STRUCTURAL FACTORIZATION OF SQUARES IN STRINGS

A balanced double square in a string x consists of two squares starting in the same position and of comparable lengths. We present a unique fac- torization of the longer square into primitive components refereed to as the canonical factorization and analyze its properties. In particular, we examine the inversion factors and the right and left inversion subfactors. All three substrings are collectively referred to as rare factors as they occur only twice in a signi cant portion of the larger square. The inversion factors were es- sential for determining the classi cation of mutual con gurations of double squares and thus providing the best-to-date upper bound of 11n=6 for the number of distinct squares in a string of length n by Deza, Franek, and Thierry. The right and left inversion subfactors have the advantage of being half the length of the inversion factors, thus providing a stronger dis- crimination property for a possible third square. This part of the thesis was published by Bai, Franek, and Smyth. The canonical factorization and the right and left inversion subfactors are used to formulate and prove a signi cantly stronger version of the New Periodicity Lemma by Fan, Puglisi, Smyth, and Turpin, 2006, that basically restricts what kind of a third square can exists in a balanced double square. This part of the thesis was published by Bai, Franek, and Smyth. The canonical factorization and the inversion factors are applied to for- mulate and prove a stronger version of the Three Squares Lemma by Crochemore and Rytter. Double-Difference Tomography Applied to Monitoring of Geologic Carbon Sequestration in the Aneth Oil Field, Utah

Double-difference seismic tomography is performed on a carbon sequestration operation in the Aneth Oil Field in southeast Utah as part of a Department of Energy initiative on monitoring, verification, and accounting of sequestered CO2. A total of 1,211 seismic events were recorded from a borehole array of 22 geophones. Aneth Unit data were divided into four time periods for time-lapse analysis. A low velocity zone spanning the lateral extents of the observable region, likely representing a CO2 plume, is detected when considering voxels containing the highest ray path coverage. A series of synthetic tomography tests simulating different CO2 plume sizes and locations was performed to assist in characterizing velocity changes associated with Aneth Unit data. Inferences about the existence of a CO2 plume should be made by comparing actual data to synthetic data resulting from simulations performed under similar conditions. Considering synthetic simulation similarities and a derivative weight sum analysis, a CO2 plume can be imaged within the Desert Creek reservoir, but the resolution of the CO2 plume is too low for proper monitoring, verification, and accounting of injected CO2. Recommendations, for improving CO2 plume resolution through double difference seismic tomography, are made to increase the ray path distribution throughout the Aneth Unit by varying geophone locations. / Master of Science

Full-Season and Double-Crop Soybean Response to Potassium Fertilizer

Demand for potassium (K) increases with increasing soybean yield. Little research has been conducted on soybean response to K on coastal plain and piedmont soils of Virginia, especially in double-crop systems. Nineteen full-season and 14 double-crop soybean experiments were conducted in 2013 and 2014 in Virginia and northeastern North Carolina to determine full-season and double-crop soybean (with wheat straw remaining or removed) response to soil test K and K fertilizer application rates. Field moist, air dried, and oven dry soil test K extraction techniques were also compared to predict responsiveness of sites to K applications. Potassium fertilizer increased yield in five of 19 full-season experiments and one of 14 double-crop experiments. Full-season soybean yield plateaued at 88% relative yield and soil test K value of 38.8 mg K kg-1. Full-season plant K critical concentrations were 18.2 g K kg-1 for V5 and 24.6 g K kg-1 for R2. Although critical concentrations could not be determined for double-crop soybean, V5 and R2 concentrations ranged from 17.6 to 35.6 g K kg-1 or 13.2 to 28.1 K kg-1, respectively, most of which were within or above accepted sufficiency levels. Eight of 13 sites resulted in greater soil K concentrations when alternative soil drying methods were compared to air-dry methods. However, differences were not consistent and no single method was superior for these soils. More data is needed for double-crop soybean systems due to lack of response and lack of low soil test K sites in these experiments. / Master of Science

Double checking medicines: defence against error or contributory factor?

RATIONALE AND The double checking of medicines in health care is a contestable procedure. It occupies an obvious position in health care practice and is understood to be an effective defence against medication error but the process is variable and the outcomes have not been exposed to testing. This paper presents an appraisal of the process using data from part of a larger study on the contributory factors in medication errors and their reporting. METHODS: Previous research studies are reviewed; data are analysed from a review of 991 drug error reports and a subsequent series of 40 in-depth interviews with health professionals in an acute hospital in northern England. RESULTS: The incident reports showed that errors occurred despite double checking but that action taken did not appear to investigate the checking process. Most interview participants (34) talked extensively about double checking but believed the process to be inconsistent. Four key categories were apparent: deference to authority, reduction of responsibility, automatic processing and lack of time. Solutions to the problems were also offered, which are discussed with several recommendations. CONCLUSIONS: Double checking medicines should be a selective and systematic procedure informed by key principles and encompassing certain behaviours. Psychological research may be instructive in reducing checking errors but the aviation industry may also have a part to play in increasing error wisdom and reducing risk.

The effects of spin-orbit coupling on gravitational wave uncertainties

Paper discusses the expected uncertainty of orbital parameters of binary stars as measured by the space-based gravitational wave observatory LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) and how the inclusion of spin in the model of the binary stars affects the uncertainty. The uncertainties are found by calculating the received gravitational wave from a binary pair and then performing a linear least-squares parameter estimation. The case of a 1500 solar mass black hole that is 20 years from coalescing with a 1000 solar mass black hole--both of which are 50 x 10^6 light years away--is analyzed, and the results show that the inclusion of spin has a negligible effect upon the angular resolution of LISA but can increase the accuracy in mass and distance measurements by factors of 15 and 65, respectively.

A comparative analysis of the usage of the concept of “beneficial owner” in South African double tax agreements

M.Com. (SA and International Tax) / The term “beneficial owner” is found in 64 of the 71 double tax agreements signed by South Africa. However, there is no definition of the term in the Income Tax Act or within the orbit of international taxation. There are international court cases in relation to the interpretation of the term. The fact that there are inconsistencies in the treaties signed by South Africa may result in treaty shopping opportunities. The study aims to define the term “beneficial owner”; to view other necessary acts and other forms of supporting legislature when interpreting a treaty; and subsequently, to explore the term as used in South African double tax agreements.
