were conducted with key figures in the specific merger between the Vista University Welkom
Campus and the Technikon Free State. The respondents were selected using the snowballing
sampling technique. The idea behind the interviews was to demonstrate how staff members
were emotionally affected by the interruption of the merger and how it had an impact on their
perceptions about their work.
It was found that the flow of experience was interrupted and as cues and frames were reduced,
the employees focussed more on personal issues.

Alternative measurement instruments for the evaluation of learner achievement in business management in the Technikon S AVan Koller, Johan Frans. 11 1900 (has links)
Thesis / This research is mainly concerned with determining whether the existing evaluation
methods/measurement instruments used in Business Management at Technikon SA, are
still suitable, adequate and acceptable enough for continued use, or whether there is a
need for the introduction of alternative methods.
The first objective in this research was to determine what the exact role and function
of evaluation in the education process is. On the basis of literature, it was determined
that evaluation, and by implication measurement, is a crucial component of the
education process and that no real teaching or learning can occur without it.
Second, an attempt was made to determine what the nature and extent of the
shortcomings of the existing measurement instruments were. Also on the basis of
literature it was found that there are numerous and serious disadvantages in the
existing measurement instruments.
Third, the researcher also attempted to determine whether any other (alternative) measurement instruments, in addition to the existing ones, were available. It was
discovered that there are a variety of alternative evaluation/measurement instruments
available.
Fourth, the measurement instruments used in Business Management were analysed and
compared to the Business Management curriculum objectives to determine whether
they were indeed suitable for the subject. It was found that, although a positive
correlation seems to exist between the measurement instruments and the curriculum
objectives, there were certain definite shortcomings in the existing measurement
instruments in terms of the realization of some of the curriculum objectives.
Fifth, focus group interviews were used as a research method to get an understanding
of the views of TSA learners on the aspect of evaluation and the methods/instruments
currently used. Most of the participants expressed a need for more practical types of measurement/evaluation. However, many participants felt the written examination
should not be abolished entirely, but be used in conjunction with other more practical
methods.
The research concluded with a number of recommendations based on the findings in
this research. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / D. Ed. (Didactics)
