METHODOLOGY CASE SELECTION RESULTS ANALYSIS WINTER 2017 Following the revelations of the process tracing and case comparison, it can be summarized that for an apology to happen, the most important factor is a measure of domestic pressure into apologizing: by the government, by local institutions or by the media. How big the crime was, how bit the economic opportunities are seem to be less relevant as long as there is a willingness to apologize. State apologies seem to be having a moment. they have become a tool for politicking that goes beyond the expression of remorse. It has been cited as crucial to the betterment of foreign relations and as a key foreign policy tool. The author is looking to contribute to the understanding of the process of state apologies and contribute to the field of Geopolitics of Peace, a field that Megoran (2013) calls often ignored. Religion als Konfliktquelle ist eines der zentralen Themen des beginnenden 21. Jahrhunderts. In Anbetracht dessen, dass im Zentrum religiöser Kämpfe oft nicht eine andere Religion, sondern das Säkulare steht, ist erstaunlich wie wenig Aufmerksamkeit dem Zusammenleben von Religiösen und Nichtreligiösen bisher geschenkt wird. In stark religiös durchdrungenen Gesellschaften stellen Atheist_innen bzw. Menschen, die nicht religiös sind, häufig eine marginalisierte und teils verfolgte Minderheit dar. Selbst in einer religiös pluralen Gesellschaft wie den USA leiden Atheist_innen oft unter gesellschaftlichem Ausschluss. Der Beitrag wird auf der Basis von qualitativen Interviews und eingebettet in einen Überblick über typische Formen des Umgangs zwischen Atheist_innen und ihrem religiösen Umfeld in den USA die Konfliktlinien zwischen den beiden Gruppen nachzeichnen und dabei besonders auf die Auseinandersetzung um die Wahrheit und die legitimen Quellen des Wissens eingehen. / Religion is the source of many conflicts in the beginning of the 21st century. But given that these conflicts are often not between religions themselves but rather arise from the struggle with the secular, there is surprisingly little research regarding the relationship between religious and nonreligious people. In highly religious societies, atheists and the nonreligious are a marginalized and sometimes persecuted minority. Even in a religiously pluralistic society like that of the United States, atheists often suffer from societal exclusion. Based on qualitative interviews, this article provides an overview of the variety of typical interactions between believers and nonbelievers, and focuses on the lines of conflict that exist between these two groups. Special attention is given to the debate about truth and the legitimate sources of knowledge.
